Tom's PM

That is really quick amazing. To me, like many people of Newgrounds, Tom is a celebrity. Its hard to imagine he'd find time to answer PMs. Then again, Luis is in a similar category and he posts in here. I still wish I could show him my tattoo, if I only had pictures, simply because he asked.

RE: Tom PM

your kinda blowing this out to more then it really is. He loves this site and he cares for everyone in it. Sounds kinda corny, but its true. I PM'd him about some stupid argument i had on the boards, and i got a message back. Its really no big deal.

anyway, it is nice to see him responding, but its not something we should celebrate.

Dude! That's not cool :P

funny though
Masterswordman. toast.

Toast goes missing all the time. Usually for exactly 60 days. Quite mysterious, that...

I miss all the bitch fights between him and NC most of all. And Ingy and Liam getting involved occasionally... It was good to be online back then. fwe was alright too - sort of like a less emo version of NC.

I remember Gunter's awesome sig most of all.

Has anyone mentioned Ranty? I still remember that thread about him being a hot Swedish girl which ended up with him as a cat ^.^ That and the update of Toast's hillarious variables tutorial :P

Re: Mochibot

I was just about to post the same thing :(. Maybe the sites down, they haven't posted a news in a while.

Re : People Leaving

I miss the days when i signed up, with Denvish, Inglor and Liaaam posting :(. And now other people have "left" for a while, it seems abit empty.

I don't think it is because of the actual forums, but people have jobs, and lives to attend to, they can't spend so much time on the BBS. Shame though :(.

liaaam hasn't made a single post in about a year now :(.

RE: What version of flash?

What version of flash do you use?

For me, I have used Flash 5, MX, MX 2004, 8, and 9 alpha. I currently am using Flash 8 on mac (9 alpha is not on intel macs) and 9 alpha on my bootcamp windows. Yes, I'm on bootcamp windows now.

RE: People Leaving

No, it has a lot to do with the quality and fun of the BBS.

For example, I used to get quite a bit of enjoyment out of posting on and reading the BBS in the little bit of free time that I had. It was a way for me to relax and just "hang out" with the guys. Now, I'd rather suppliment that time with getting something done, because the enjoyment I get from accomplishing something is more than I get from posting.

It wasn't always that way though. It was a nice way to just relax and help some people. I would rather post than vacuum my carpet.

Now, I would rather vacuum my carpet.

If you take the enjoyment out of something, it becomes less fufilling and eventually, you forget about it altogether.

RE: Cybex is home

Don't quit, your one of the most knowledge able regs around, and some of your games are great and very addictive. Don't let some wannabe flash artists push you down, they are only trying to make all good people quit so they can make flash without criticism.

Trust me, i, and a lot of others have been helped and have learned a lot from you.If you stop making flash, we would be loosing one of the nicest, best and greatest flash artists on the forums. Please rethink it :).

Regs Leaving

I guess all I can say at this point is that if people are leaving, they are always welcome back to visit every once in a while :). We'll miss you, and we want you to stay, but if you ever want to make a quick post or two, we won' t give you a hard time.

Regs will always leave. It's part of the Flash Forum, and people like Luis and Neg have seen at least 3 generations of regs come and go. But I think we should stop sulking at this point. We love 'em, they'll still be online on AIM, and they're still hot.

AB, marry me.

And we should talk about this.

Ads before submissions... stuff like that. It all seems a little mechanical and cynical, to be honest.

What I always liked about Newgrounds is the genuine and organic feel to the submissions, and the way that rewards for good submissions were more a matter of friendly competativeness than genuine need to make money. The genuine enthusiasm that Tom has for Flash and stuff... I dunno; it just seems like if money were offered directly then this site would lose its atmosphere of a free ground for creativity where anyone can participate, and instead just become depressingly serious business.

Don't get me wrong; I'm all in favour of cash rewards for animators and coders, but having them out in the open as a big part of the site feels like it would just cheapen the creativity of lots of people here.

YT Cash

Oh, don't get me wrong. I was never one for "Flash for Cash", and I wasn't even getting sponsored for about my first three years. I am not proposing it would work, I was just seeing what you guys thought.

I can agree and disagree with some of your points. I agree the organic "we'll submit flash because it's fun" feel of Newgrounds is wonderful. I also agree with the idea that the Monthly awards and holiday-themed awards that Newgrounds give out are a nice incentive for doing well in the community.

Money is incentive enough for some developers to carry on. Just makes you wonder how many developers would have stopped earlier if it wasn't for sponsorship.

Well, I always saw sponsorship as 'getting paid for what you were doing anyway'; a reward for hard work rather than an incentive for it. At the very most, for someone in my position, sponsorship may mean not having to spend as much time doing real work .'. more time to work on Flash, but making Flash for the sake of money is just a bad idea, IMO.

I mean, you can't force creativity for money. The idea of earning for it may help, sure, but at the end of the day you have to be doing it because you want to be doing it.

Cash for flash

I saw a pretty nifty idea that one site that was hosting my game used. While the game was loading there were adverts. When the adverts went the flash was loaded and you could play straight away.

Yeah mochiland has this ad thing, it has a bar for how long the ad stays there and when its done goes to the game, game may still be loading if its a really big game. I think theres a link to it here www.mochiland.com I get too confused with all their sites...

ads for games
i think its http://www.mochiads.com/
it looks ok but to be honest i dont like it when people sell out, sometimes small sites are better because they have very few ads. I hate it when you load a page and there is so much clutter from adverts.
My site has a few ads so i suppose you could accuse me of doing what i hate myself.
Line rider is a good example, the whole page is just adverts with a game in the middle visual clutter
</ completely different type of ad discussion>

RE: Ads sellout
Indeed thats true, I have that problem to, I could get a game of mine sponsored but I would feel like I'm selling myself out, like I'm saying go to this site not mine because they have more stuff! But then I think about getting a real site going and how if I do the ads right I could just pay for the site keepup and not turn a profit... but then profit is nice. I don't mind sites with the google ads banner on the top, but ads that are animated and force you to interact piss me off! And then placing an add in your game directly seems like a really big sellout.

Whoa its me!

People just leave a lot. Usually to go to college or get a real life (lol). But a lot of the time its because they just get bored. The Flash Forum is pretty dull at the moment. These aren't our golden years.

I left this place cause i don't like to be told what i can talk about or what i can't, when i clearly didn't spam the place or made any other form of offenses. Plus, all my posts got deleted at some point without any good reason, so that didn't really create an atmosphere that makes me want to post anymore.
I guess that some people are just good moderators who live by the described NG rules and some just like the 'power' of being a mod (however pathetic that may be) and make up their own ones for egoistical motives. The way i saw the ng flash community as a cool laid back community sharing their opinions on about everything turned into a place of big egos who like to be worshipped by kids learning the program.
And afterall, like Johnny said, in the end it really is a positive thing, since you can make time for more important stuff. I'm actually animating again without compromising on social life or whatever. The cool people are either on my msn or aim so i don't really miss this place much
