Spam preventing spammers? 2005-09-04 11:48:08

Forums have three types of users that's relevant to how the forum is runned; Ordinary members, moderators and administrators.

We will look further at those two groups; Members, they have no powers than the ability to post, moderators, they can post but also lock, delete and ban.

However, the reason for a ban is mostly because the member spam.

A moderator is then suposed to ban the member because he/she is spamming, but some moderators join the spamfest.

That's my point. Spam is disliked whether it comes from a moderator, administrator or an ordinary member.

There are some people on this forum who actually would like to see moderators let the rules prevail instead of showing that they are able to break the rules too without getting banned.

I am not trying to piss you off, I'm just informing you that there are people who believe that the main reason to have moderators is to enforce the rules, not to give them the possibility to skip them.

Sure, all moderators ain't spamming ofcourse. You who don't do it know that by yourself too.

So to inform, some of you have gone too far. It would be nice to see some order again.

Regards, Andersson.

The member could also say "N---- please" or AN ALL CAPS POST or "Ozcar, go back to Mexico" which are all not spam but would probably result in a ban.

Response to Spam preventing spammers? 2005-09-04 12:08:05

The mods do need to set a good example to the new users. If they see people of authority posing spam, it becomes acceptable for them. Like if you caught your parents smoking weed, you would expect to be able to smoke weed...

Jesus. Jesus-fucking-Christ.

Dear Shirley, last time I checked, most people were still visiting these forums because they provided some form of entertainment, whether that be via "spam" or otherwise. Come on, lighten up. It's fun to let loose the hounds of high jinks every so often. I'd rather have a moderation team that was capable of kicking back and looking at the lighter side of things, than one enforcing the rules with an iron determination.

So what, a few of the mods spam. Big deal. Big fucking deal, they aren't commiting a cardinal sin, only taking the time to turn the seriousness down a notch, which at times, I can be seriously thankful for. I understand we don't want anarchy to rule, but come on, a few topics here and there with slightly relaxed rules can provide a veritable whale of a time.

But it's indefensible that moderators spam.

And as some of you say, "there wouldn't be any entertainment or threads to post in othervise", well I got to say that the most entertaining threads ain't those that are spam and if there wouldn't be any threads if the moderators banned/locked accordingly to the rules isn't true.

Othervise, you could find a reason to lock all threads and ban all members.

I see, you want to stop people from having any fun at all. If that's really what you consider spam, NG would quickly turn very boring.

Look, I haven't been here for that long, but I've read some old topics to see what it was like in the past, before there were any moderators or when their amount was very limited. What you've just shown is very tame, in comparison with people constantly typing in all-CAPS, making very incoherent posts, using racial slurs, and spamming Goatse images, thus ruining what potentially could have been very intelligent and interesting conversations.

And you're complaining about people JUST HAVING FUN.

Incorrect. Each post links to a thread that have a very obvious spam post.

However, even though they ain't the correct definition of spam, each one of these posts would give a new member a ban with the reason posting in a spam thread.

And you're complaining about people JUST HAVING FUN.

Look at the post about yours.

Precisely.

It's not like they're advocating the use of full-blown spam; up to but not excluding indecent imagery, one word posts and gratuitous insults and the likes. Not at all. All that's happening is that they're allowing people to express themselves in a less than serious manner.

Would you prefer it if every video games topic was a pseudo-political discussion based on the the ups and downs of the industry along with pulses and fluxes in certain sectors of the market ?

Precilla, listen up, not every topic has to be an essay, nor does it have to be extremely intellectual in nature. I hate to break it to you, but the only reason I continue to visit these forums, is that they allow me to let loose. If I were posting every post with severe caution, in fear off getting my metaphorical balls handed to me on a plate by some fire-brand mod with a chip on their shoulder, I'd hit the road, Jack.

Mr. Andersson(lol Matrix reference),

You make a very good point. However you must have realised that people range anywhere from cynical to smartass. And when given the opportunity to give their input, they will abuse the privilege. But there are those out there like myself, that respect themselves enough not to bring themselves down to the level of pointlessness.

Spam is not the devil. Mods are here to keep it under control, not suck the life out of the forums.

You seem to forget that all moderators are different, and have different ways of interpreting/enforcing the rules.

T

:\ Come ON.

h

You obviously have no sense of humor, or you don't remember 'cool points.'

o

The joke was understood by several moderators and regulars. Sounds more like you didn't get the joke, and automatically deemed it 'spam.'

s

That....doesn't even come close to spam.

e

:\ Again. Lighten up a little. This BBS is supposed to be fun. It seems as though if you don't find something funny, you just think it's spam.

But the rules say that parody topics, unless funny, will be locked, so are kind of spam. If he doesnt find them funny, then it makes sense he would consider them spam.

Actually, if you checked the links I gave, there are some posts made by moderators in that manner if they didn't delete them ofcourse.

All that's happening is that they're allowing people to express themselves in a less than serious manner.

Do you seriously think that I write my posts with caution and sits and think through what I'm going to say?

I'm making posts that ain't serious and proper all the time.

I'm writing my posts just as I would say in real life too.

You mix up funny jokes/posts with spam.

At 9/4/05 12:50 PM, Maus wrote: You seem to forget that all moderators are different, and have different ways of interpreting/enforcing the rules.

Well, I'm aware of that, and I mentioned it in a way in the first post. However, none of those threads are even locked. Which means, some of them haven't been enforced.

\ Again. Lighten up a little. This BBS is supposed to be fun. It seems as though if you don't find something funny, you just think it's spam.

Nope, remember, the Clubs & Crews have made fine without spam.

Those threads was found in a very short time, not even good examples. But there is a line between jokes that could only be understood by acouple of people and threads that would get a new member a ban because of spam.

By the way, I understood the "jokes".

If you would like to, I could translate the posts being made in that club. Anyways, as I'm the leader which takes care of the "moderating" part, which means that I explain or guidelines, notify moderators and so on, that thread is without violations.
