So, I was feeling bored, so I decided to check out this week's award winners. Since it had been quite some time since I played a horror-based point-and-click, I gave a go to the Review Crew Pick, FHTH: Chapter 2 - Part A. Not fucking bad, not fucking bad at all. I highly recommend y'all give it a go.
But that's not what the majority of this post is about (although I'm not belittling FHTH).
In the reviews, I saw that a lot of people were comparing the game to a little something called Exmortis. I had heard of the game, of course, but I'd never actually checked it out (kind of like how I only watched the entire Madness series a couple months ago).
I turned down the lights, plugged in the headphones, and plugged myself in to Exmortis.
...MOMMY NO :'(
Scary as fucking hell! There's only a handful of piss-your-pants moments, but you're on edge the entire game, listening to the background sounds and glancing over every piece of scenery, hoping that you won't scream too loud when something fucked up happens...very tense stuff. I took the "wrong" ending the first time I played, and it was very...evil and methodical, that's all I'll say. The 'real' ending isn't as scary, but it is much, much cooler.
So, I'm freaking out, right? And then I notice in the author comments that Exmortis 3 is being made. Which obviously means that there's a part two. I check the author's flash list, and yep, there it is.
I made the stupid mistake of playing Exmortis 2 before I had fully calmed down from the first installment. Exmortis 2 is MUCH more freaky than the first...the entire post-apocalyptic shit always gets Slash going. Game was a lot longer and harder, too.
I'd make a sex pun, but I'm still too jumpy.
I think the reason why it freaked me out so much is that the described apocalypse (which is very heavily detailed in journals and newspaper clippings throughout the game) is realistic. There are two kinds of horror genres---realistic and non-realistic.
Example of non-realistic would include virus-induced zombies. VIRUSES DO NOT WORK THAT WAY. It may be more scientific than, say, a demonic force ravaging the world, but it's (somewhat ironically) not as realistic. Other than the existence of demons, nothing precludes such a catastrophe...where with the virus/mutagen apocalypse shit, you have to throw an entire belief system out the window to accept it. I mean, what kind of motherfucking virus kills its host and then brings it back from the dead? With demons, it's just "we didn't know about them."
So yeah. Exmortis 2 was fucking chilling and fucking AWESOME. The ending was godly. M. Night Shyamalan could take lessons from this work---THAT is how you do a twist.
If any of you haven't played them already (kinda doubtful, as it's often only dumb ol' Slash who's late to the party), I highly recommend them.
NO SPOILERS IN THE EGB THOUGH.
