I decorated my room in lovingly garish colours, I help around the house and pay my way, while maintaining a respectable job.

Hmm... not really how I look at it. Then again, the money I would be 'pouring down the cludgey' is not actually money I earned myself. Perhaps I would look at it differently once I get a decent job and earn my own money.

But when I'm done studying and get a job I'll probably look for a house anyway. I expect that I will earn enough and my gf probably already has a job at that point.

I don't know how bad these 'family problems' are you're talking about. If they are really getting in your way I would say that even getting an apartment would be a good thing to do.
