All That Remains alone, make me want to listen to Metalcore again. This morning at 7 AM before going to sleep I placed my iPod on shuffle mode and ended up listenning to the track The Air That I Breathe from their album The Fall Of Ideals. I can't help but say that some metalcore bands really know how to get shit done. I will even go as far as saying that this is one of my favorite albums of all time.
I have to admit though, that their first effort really isn't my favorite. It's okay I guess, but I didn't love it. Maybe I would like it better today because I do remember there was great moments on this record and that it was closer to Melodic Death Metal back then, compared to what they evolved into.
Behind Silence And Solitude
From These Wounds
Their second album This Darkened Heart is a masterpiece. This is where All That Remains really found their sound.
And Death In My Arms
Focus Shall Not Fail
Then they released a more accessible record, one with more clean vocals, clean melodies, but without any less energy, without any less All That Remains unique sound. The album The Fall Of Ideals to me is a masterpiece, maybe even more than This Darkened Heart. If there is one album with very memorable tracks, different emotions, diversified riffs and incredibly good drumming, it's this one.
Whispers (I Hear You)
The Air That I Breathe
Problem is that they kind of went downhill since then. On Overcome they had a different producer, the sound production sounded weird and didn't fit their personnality. The vocals didn't even sound like it was Phil Labonté singing them... Something wrong happenned on this record... The music was all poppy, they followed the cute-core fashion of the time and kind of failed to retain anything that made they good. Well, I shouldn't say "anything" because they still have some sweet riffs on that album and decent or good tracks, but as a whole, it's not as memorable as their previous two albums. In fact, it is rather forgettable.
Before The Damned
Chiron
And their last album? I dunno... They sound like they are trying to be August Burns Red. They chug all the time, and they sound like any mediocre metalcore band. Well, not exactly. They still have some very epic riffs with the All That Remains feel. But in general I feel that this effort is even worst then Overcome. I heard one track on the record that really catched my attention and that I liked... Can't remember which one it was though... I have to admit that I didn't give it much of a listen as I didn't really like what I heard. Maybe I should give it another spin...
