That's right... we used to actually have fun in here; not every post was a problem. In fact, it was a common occurrence to see this thread get derailed and go off on tangents - and usually by your truly, although 'Cobra was known for adding fuel to that fire.

He's just remembering the good old days, back when the NGPD still existed; where we had regular roll calls and votes on new recruits - and EGSC EagleRock kept my ass in line - or, at least tried to, anyways. We would have "interesting" discussions about our "indoctrination ceremonies" for new recruits - strictly fictitious, of course, but it kept the greenhorns in line when they start reading things like "an unmarked van full of midget ninjas armed with assorted battery powered hand tools, some whip cream and a goat will be by to pick you up soon - don't bother to scream, you live in a bad neighborhood and no one cares" - Yes, it raised a few eyebrows, but it was all in fun, a complete parody just to break up the day.

We all work hard here - and it's perfectly fine by me if you guys want to have a little fun or off-topic conversations now and then. Yes, we are the EGB - but we are also people, too.

Now, along the lines of indoctrination and bringing in new recruits - we used to depend on the NGPD to bring new recruits our way. It was a place where someone could start at 0/0/0 and work into becoming a helpful part of the fight against crud in the portal. But they shut down a while ago for various reasons, and now, there really isn't a source for newbies to join in the flash-fighting fun.

So, this is my idea - and I want to open it up to discussion to all members, visitors and support users who frequent this forum:

How about creating a section of the EGB called "Elite Guard ROTC"? We would accept most new users in general good standing (normal whistle, better than civilian, no obvious detrimental posting habits, etc.) and add them to the roster as ROTC trainees. They would post here, report flashes, and get help along the way to becoming a "Private". Once they reach private, if they have met all of the requirements of the Barracks (Silver whistle, fair voting ratio, helpful posts and reviews, etc) then they graduate into the Elite Guard - and as such, will be able to be considered for different duties and have more say in the daily operations of the Barracks.

Of course, during their time in the ROTC, if a user feels that this just isn't the place for them, they can easily request to leave, no harm, no foul. On the other hand, should someone join, but just not get the hang of things here (even after repeated coaching), they might be subject to administrative dismissal.

So, what do you think? Would an ROTC work here? Do you think it might bring in new recruits?

I appreciate that -- and have to say, you always seem to have a meaningful good read typed up when I come by here. I think what has helped the most, honestly, is the NG community itself in that regard. Just having something to do and people to talk to has alleviated most of the pain, though I still have violent spells of grief if I don't keep myself in check.

@Byteslinger, you bring up a very interesting idea especially now that the PD is defunct, and I would like to see that happen. After all, we do get visitors now and then that do want to join our ranks, and they really have nowhere to turn otherwise. It sounds like good, all-inclusive fun -- and I really do miss the discussions we used to have here. Part of the reason I haven't been back as much as I feel I should is that the sense of community has been falling despite the importance of the barracks rising. To old regs, it's almost off-putting. I'd love to see that homey feeling come back to the EGB too.

Relax, my friend. We are all on the same side here. Cobra was just catching up on a few things after being away for a while.

I encourage all of our members to add a touch of personality and life to this place. We take our tasks seriously, but we are all people at heart - so an off-topic question, or random post, or birthday wish or personal update has always been welcome. Of course, we can't go too crazy (well, we could, but we shouldn't) - there are rules to follow, after all.

We're both long time members of Newgrounds, and we've seen a lot of changes over the past 12 years - some good, and some not. But the one thing that keeps this place going is passion - passion from the developers to upload work, and passion from the users and mods to keep things in balance and make it a great place for everyone.

Passion is part of the human spirit, and certainly part of building teamwork. Sort of, there's definitely a lot of content made for youtube and uploaded here as an afterthought, but I find that stuff doesn't gain much traction on this end. The high rated NG content is still proper, solid animation.
