Wait...isn't that EXACTLY what they want though? Didn't jobs say like "No flash until it works better", wouldn't optimizing it be what they want? Or they just want flash's overclocking gone in general...?

The main problem with Flash v Canvas is that there is no IDE atm and, as bloated and awful as the Flash IDE is, it is really easy to use. I don't think canvas will overtake flash any time soon, but adobe really do need to revamp their software packages. As soon as they bought Macromedia, flash, fireworks, dreamweaver, etc all became as awful and annoying as Photoshop always has been. Saying that, it's still easier to use Flash for a newbie than it ever would be trying to code for canvas.

I've never heard of Shutter Island but I must check it out =P

I don't see HTML5 doing away with Flash. Like people have already mentioned, I would cheerfully welcome a native HTML video player, but as for everything else...I doubt it will be this huge looming threat.

BTW...did anyone notice how wonky the collision detection was in that 'Asteroids' game link Inglor posted? Bizarre.

Seems to be getting a lot of media over the past months, so congrats with that and best of luck on it. Are you plannng to sell it via steam at any point?

I knew kotaku would fuck it up somehow (using a screenshot from the flash version) ("later this year") (not posting the trailer)
blegh

kotaku was pretty much peer pressured into doing the IGF interview thing, they didnt even email the finalists directly, they had someone at gamedev.net send the questions out

Also the problem with HTML5 is that all your source code is visible

I've known them to do a lot of hacky things when dealing with devs, but any publicity is good publicity right?

Yeah i was wondering about this, also if HTML can now do high end interactive media is it still a markup language?

You'd think that, but no, an article about how I impregnate women just so I can eat the aborted fetuses wouldn't really do me any good

Canvas Source Code

That's actually a pretty good point however:

-It's quite possible to decompile flash files as well.. and it IS happening. It's possible to encryt javascript as well...

-Even the most mod-unfriendly games get modded, and stealing is still stealing...

Still you make somewhat of a point

Silverlight
Why doesn't NG support it?

Silverlight is stupid.

another point against HTML5 is that every browser will execute the code differently. Some might be slow as hell running it, some might be fast but glitch out on some features, etc.

At least with flash, the plugin is handled by adobe, so you can assume it'll run roughly the same everywhere

That's a pretty interesting concern... I think that a sandbox is manditory.

I totally disagree, I think flash got way too bloated and that's what's killing it. I think they need to tone flash down. Make it sleeker and fun like it used to be... I mean hardware accel? that's great, AS3? that's fun, but you need to KISS...

Apologies; I meant AS3 should get more features, the ones you see some of the regs complaining about every time Adobe do a presentation about CS5's new additions. I agree that the IDE has become bloated and breaky. However, one or two of the tools are much appreciated (I presume, I've never used CS3/4), and AS3 is a fantastic addition to the program.

I think it would be great if flash would detect wether or not your browser is starting to lag and if it does deprive itself from resources...

Well, frame rate is, for the most part, an accurate indication of such things. For memory usage, AS3 already has a property which shows that. It is up to the programmer to set methods in order to rectify overuse of memory/processing power if needs be (after all, it would be hell to debug if Flash started messing with things it shouldn't be).

Doomsday-One, working on stuff better than preloaders. Marginally.

accepting new browser capabilities and even new css has always taken way long ... i think ive been waiting for atleast 5 years now for better font support. I dream of the day i can wake up and not have to use Arial, Georgia, and Times... I think html5 will be slow in really integrating with the mainstream if history has anything to say about it. That could be a good thing in terms of being able to see if its something thats going to be a viable creative tool or like silverlight, just something not worth catering too :p

I'm trying to install Flash CS3 but I keep getting errors saying I need to insert the disk, yet I downloaded the installer from Adobe's site :|

Any suggestions ?

Why not get CS4?

CS4 is utter shit, nothing else to say.

I sure hope this doesn't start a huge argument over cs3 and cs4

I play for the CS4 team. Multiple artboards in illustrator and GPU acceleration in photoshop makes makes life worth living.

The compatibility between the entire CS4 collection is just fantastic.

Only if you have I high-end computer, though. I admit that CS4 can get quite unresponsive on slower computers, but I don't really have to worry about that.

CS3 vs CS4

*ahem* Flash 8!

Seriously though, is it just me or does Flash 8 run shittily with Mac OS X? I thought I remember reading that somewhere. I can totally believe it.

Use FlashDevelop with Flex SDK for the code and the IDE for putting the animation together and, if you have if, photoshop for art.

You'll soon realise how little you actually need the IDE and may well even create your own animation class.
