Superficial Digging into The Tax Man
Rejoice... I think I've worked it out...

If you live in the UK, you are not required to pay income tax on your Flash contest winnings... provided that it's unconnected to your skill and trade. So effectively, if you keep Flash a hobby and follow a career completely unconnected to Web, Games and Design, you're in the clear. Otherwise, by law you've got to send off a Self Assessment form if you earn a total of £6035 or more from all sources in a year (there are higher limits if you're past retirement age... as far as I can tell though, minors are NOT exempted from Income Tax...)

If you live in the US you pay income tax on all contest winnings regardless.

Not all, you have to earn enough in winnings to become a target for the IRS.

Usually you'll get W2's from companies your've freelanced/won substantial amounts from... come tax time.

Even so, it's something everyone needs to bear in mind. Especially with the worldwide economy the way it is (England and Germany are predicted, by the EU, to enter a full blown recession this quarter), the last thing we need are students and kids dicking about with Flash, making money, and then getting shafted because they forgot they need to give 30% over to Uncle Sam and Mr Darling.

British say maths because it's better.

Get over it.

I think it is bullshit having to pay taxes on small winnings. Most of the shit people do here is only for fun, and don't really think about doing it for a living. Plus if people have full time jobs, they already pay out a shitload of money for the income taxes. It would be better to get winnings "under the table" and have no paper trail to lead back to that money and where it came from.

Religion
I too was brought up "catholic", although my parents are both agnostic and don't go to church I did go to a Catholic primary school, high school and even college (they're all "connected" administratively if that is a word). I thus had to have R.E. lessons, which isn't too bad, because they near the end of high school and in college it was more philosophic.. still a waste of my time but not OMG GOD IS TRUEEE. Although my college "PTE" (philosophy, theology and ethics.. a.k.a. R.E.) teacher did get suspended for 2 weeks for telling a fellow student they were going to hell because he was a gay. She was freaky. Anyway, with the insight of the Religious world.. I can further understand how much bull it is :X

The only thing I can guess is that Firefox is managing to send two or three posts all at once before the system has a chance to register my last post :/

In theory someone could get something to post hundreds of times in one batch. Before they got their account deleted.

People that believe in God are the new black.

Collab Splits
It's hard to be fair when coders don't understand what goes into good art, and artists don't understand what goes into good code...and neither can be judged strictly by hours because often, the better you are in both fields, the less time it takes to make something awesome.

But, my experience has been that people are generally pretty fair when it comes down to deciding the split at the end of a project. Even though I haven't done the "decide at the end" thing on many projects, I agree that the end of the project is the best time to make that judgement, though sometimes knowing how much $ is coming your way early on can be motivating.

I'd go with the 'a game's worth of coding' = 'a game's worth of drawing' rule myself. When I'm multitasking, I usually spend a fair bit more time drawing than coding, but the coding is pretty intensive, full-concentration work, whereas drawing and animating (especially fbf 'tweening and shading) can be handled alongside some TV or a radio show, so I'd say it more or less evens out. Also, I'm a slow drawer to begin with.

You tell em bomtoons, everyone needs to stop being religist. And the way I see it anyway, ultimately religion, belief, or lack of belief is a personal choice, it's like arguing with someone that likes to wear tighty whities, it's not really affecting me, so why would I care. Of course there are religious extremists who blow themselves up and hate other people because of god...in those cases I feel like we're obligated to persuade them that 50 virgins are not waiting for them in heaven if they murder us. But my point is it's a personal belief and when you die and nothing happens, it doesn't really matter.

if I die and there actually is a hell, I will be pissed =p

that's a weak argument coaly. religion attempts to stop and slow down science all the time. every time there's some significant scientific / medical advance, religion says that it's against jesus or whatnot. i read an interesting article that listed all the times that religion slowed science down. If it were only a simple belief in a god, without anything more than that I would be fine with that. but for 2000 years they are only doing bad to the world.

That's a good point... it just seems pompous and futile to try to convince someone god isn't real, or whatever their belief isn't real, because no one really knows what is real or true and what isn't, you know?

Also patu... Nick Pasto is bomtoons, we're all listed because we made castle crashing the beard, and tom is a swell guy, so he put us in the special thanks...
