Dammit, I keep posting, only to find Stamper already said stuff.
Here's another way to look at it. We aren't giving users BLOGS, we are giving users the same thing I have always had on the front page. Back then it wasn't called a BLOG, it was called posting on the front page. The term BLOG was created by stupid people who needed to feel like they were part of a movement, when all they were doing was posting on the internet, just like everyone had been from the moment the internet was created.
So now everyone will get their own front page to post on and their own content to showcase. We won't call them blogs if the word bothers people too much.
People seem scared about NG turning into some social networking site, but NG has always been a social networking site. Before Myspace and Friendster reared their ugly heads, NG had user accounts, forums, chat, webcams, profiles with pictures, a buddy list system for multi-author submissions.
Hell, we had a user search where you could search NG for female users between the ages 18-24 who had profile pictures. The only reason that feature is gone is because our database couldn't support all the searches, but that doesn't mean it won't come back some day - and when it does I'm sure people will compare it to Myspace, even though Myspace didn't exist back when we were originally doing it.
So bottom line, if you are afraid of the new features, simply don't use them. The rest of NG will still be here and the front page will always be full of Flash submissions (and some audio submissions too).
