My dads coming to visit to day , hes such an insensitive douchebag.
Im going through a kind of depression latley about my ninja game , i had all these plans for it to have a nice more cinematographic feel than the average flash with lots of atmosphere and storytelling but bit by bit all emotion and depth being takin away and it just feels like im going to churn out another sellout pile of crap , sure it may be more widley recieved but sometimes i just feel like i want to do something meaningful for once :( oh well thats life.
Go watch videos of Shank and God of War. Have the camera zoom into the player when he gets to a certain point in a combo, that is key.

Even if you already knew it just say "Sorry, I didn't phrase that very well but thanks anyway".

Sounds a harsh if you ask me. Did not come off like lecturing to me at all.
But, without turning this into 'something", i would like to say im in a similar pool as you, and what zrb describes is exactly what i have been striving for. Something as simple as camera movement does not seem important or difficult, but it seems the more i implement, the more professional my game feels. Can't really put my finger onto why.
Flash games (especially mine) tend to have little polish. Just kinda...slapped together with varying levels of slappy-ness. The more time i spend on the little things the more it feels good to me. Hard to convince myself that its all working out when hardly anyone plays the thing and tells me I'm on the right/wrong track.
Not sure where i was going with all that, but meh. Back to work. Stop distracting me people.
What bothers me in flash action games is the lack of proper environment. Top-down shooters are always just a large dull terrain with no obstacles, no walls. Just like a desert. So you press your WASD keys and move away from the zombies or aliens or whatnot, but it's always the same thing. I'd love to see a top-down shooter in realistic settings one day - say, in a large city or something. You run in the streets, you can enter buildings with WALLS and ROOMS, you can go up the stairs to different floors... stuff like that. I guess people are just too lazy for pathfinding?

And yeah I think the main reason I am ADD with flash games is because they are so similar. I end up just wanting to get little snippets of different gameplays and inspirations here and there, but i don't end up holding onto any one game because of all of them being a click away from each other.
same thing with my psp. gone were the days of having one game at all times and getting good at mastering that game. now i have a hacked psp with emulators (did this years ago, but still), and i constantly just want to play one level from each game in a car ride rather than playing an entire game through...i donno why
Flash as an atmospheric storytelling game device
I'm torn on the subject. On one hand, I would love to spend years making an epic game with an amazing story. A great full-scale SNES Japanese RPG. Post-apocalyptic action RPG side-scroller with hundreds of pieces of gear and a banging story... Lord knows there are hundreds of them, running around in my head at all times.
I don't feel that is where the Flash scene is now though... and it may never be there.
On the other hand, creating incredibly popular Flash games forces us to think outside of box. We can't just rely on 'epic.' If you created the original SNES Zelda, as a Flash game... it would fail. Someone would spend X minutes searching for the entrance to something, not find it, and move onto other things. Sure, now you can just Google a walk through, but when it first came out... it took months.
This forces us change our thinking to fit the medium and the demograph. How can I create an epic game, that also:
-Grabs the user from the start
-Is addictive
-Is easy to jump into without complicated control schemes or GUIs
-Is fun
-Gives instant gratification during the gameplay process.
You don't need to forgo the epic feel, or the atmospheric cinema blah blah..
You just need to make sure you integrate that with what makes a popular Flash game.
BomToons newest is a great example. If he would have zoomed in during combat, added fog and dynamic backgrounds ect.. ect... his game would have done just as well as it did and still had the feel you were going for.
I'll figure out how to do it one day
If you're so overly concerned about whether people will appreciate the effort that it stops you from from the putting in the effort at all, then you don't really care enough about it.
Most of the best atmospheric elements in games are never noticed.

Perhaps a person should get more/less front page posting power based on the users which comment on their posts. Not just the number of comments they get on their news posts, but also the notability of each user (calculated from forum posts, time on Newgrounds, level, awards, front page posting power, etc.; basically a user's e-penis) which does comment on their page. This prevents spammers from just creating spam accounts to comment on their page and gaining power. It also means that only users who post interesting things which generate comments will have the front page posting power to get others to see their interesting posts.
It may also allow users who get lots of comments but aren't artists to get front page posts, which could be either a good or bad side-effect
'Front page posting power' could either mean how many front page posts a user gets in a time period or for how long their posts stays on the front page.
Of course, this would be a bitch to implement.
Yeah I don't know what it's based off of now, but I get one every week. My post was up for awhile this past week so I'm not complaining but earlier today, looking at the news there are like 5 posts with no artist news or productive content...It just sucks for the people looking to get more fans on their upcoming movies/games
At 3/8/10 01:25 PM, Starogre wrote: Yeah I don't know what it's based off of now, but I get one every week.
I get one every two weeks. I need to rack up some more awards.
I hate having such a long time between making Front Page Posts. I feel like I need to have something important to post or else I'll have to wait a while for my next one... Then I don't have anything interesting for two weeks and thus a missed opportunity for minor information.
Did I just get pwned? Lol

If I were you I'd keep my mouth shut until I actually had anything done. Over-hyping to everyone about who you work with is only going to make you look like a massive tool if the project ends up being dropped.
also, I missed my chance to make an >9000 post. O, cruel destiny :-(

I've always thought that they should allot you front page posts on a per-submission basis, and only if it actually scores decently. The problem is that joe blow who wants to wish his stupid friend a happy birthday can do so if he has some shitty collab he and 17 people made for Clock Day.
I don't think Tom is very concerned about keeping the content of FP posts too 'serious', seeing how he uses them himself.
As long as the posts that bumps me down isn't complete spam then I don't care much, you are pretty much guaranteed a good amount of exposure anyway.
