AS 3

Finally took the leap of faith. Bought a book, downloaded the Trial, and for the next 30 days I'm dedicated to learning AS 3. Wish me luck. I'm also learning how to use flex and making swf's with it (which is so much more work than the Flash IDE) but I mean it's fun.

Also, I'm 21 tomorrow, so I'll be off being merry and gay, drinking my liver to oblivion, then using it to vanquish Daedra :3

It's like first learning AS 2 but with a lot more power. I love programming with an OOP because of how easy it makes programming games, so I'm happy AS3 is more of an OOP language than procedural like AS 1 and 2.

Anyways, good luck to you. I still remember when you were learning AS2... I'm so proud :')

I do C++ too :) I'm just not that into it anymore, I'm not much into coding. I think at some point I'm gonna pick up Python or Lua so I can do scripting for video games. C++ is more for programming the core of video games, I'm not sure how into that you are, but I rather control the game flow. I think thats why I like AS3 so much, it's like mixing C++ and a scripting language, giving you complete control over game development.

Argh... My flash is still not opening, I've tried several reboots and even reinstalled it to find the same outcome, google isn't helping either. Surely this has happened to someone else?

I hate to double post but I had to say this. The book that initially caught my attention, and promoted my leap into AS3, is called Foundation ActionScript 3.0 with Flash CS3 and Flex. It's by Steve Webster, Todd Yard and Sean McSharry. It's a really good read, very thorough, very thick, and only 40 bucks. I've seen smaller, more dull books ranging into the 60's, so when I saw it was 40 bucks I didn't hesitate buying it. So far it's very informative. It even has a case study, which is a section where the authors go through the process of completing an assignment. Although a case study based on a game would have been better, it's based on an XML driven Image gallery, which is probably a lot more beneficial for me since I already know how to make games.

Anyways, it's a really awesome buy. It's probably not too good for someone without exposure to programming in some degree, so I wouldn't recommend it for an absolute newbie, but if you are like myself it would be a very good tool. I've spent the past 5 years learning AS2. In that time I've gone through php, html, C/C++, and some other misc. programming experience, so I can say I'm well verse in programming. The book shoots through the rudimentary garbage, and jumps right into how it applys to AS3, which I love.

So, while it's not for the green, it's definetly the best read out there for those trying to safely transition. Also, it's Mac and PC compatible, so for all you Steve Jobs supporters, they've got you covered too.

For me one of them has got to be people srambling to grab first posts in topics by 'important' people on internet forums.

Not only is it absolutley retarded, but it results in the first 5 posts of those topics to be morons posting FIRST, or even more stupidly people posting SECOND or THIRD and so on.

there is no loading screen, it's a single black screen, and you will hear audio, I think you have to press enter to start.
