Want a really annoying "Guy" to be? Try being the "Computer Guy." You'll lose lots of sleep on it, especially if you're good at it. You're looked at as a deity of technology that is there to fix every single bug, virus, trojan, worm, crash, error, slowdown, malfunction, and minor computer annoyance in existence. :-)
When you finish fixing something, be sure to tell them "OH, BY THE WAY...YOU'RE WELCOME" in a really obnoxious way. YOU HAVE EARNED THIS RIGHT.
i am worried some people may not get the reference...
Try being "The Computer Gal!" When I first show up, the general thought is that no woman could possibly be capable of extreme feats of geekiness. "Oh, this is broken really bad - think you can handle it?", as if I just dropped out of the sky and had never seen a computer before.
But, after a few minutes, when I've whipped out my 16GB USB drive, stuffed it in the server, then connect my laptop to their LAN, and without asking a soul manage to log into their administrator accounts, they tend to get real quiet real fast. You hear muffled voices muttering "How'd she do that? - YOU don't know how to do that..."
In the end, I have fixed what no man there could, and I have struck a blow for all the women geeks of the world. We may not be gorgeous, we may not wear expensive clothes or drive fancy cars - but if we wanted to, we could - on YOUR bank account! (hehehe)
And, of course, being the family geekina (that's a female geek, BTW), it is my job to maintain anything and everything that has a keyboard, keypad or computer chip in it. I even had one relative tell me "I read about all of these Internet Appliances - does that mean you can upgrade my kitchen TV so I can get to AOL?" (Yes, this REALLY did happen. No kidding.)
After a long facepalm and head shaking, I just walked away on that one. But every PC that crashes, or gets a virus, or throws a hard drive becomes my problem. And then they get miffed when you tell them that their 8 year old Gateway with 128MB of RAM and 20GB disk running a 800Mhz CPU just cannot be upgraded from Windows ME to run Windows 7.
It is a thankless job. And you can't charge your family for the work - which is why I'm trying to fill my time with paying clients. I feel your pain, EagleRock, I really do.
As for the burning, itching and nagging question of "when will I finish the next chapter", my plan is to do it this weekend. This is actually the first real "quiet" weekend I've had since New Years, and I look forward to relaxing a little, catching up on som B/P'ing, and finishing this chapter (I have 4 pages written so far).
And.. I think once I finish the ENTIRE story (no idea when that will be) I'll toss a link to it on the Writing Forums. If they have any writing contests, I might just throw in a few of my own, just for lulz.
Well, time to get back to work. Glad to see some old, familiar faces back in the barracks. Just like old times - minus the police escort!
*Salutes*
