Yeah. Ngl I mostly just do it out of boredom -- but part of the drive is watching all these tracks, some from like 2007 even, all go with no votes and no reviews. That's no way to keep people around the site. Ya feel? But I often lose motivation to review if I'm not reminded. So I made a resolution to, for the next week, do 2 reviews for every 1 review someone gets me, or 20 for anybody that signs up to that referral link and confirms email. Least I can do for somebody willing to help me pay my bills, even 10 cents at a time. If it goes well and people like it, I might make it a monthly thing.

Yeah its a good start with 2 a day, audio is kind of tricky at times even if one is not music experienced but still its good for the artist to see positive and suggestions about there work, at the same time will increase there activity to get better and bring us even more great stuff.

I'm thinking of something along the lines of a review crew with monthly or bi-monthly events, like the R4R week I'm doing (and you've joined), discussions, and themed challenges. There are a couple others who have expressed interest in a plain review club too. I've decided if a couple more people jump on the bandwagon, may as well make a thread in C&C and @ everyone. :)

Well yes there was a few and this dates back to from when I myself had a group based in my blog but then also when a lot of us went over to retrograde and I was the one who had one there but there was a few here or there in the forums ofcourse it was not called clubs in crews back then I don't think.

But if you guys can make it work then all the more power to you, My advice is that bringing more quality into the reviews is very key, anyone can write one line junk even I will be the first to tell you I wrote a few of these but, I enjoy writing and theres always that point in writing better, writing more quality but most of all writing a review to help the artist see points or little things that may or may not help there direction in improving something.

Hmm yeah I remember something about that, wonder if I was gone more than 2-3 months those years, whatever it was something kept killing my motivation a bit... good call with that, though. I remember getting kicked out earlier as soon as I went off.

Review for Review in the Audio forum is a good example of how keeping the review community going can work. I feel the RRC could be revived overall but it really, really needs people who actually care about reviewing and not people just looking to boost their review count with as little thought as possible.

At the same time though, I feel like the reason there weren't so many reviewers there is partly because the ones who were often put a LOT of effort into their reviews. The pressure was high to always deliver quality feedback, even when there wasn't all that much to say. IMO it doesn't matter as much how long a review is as what int contributes, and short reviews from a lot of people are always appreciated, even if they're more praise than feedback. The Review Request club was about more than just encouragement, but do think that's a part of what made it not-as-easy for everyone to get into.

Ah, don't remember seeing the one on your blog, guess it was around the time when I wasn't so active, but RG, yeah, those were the days! The Clubs & Crews forum has always been called that hasn't it? Topics in other ones too though? Gotta dig around a bit; see what I've been missing...

For sure! Review lengths may vary a bit, but getting good feedback across is key, second to plain encouragement and acknowledgement. Better a short review than no review, but the more input the better whenever there's room for that. Do love writing too.

Well we don't need to write a book, but as I have been reviewing again as of late and have really got the feel again for it, I have come across many reviews some older some newer and they are basicly 3 word lines I know those of us who have been reviewing on the top of these lists can always put some effort in such as myself.

A little about me, now I am not the best reviewer by any means, but I have reviewed a few in my time here on newgrounds, and have learned alot over the past 10 years, my review style has changed over the years as i have seen the site grow and change, I try and write atleast a good paragragh on the content i am reviewing, i Try and give as much tips and points as possble without having to make a book out of it, you dont need to write a book of a review, but it shouldnt be a couple of lines either, but we are all guilty of that at some point, The point is you do learn and get better as time goes on, So remember if you like to review or are just a casual reviewer, give helpful tips, where you see it needed for improving on.

Before the tips be sure to read the FAQ on the review guidlines and rules that newgrounds has established for us to follow, These rules have been put up so that we dont scare off artists, but so that maybe they can learn a few things maybe its something they didnt see before, maybe its something they can improve on, But the most important thing we as reviewers can help with is, the little things that may improve on something from the content, There are alot of New users all the time, so there first submissions are at times iffy, so if we can point out a few helpful tips, there time here on newgrounds should be a more pleasent one not just for them, but for everyone who watches or plays there submissions.

In a Review it is always good to comment on what parts you enjoyed but dont forget try and comment on things and ways they can improve, maybe give them a new idea of how a scene could have gone, but dont take away from there own ideas they are trying to present, Maybe its a color that could really bringout a backround, or maybe they left a few spots blank, give the artist ideas on how the Art could be presented in a much better way so that they do get better results.

Now sometimes we cant always enjoy everything we see, but that doesnt mean we need to embarase the artist, or say how bad it is, instead think of a way to suggest improving on those points, such as a "STICK MAN" while that may be the the best they know how to do at the time, suggest ways of how they can create a more character designed character, or even suggest other flash works that show how to design characters, animation and sofourth,

Now what is a good or a bad review, ofcourse a very negitive review towards the auther or there work is not wanted by newgrounds, So Try not to go down that rout, Like my mother always said, if you have nothing good to say dont say it at all lol, But if there is truly something that bothers you about the flash art and or audio try and suggest how it could be better suggest ways they could do things differant, or a little touch up here and there, by giving new and existing ideas, we may inspire the artists to improve and eventually get better, and thats the main goal of helping someone.

#1 Have a Helpful and Respectful attitude.

#2 Watch, Listen, Read, And look at everything you are going to review in its entirety

#3 Take your time with each review and each content you are reviewing, Dont Rush, Rushing only causes errors and besides you want to give as much tips and help as possible rushing will just make for a sloppy review, and probably wont get everything across to the artist at hand.

#4 Pay close attention to story, theme, Plot, Exposition, Narration, Characters, Dialogue, as for audio it would be all instraments, all sounds, Vocals, ending, loop gap, backround songs, and so on, as for ART, everything from is it an Action scene, characters, backrounds, color use, orginality, style and so on, As for Littature, would be very simular to above for flash.

#5 Expect Criticism from your reviews especially if you were abit on the bolder side, aswell as giving a lower score.

#6 If giving a lower score also back it up with ways to improve, with good suggestions.

#7 Enjoy reviewing, like i do? then do enjoy it enjoy it because it also is helping someone else, enjoy writing reviews in a helpful way.

And here is an actual list update from 2004 from Retrogade the rewards was forum money that people earned for each post, so there was a lot of it for every review aswell.

Well we don't need to write a book, but as I have been reviewing again as of late and have really got the feel again for it, I have come across many reviews some older some newer and they are basicly 3 word lines I know those of us who have been reviewing on the top of these lists can always put some effort in such as myself.

Yeah it does happen, seems review length wavers depending on submission, or type, or relation to author. Sometimes its more comment than review - which it feels like the culture here is sometimes heading towards entirely. Gotta not fall for the new fad. Honestly though the less you can write whilst still conveying the intended feedback the better, it's like that classic Hemingway quote on how he was planning to write a postcard but just had time to write a letter, consensus being: it takes a lot of extra effort to formulate a message well, and convey the essentials rather than ramble .

Don't mean to imply shorter reviews are preferable over longer ones - it's great when there really is a lot of feedback to give, and it's commendable to always write so much, but I feel like when a balance can be struck between the two it's just perfect. That and it takes time to write one incredibly in-depth review, whereas you can give a larger amount of artists a little feedback or encouragement each within that same time frame, without feeling pressured by providing anything perfect. Reviewing should be fun, first and foremost, a reaction and reflection over submissions you enjoy more than a chore, as I see it. Well, just trying to justify the potential good with short writing here I guess. XD A review is really only useless if there's no sincerity behind it, IMO. Casual reviewing is probably the style I'm going for come to think of it...

Anyways here is something I wrote in 2006 it was a guid I was using for other reviewers in a club we had but its kind of interesting I suppose lol

Also good read there. Brings up some details I feel like I forget to take note of lately, reviewing too much and moving away from the essentials of what I should be looking for... good note on not taking away from the authors own ideas too.

Oh man, looks like this was before I started getting active there. :) Any chance you have the whole archive of these? Newer ones too? Would be really interesting to browse through.

If there's any other similar memorabilia you might have stashed away I'm always interested btw, RG doesn't seem to be indexed in the Wayback Machine at all so these things are pretty hard to come by now.

Yeah, I'm kinda in the middle. If I don't particularly enjoy a piece and the artist doesn't seem serious, I'm not gonna leave much but a comment. Or if there's not much to say positive or negative, same. I try to say at least one thing I like or dislike; it's easier to digest a short critique.

That said, if you produce music, you can also drop in a teaching moment or recommend tutorials. This has really helped me get out of a producing rut, and it's literally the best thing a reviewer can do for me.
