There was an awful lot of theory in Computing, and when you know quite a bit about computing already.. it's really dull. Sounds good that you can use anything to do the tasks, but there aren't many C languages - C, C++, C# (though that's not really used for 'normal' programming). If you're learning C, you'll be able to do C++ - it's just added full OOP (++ = OOP?). Have fun anyway :P

i will try must best atm we are just outputting our code to a command prompt that sucks no GUI yet cos we have to know programming, i will learn whatever im taught but flash will always stay thanks

Haha, I doubt you'll progress further than the console.. you don't need to know how to create windows really :/ You need to learn variables, structs, loops, functions, pointers, file I/O, classes, etc before you bother with windows xP That's with C of course, Java may be different because that's a much more visual language and it's a lot easier to use windows and stuff because it's in an integrated environment (JDE) and stuff.

Delphi and Pascal are languages ^^ I've never used them but they're moderately popular. Do you know AS?

I think £100 spending money for the full weekend should be about enough but remember that you need to pay to get there.

I took £100 and had a teensy bit left over (though bear in mind that I don't generally drink alcohol whilst I do enjoy food and girly fruit-drinks).

Prince of Persia

Started playing Prince of Persia on the Super Famicom. I've already completed it on MD but wanted to replay it and heard there are new levels on the Snes version.

Anyways - did anyone ever use the 'block' button when swordfighting on the 2D versions? I've only ever used attack and the only time I get (or remember being) hurt is when the guard hits me before I get my sword out.

I studied game design there. I'm the only one of my friends to not get mugged.

I recommend Etsuko for cheap Asian food (its near the cinema), avoiding all modules with [lecturer's I can name over PM if you really want to know], and not going with Campus Lifestyle for second year housing.

I sent my rant to Liam.

The general gist of it was a bit negative. But I'll reiterate some points I made...

No matter how much your university claims, it's name is not going to get you into the game industry on its own. That kind of thing's up to you, your talents and your ability to pick up skills and do your own legwork. You don't sleep in until 2pm every day as a student - especially not if you're on a software engineering course. That way makes you a jaded wreck of a crappy 3d artist like myself who had to fall back on his flash hobby to make ends meet.

All Students Going to Uni this month: Best of luck. Work your asses off and enjoy the cheap pound-a-pint beer.

Hello from North Carolina
Well, since Ike was heading straight for our home back in Houston TX, my dad decided to go ahead and evacuate. And since our closest family is in North Caroline, well here we are. I have to say it's kind of annoying that I had to relocate and whatnot... and I might lose my computer which would be really really lame :( At least I have a backup of all the files but it's still sad to maybe see all the hardware blown to pieces.. sigh well that's life I guess.

Oh and it took us around 20 hours in car to get from Houston TX, to Charlotte North Carolina, was not fun at all :( I just hope the hurricane doesn't do much damage.. sigh On the upside I missed school :D

PS: Using a Mac now.. I really really want my XP with FF back :(

PC > Macs > Linux

Although there are a lot of open source games for linux, most suck.

J1mp, thats sounds like a fucking awesome idea. Sign me up, probably for a cutscene. I might work on some character/ background design if you want as well though.

Anyway, just a couple questions.
- What is the Genre, Action? Or is it still in the production stage atm?
- Who is going to design the characters etc.?
- Is there a certain style this is all going to be drawn in, to look uniform? Because some people are used to the line tool, but I always use the brush tool...

I think it will work itself out, but If you could get back to me on that, it'd be great.
Cheers man.

I'm a post whore :(

Currently addicted to Green Wing (going through all the episodes on Channel 4 On Demand again, halfway through Series 2. WIN!!!!).

Anyone heard of Project Euler? I think it's www.projecteuler.com but if not google it, a really interesting project with a tonne of problems to solve however you want with any programming language you want. It's main purpose is to help you learn a language yourself, I might go through it with C++.

Not anymore, new look facebook for everybody now. I personally dont like it, it takes the facebook charm away to have user's pages so.. multiple and organized. And i feel the news page looks less organized now, and feel it's liek too big... The good thing is that you dont have to search a lot to find somebody elses wall, im talking about those people who have a lot of useless aplications with chains and images and stuff and that it was impossibel to find their walls... but i still dont like it >.>

Yes macs are more capable and all that, or so apple says, but i dunno.. what can you actually do on a mac? I mean YES to everything related to high end business. Professional movie editing, Professional sound editing (probobly most famous musician's music are edited on macs) and proffessional photo editing, all of that stuff. Great!

But really, why does the average person need a Mac then? Everyone likes playing videogames sometimes, and download random things for the internet that most likely are .exe

Please don't spam me "MAC HATER!" I'm not a hater, if i had a mac, i'd use it. But for everday stuff, owning a 3000$ machine to talk with friends on msn, create flash movies in my spare time and browse the interwebs, for a much cheaper price at that, PC seems like a much more sensible choice.

No-one bothers to create or find viruses for Macs. :P Anyways I've only ever used PC's. Don't know why.... I think I'm prejudiced or something.

Education and Programming

I'm doing computing now at college, and found out that we're gonna be learning C++. My teacher is a legend though, he used to be fuck-off rich from his programming but changed to a teacher because he didn't find his job interesting or challenging.

I think that's a bullshit argument. Apple's market share is around 4 to 7% (couldn't find an exact figure). That's millions and millions of computers. Of all the tens of thousands hackers there are in the world you would think there would be at least a few hundred interested in making some serious viruses for the Mac, if only to prove that Macs are not so safe after all.

The lack of viruses for the Mac is partially caused because there aren't a whole lot of them out there (relatively speaking), but I also think it's caused because they're generally safer (specifically designed for the hardware the OS is running on etc.) than your average household pc.

Yeah well one of the main things I have to think about is whether it will work as a collab. Obviously due to the nature of it the artwork would be inconsistent, which might make the whole thing not flow so well.

Yeah I suppose you would class it as an action game, kinda like the Mercenaries game theEXP and the swain did with the way it uses a load of simple gametypes, but this would be a lot more streamlined and feel less of a collection of 4 different games.
