I'm sorry to hear that, TheThing. However, let me give a small bit of advice from someone that's been there, done that. I didn't get to go to my school of choice, either. I got into the school, but without any form of scholarships, which I would've needed to afford it. I actually ended up going to a tour of a local state school, William Paterson University. I took the tour on Admission Day, where they gave admission results that day, as well as waived the fee. After a tour of the campus, I came back to the admissions office where I was told I was not only accepted, but would be considered a valuable asset to the college if I joined. So, I ended up getting a full scholarship plus an additional scholarship for books/supplies. I ended up going to WPU instead of all of the other schools I was looking at.
WPU is by no means a highly-regarded college, not even close to the likes of The College of New Jersey or even Rutgers University. However, at that school, I did so many things above and beyond what I learned in my major:
- Took up a part-time job as a system admin in the CS department that eventually led me to going into the business I'm in now
- Found myself in a camaraderie of students in the CS department I would never have found elsewhere
- Joined multiple singing groups that eventually elevated my ability to sing higher than it ever was
- Studied under professors that changed my life for the better in one way or another
- Met the closest friends I have in my life
- And, finally, met my wife.
Not only that, but I eventually was able to get an assistantship from WPU that paid for a graduate degree. So, I went into WPU expecting to learn how to become a programmer, and I ended up with two degrees, with more knowledge than I expected to ever learn, and with my soul mate.
Point is, things happen for a reason. If I told you Willy P would be the college to give me all of that when I was 17, I would've laughed in your face. But I learned that the name of the college doesn't give you an education, nor is it the quality of the school...it's what you put into it that counts. I'm sure you'll get into a great school that will be perfect for you, and I'm sure you'll get an even greater education for it.
Also, another secret: after your get first job, people barely notice what college you go to, unless they happened to go to the same college you did. :-)
So, cheer up, keep at it, and I'm sure you'll do just fine. :-)
