I envy you.

RE: Self Esteem

I feel better about myself after I excercise or hang out with friends, or get something done i either didn't want to do or did want to do. It all has to do with endorphins(sp...?), they make you feel better. I have lower self esteem when i start thinking about everything, and comparing myself to others, and especially thinking about the past, and things i regret. i'll say my self esteem is at 50, maybe 55, because its around neutral.

Random-Off-Topic-Question-Not-Fit-For-General

How come whenever I read about how black holes eat up stuff and the universe is going to end and all that jazz I suddenly feel really depressed?

:'(

Anyways, to a real topic:

Flash Time

How long does it take you to make a short, minute-long flash on average? I'd have to say... about a week if I work with inspiration, which I seem to be lacking.

RE: Flash Time

If I don't procrastinate(much), probably 2-3 days(Lacking artwork). But, since I do a lot, a week probably.

Flash movie production time

Usually takes me a month to make a movie, sometimes less if there is a tight deadline. I work better when im up against brutal deadlines. Theres something erotic about pushing yourself to your limits to beat a deadline.

I plan it as I go, thats one cool thing about working with a deadline it sort of forces you to be resourceful and think on the run. I think that it gives your movies a sense of honesty and rawness to it as well.

Occasionally i'll have the monster movie that i'll have a vision for it in the shower and its just a matter of making that vision a reality. Its only happend a few times, but when it has happend they are movies ive always been really proud of because its just magical how it came together. thank you flash jesus up there.

Hey, Anyone have a link to the bit on the bitey castle website with the article about vCam. Not the other site, but the entry on Adam Phillips Site. Thanks

Luis' Monster Flashes

I have those sorts of inspirations but I never have the confidence to take a stab at such a fantastic idea. Unless I'm forced to continue, if I start something and it doesn't look good immediately I scrap the idea all-together and either move on to something else or just find some other means to consume myself. When I have an art project due it forces me to keep trying over and over again (usually within a very short time frame because I left things to the final hour) and that becomes frustrating. I plan to try to apply this to flash by making one of my final projects a flash animation but I have very low hopes.

Re: Production Time Frame

I always get distracted or side tracked with an animation after only a few seconds of draw animation but it usually takes me over an hour to get a fews seconds of animation. If I sat down one day with an idea and solid motivation I could probably bust out a minute of animation in one day. But one of the biggest variables is frame rate and I still use 12 fps.

Re: Self Esteem Thing
I'd say about 60-90. It's very variable for me. :)

Flash Multiplayernessy
Ii've been looking around the internets for ways to make multiplayer games with Flash. Has anyone here ever done something of that sort? Could you recommend anything to read/whatever? :P

Ideas
Luis saying about how he can come up with some really good Flash ideas in the shower reminded me of a discussion I wanted to start.
Where do you usually get your ideas? Not what gives you ideas but where you are that makes you think. For me I think best when I have a shower because there is no distractions and the hot water makes the place seem more comfortable, the water also blocks out any sounds that may distract me too. There really is nothing to focus on in there so that is where I do all my thinking, a majority of my ideas comes from there and usually when I have one I remember some old ideas and work with them.

Flash in School
So earlier on people mentioned some stuff about doing Flash in school, I didn't get to reply to that because at the time I was busy. Generally I try to do all my projects in Flash because that is the program that I am best at. I haven't done a lot with it but I havn't gotten a lot of oppurtunities to do that too.
I also picked a class next year(applied computer applications) in which we learn about Paint Shop Pro and Flash, I dunno why they don't do Photoshop because the school has Photoshop on just about every computer and same with Studio MX. The thing that annoys me though is that the teacher is teaching a bunch of people who don't even know what Flash is how to animate with it and then wants them to make a five-minute Flash, which also is storyboarded on paper, I think this teacher expects too much from the class IMO.
Oh yeah, my friend is in it and she told me that they do the Lessons section of Flash to learn how to use it.

Three minute showers AND long hair? How do you do it? My hair is shoulder length and it takes the better half of sixever to wash it.

I've done some small multiplayer with php and assuming other peoples positions while it waits for more data to come in. You should look up XML in AS:Main if you wish to get into multiplayer.

Ideas Generation

The shower is totally the wrong place for me for the same reason that it is good for everyone else - it has no distractions. For me that is just no inspiration. I don't get idas in any one state, my ideas always bounce off seeing things. Usually I'll see something and have crazy idea about it and then realise that it could be used for making a movie. I actually have a policy of whnever I think of an idea I like, writing it down or drawn a mini storyboard of my idea of doing a sketch of the character so I can always come back to it later.

My favourite place to get ideas is actually more of a state. I get brilliant crazy ideas when I'm really tired. I mean like really really super tired like when you've been awake for two days and can't think straight anymore. Being tired, I find, is like being drunk, but with more clarity + memory. You come up with the same crazy shit but you have better control of it.

Production Time

I could make a minute of animation in way less than a day. Maybe not in flash, but in other mediums. I did one fo those freestyle flash battle things a while ago and made 15 seconds in 1 hour, which included coming up with the idea, animating sound and everything. At uni we get a different task every week and I usually spend one day, or a part of it making an animation. The shortest one I made was 20 seconds I think. My favourite of my portal entries is my Alkaline Trio one and I did that over the space of three days though one fo them I didnt actually do anything on it. That's like 3+ mins though.
Like Luis I usually work near to the deadline but it's usually through poor planning/procrastinating, not some kinky fetish. Saying that, i was fucking pumped by the end of the freestyle flash battle, I started slow and my the end I was just furiously scraping it together. Intense.

RE: Missed me?
I noticed, kinda, but I havn't been paying too much attention to the Flash Forum recently.

RE: Idea

Hmm, I should record my ideas more often like you said TheHappySheep but I can see where you are coming from, for me the ideas usually are something that just resurfaces in my mind while I take a shower and I make it not just any idea, but a super-duper-idea! With lasers.

Motivation!
Anyone got any tips on how I can motivate myself into learning ActionScript? The problem isn't maintaining it it's starting it, I have a book on it because AS: Main and other websites are either too cluttered, aren't sorted in the order of learning or just aren't good at teaching me how too.
So can anyone give me a few tips to finish off the book? I read the first chapter which was an intro to AS then half of the second which was about variables and I have a basic understanding of them.

Ideas in the shower

If I ever get an idea in the shower, it'll be to do with the shower. I remember I was thinking about a FPS game in there that's whole hook was that it had really good looking rain.

Actually, now I think about it I thought of this one idea I really liked while in the shower.. intresting.

Bah my head is empty right now.. I was trying to think of some intresting discussion to bring to the table, but I eel so sloppy and dull right now. I don't want to do anything just lie hear and wait for Jeremy Kyle to come on.

Here's an idea. Someone send me a song (Gmail), and i'll send one back. We can get a little circuit going. Anybody send me anything and i'll send you something back.

Nah, I can't think of much when in the shower except getting clean. All of that splashing water is too distracting for my low attention span :P

I get most good ideas while just walking to places, either ony my own or with a really boring person (one of the main reasons why I ask for lifts as little as possible). Your average walk is totally boring, so it's easy just to think about important things :)

Heh, that's looking pretty good. Except from the wall, which looks weird :P Have you considered giving the inner indentations a lighter shade; like a step darker from the background? I generally do that with stuff like that, and it looks pretty good with minimal effort.

I'm working on a Christmas game for the AG contest. Basically, it's a point and click RPG; the inventory and ideas of combining items are the largest part of the game, but there's quite s bit of walking around and talking to people.

Whenever I'm making stuff like this, time constraints usually mean that it's about a third of the size and quater the quality as I intend when I start, but this is looking to be fairly well on track and I personally think that the inventory and speech systems are pretty sexy :P

Anyone else?

Re:Watchya Working on?

I'm just finishing off my second game for this month (yeah, it ran into December, bleh), its a 3D arcade flying shoot'em-up, like those top down games like Raiden, but in 3D.

Screenshot of a cutscene + flash

And thats how my flash is set up. I have that layout saved under the Workspace Layout menu.

As soon as this game's done, it'll be an underwater game and an advance wars type straregy game.

I'm gonna start making 3D stuff after my current couple of projects are tied up, so hopefully that'll be the ideal opportunity to turn my back on non-OOP.

Re: Projects
Lets look at the project ticklist for late 2006 and 2007...

- Convoy's still in the script and concept art stage. Whilst it's awesome getting pictures of off road vehicles and turning them post apocalyptic, I really need to work on my vehicle modelling skills in Max. That and I've got to learn how to draw Fedora hats properly...

- The games with Blaze and Won for the XMas contests are going well. I'll be forcing myself awake over the weekend to finish the engines.

- Rockstar's still a huge text document sitting on my desk top. Working out a system very slowly...

- Canned the game I was going to try and do for Day of the Ninja. Shame.
