Jesus-Christ did manage to get Jesus, though.

The requests are a constant stream... It will be interesting to query the DB tonight and see how many names are now valid. Before making the change, here is what we were up against:

74: users with --
156: users with __
1176: users that start with -
1251: users that end with -
528: users that start with _
738: users that end with _
187,142: users with _

The underscore is the real killer... If we only had to remove leading and trailing dashes, this would be much easier. :)

Oh wow...That's a lot of freakin people..... Have fun with the ;)

I'm still wondering why you're changing it.....but I can see it's for the good of all....

It's the same account, just a different name....so your account will still be credited.

Why?

I loved my dashes. Now I look retarded because "Ethereal" was already taken.

Damnit Tom.

Good God. That's going to be tough. I've always hated underscores anyway, those who have them who were in my "I'll rate your name" thread will remember. :P

They just look ugly to be honest.

Response to New Username Standards 2006-09-09 15:05:56

Well, atleast my old alias is still available. I'll see if I can make it less stupid with the numbers. I'm sure I can get someone to fix my sigs when i'm done. :/

Response to New Username Standards 2006-09-09 15:06:11

Well I'm happy because it let me get the name I wanted originally.

_ is so much better than - though :(
wonder how long it'l take for people to over use the other characters at the start and end of their user names...

It's not so bad, hell, it matches my website url now

Thank you, Tom!

Thank you for finally recognizing the cheezyness of aliases with underscores and hyphens!

That has been perhaps my greatest pet-peeve since joining, and now that they are eliminated, I am eternally indebted to you!

Happiness! :D

It kinda sucks for me since I recently had to remove the underscore from my username, but oh well. it's for the best.

It doesn't affect me, I'm just curios as to why its been done. Could it perhaps be part of the new layout?

Sports forum?

Response to New Username Standards 2006-09-09 15:10:49

O.o For the best, right? I think..

Response to New Username Standards 2006-09-09 15:10:51

While this doesn't affect me, I think it's a weird rule. I'm not complaining or saying that it's wrong, just that it's weird and doesn't make much sense.

I mean the good part I see is for people finally getting their true username without underscores or dashes, like for example _Joe_ now being Joe, but I don't see what the problem has ever been for names with underscores in them or dashes at the end. Seems like a big waste of time.

It seems almost impossible to do all of those by yourself!

It pretty much has to filter through one person, otherwise we would both be getting messages from the same users and it would be wasting our time. The only real solution for stuff like this is to have a general "user issue submission system", which I already prepped the forms for a while back, we just need to make it functional.

Yeah I was wondering what was going to happen with -Knox-, or should I say Knox. Anyways I never had hyphens or underscores, so I think my name will still be acceptable.

Tom, is there any way you could change my name to "Tantalus"? The user with that name has no flash and has never posted on the BBS, and I can't even seem to find his account at all.

The bad side is that most people who use underscores or hyphens use them because the alias without them are aleady taken.

Tom, if you can see all the usernames with hyphens and underscores in their usernames like that, doesn't that mean you can see all the usernames with Clock in them? :O

That would be really interesting to see!
