You need a Mac OS to use the Apple development kit and you need a Mac computer in order to get approved for the 70-30 deal depicted in that pie chart. Running a parallel doesn't cut it.

Are you sure? I honestly don't know much about it or developing apps in general but I remember reading somewhere it's possible to develop both on Mac and Windows.
Either way, Android user here.

I think it all depends how you're building your app. XCode is only available for Mac, as the iPhone exporter for Unity. You can export to iOS from CS5 on Windows, but it seems pretty shit.

I know you can develop on any OSX, but if you want to test it on the actual device and publish it to the app store, you need to verify that the OS is installed on a Mac registered to the developer. I could be wrong though.

How do Android's app sales stack up against Apple's? I honestly don't know. I've considered the Android platform, but I just assumed that since Android users are both fewer and of a slightly different demographic (aside from the new tablets, android mobile devices are all phones, as opposed to the iPod Touch which many 10yo+ kids are given as gifts for the sole purpose of playing games), that Apple would be the more lucrative business model.

Android isn't number 1, but it's bigger than iOS.
Android will continue to dominate low and mid priced phones. It'll grow much faster than iOS so sooner than not, there will be more apps and more app downloads.

Galaxy S rocks. not sure about the Galaxy S 2. We do need some more better apps on the market, ones that have originated and not been ported from iOS.
HAI GUYS!!!

Nice find! Although, I still think that the number of users isn't as important as those users' interest in paid apps.
Apple Commands 83% Of Global App Market Sales
Probably wouldn't hurt to develop on both though.

You only need a Mac for the final step of submitting it for approval, you can develop on either Windows or Mac and you can test it on your device without a Mac.
I have a few apps done and on my device already and I don't count on buying a Mac, I'll just borrow one from someone when I need to submit it.
And if you don't want to get the 99$ license, you can sync the unsigned app if your device is jailbroken.
I am by no means pretending that there aren't ways around all the "regulations." I'm just making the assumption that most developers would chose to follow them, for both convenience and security reasons.

I just gave FDT a try. I didn't spend a ton of time with it because my trial ran out. It's pretty neat. It has some annoying quirks that frustrate me though. The worst one to me is that there is no code suggestion for MXML tags. Also it's very pricey. Infact in order to get refactoring you have to pay an extra 500$ fee. Yeah.. Just for refactoring. Something that comes included natively with FB4.
It does have some cool features. The best of them probably being how it auto imports and can auto create variables for you if you refer to them and they don't exist. It also shows you errors in real-time so you don't have to save every time you want to see how bad you've messed up. One stupid thing that I really liked was that it shows you the color of a hex color (0xFFFFFF) in the code.
I like it though. I might actually use it if it wasn't so expensive. Anyways I just thought I'd post my experience with it up here incase anyone was thinking about giving it a try.
Finally took the jump and started learning C++. Even after a simple "Hello World!" I already love it.

Is it because of all the lazy programmers you always get paired with?
Burrrrrn

C++ developed in the 1980s, 14 year old is telling another 14 year old he's "late to the party".
What's going on :|

You're only 17, I have chairs older than you.
You need to relax there Mike and stop taking things to heart. Only a joke, bro, I realise you're almost 16.
