Haha, someone should have seen that one coming. I have to wait for a somewhat official trustworthy 2.0 hack. Shouldn't take much longer than a month I hope.

Yep thats what i was gonna say. I could live happily here in the us on a low-end uk gig :)

hell i just need enough to pay my rent, my car, and my bar tab and im good.

Oh I thought the cost was actualy quite similar (well maybe a year ago, before the recessions)

I was thinking the solution would be to build a self sustaining robot of myself and send him to the uk to work and just send me checks. I'd be doing well on a uk paycheck.

Actually that is somewhat of a true story to that... i read an article a long time ago about a developer (i think he was php or some sort of back end dev) and how he was fired from his job cause they had caught on that he never actually did any work.. all his work he would subcontract to india ... it was rather brilliant.. he would basically just show up to work ... turn in the goods and then clock out. he got away with it for like years.

I never got it either. I mean, I can get into it they actually put some creativity and surprise into it, like embedding the video in something else so you can't tell what it is before it's even loaded, but 99% of the time it's just a link to a YouTube page.

Plus linking an entire fucking video for the sake of a five or ten second joke seems like a waste of bandwidth.

E24

They just had a little bit about the status and pay of voice actors in games. It had a little bit talking to Otacon's voice actor (Christopher Randolph), and a slightly pretentious who did a voice for GTAIV.

The basic gist of it was that game voice actors get a fraction of the pay of film stars (a few thousand for the GTA guy), and have a lot less status. So, what do you guys think? Are we going to end up seeing a rise in the status of voice actors in games over the next decade or so? So far the only guy I can name from memory for a role in a game is David Hayter, but it'd be nice to see game voice actors rising to a status where they could get some big names doing voices.

It's because Voice Actors aren't part of the Film Actors Guild, which means there's no rules or anything surrounding what they can be paid etc.

I don't neceserily think this is too much of a bad thing, it would irritate me if half the budget of a video game was going on hiring the voice of the main character, especially when it's the programmers who put in HUGE amounts of work to make Xbox 360 etc. games.

I think the guy who played Niko whining recently made him seem like a bit of knob, Rockstar could have easily just not given him the job and given it to one of the millions of other people who can do a convincing Eastern European accent. He'll end up getting more money from them anyway since they'll need to use him again so I don't know why he's getting so upset about it.

Voice actors

I was a bit curious about how much they get payed as well. The main reason that they are paid less, is because the are only suppling the voice of the character. True, that famous actors voice act in 3d movies and get paid loads. But in video games, its really the video game character recognizability rather than the voice actors. The video game companies aren't hiring famous voice actors to do voices for another character, mainly they just want an actor to fit the character.

Another big reason, as far as film actors vs. voice actors go, in video games, movies are based around the actor's dialog and movements whereas video games are more focused on the gameplay and the voice acting is more secondary or optional.

The people who work in the other aspects of a game, such as visuals and audio also put a HUGE amount of work into it, so it isn't all about the programmers.

You can say the same thing about films too, of course. A tonne of actors get paid a ridiculous amount. It's the same in sports and stuff. Essentially, the more enjoyable your job is, the more you can expect to get paid for it.

Anyway, I was more pushing towards the issue of where you see acting in the gaming industry in the next few years. Could it ever rival film acting?
