I thought it wasn't bad. But with all the I's and We's replaced by Kevin Bacon, it became quite annoying to read through topics after a while.

I don't know - the story threads with the Kevin Bacon substitute turned most of them into comedies. Especially the first person tales.

PAVEMENT FAIL's bad enough, but pavement fail on the track where the biggest race of each and every year takes place every winter? Jeeeez.... ;_;

I didn't mind too much, as I managed to see Dale Jr. finish second, so we can just carry on and see that he's having a lot better a season than last year. The spotlight wasn't on him as much, with the Danica Patrick circus running around the Nationwide series.

Eng. Lit. Rantings have taken Coop to post 2. Great times!

I dunno about over there, but here there are lots of school districts where the teachers have little control over the syllabus.... just because a teacher won't (can't) change it doesn't mean he or she wouldn't like to... sometimes.

Oh no, I was very friendly with my English teachers (I still see them in town from time to time and am still as friendly to them) and was told that they had the option of about 10 texts, of which we were required to study at least 2. We did Lord of the Flies and Henry V, before touching on Gulliver's Travels for about a month.

Couple that with the WWI poetry and the fact that we studied Romeo & Juliet in the year before the 2 year final course and I was getting peeved with boring texts that were very hard to read.

At 3/27/10 06:00 AM, Coop83 wrote: Oh for the opportunity to study Dickens. At least we could have related more to that, since he was only about 160-150 years removed from us. Shakespeare is some 400 years before we learned it, so we suffered from the fact that the language has changed an incredible amount.
Damned English language... changing too fast lately for my tastes. BRING BACK CHAUCER!

The Canterbury Tales is one of the texts that we would have studied "but we ran out of time", much to my frustration.

I can and I will blame the teachers. They have their favourites from within the syllabus and they persistently picked them, as opposed to ones that they viewed as more of a challenge.
Fucking close minded hypocrites!
Oh wait, are you saying they had a wide range of books they could have covered in a year, but they tend to choose the same ones, basically? If they have leeway like that and don't use it to teach a variety of lit, then that kinda sucks, yes.

Invariably, they choose Shakespeare. Talking to other kids in the school told us that. Every child is required to study Shakespeare, according to my school. My English teachers said that it's not a requirement and that the department of English chooses which texts that children will study.

Working through Romeo & Juliet thrice (to labour a point) during my school life, Hamlet, Macbeth and Henry V all added up to one disgruntled pupil that actually tried to do something about it.

At 3/28/10 04:09 AM, Coop83 wrote: The solution was to suggest other authors that you haven't read. Horror is a difficult genre that people don't usually want to study, as is fantasy. If Tolkien weren't fantasy, I could practically guarantee that English schools would study him as a part of their English Literature courses, but the education system seems to be against children using their imagination.
I took an entire class in Tolkein at college (from the same teacher who taught an entire class of Arthurian legend lit)... granted, it was college, but still...

In any event, MOAR TOLKIEN IN HIGH SCHOOL ENGLISH CLASSES would be nice indeed. Make it happen, world!

Exactly. There are better authors than Shakespeare. I've proven time and again to former teachers accosted in the street that I've diversified my library (Pratchett, Clavell, McCaffrey, Iggulden, Ludlum, Asimov, Grisham, Crichton, to name but a few) and they still insist upon teaching Shakespeare ad nauseum.

Hence why studying not only Shakespeare, but Romeo and Juliet 3 times through my education has left me somewhat jaded.

I don't think I'd have been so annoyed if I'd studied different works of Shakespeare.
I have never read Romeo and Juliet and I have a B.A. in English Lit. #;-}>

Show off. You've not missed much :P

Even better! Red Diamond Dragon Club... Marc M's finest work. God, I wish he'd make a sequel to it... some of his recent works (in the past 2-3 years, I mean) have come close to FEELING like sequels, but none have been direct sequels...

Yeah, I would love to see that crew turned into a series but I guess that isn't really his style.

It just has a certain ring to it more so than Elite Guard Supreme Commander Gfox.

Which two do you mean, BTW? I didn't read the entire convo about Dickens, so I'm not sure if you specified in another post... I think I liked Tale of Two Cities most, but the only other Dickens I remember reading 100% was Great Expectations. I never read (all of) Oliver Twist, but know it well enough from excerpts + the movie.

Oh, I was just complaining about Charles Dickens. I'm not even sure if Coop even read his works, I'm sure he has. I think he is overrated.

I mostly read King Lear, Othello, Midsummer Night's Dream, Merchant of Venice, The Tempest, and another half dozen I don't feel like thinking hard enough about to rattle off right now... but anyway, King Lear and Othello I read at least 2-3 times over the course of high school and college together.

I've never read King Lear in HS or College but I did afterwards at my leisure and I really enjoyed it (not to mention I saw Akira Kurosawa's adaption of it, Ran). I really wish someone would have taught that one as I can try to understand it in more depth.

I suppose I had fairly non-traditional Shakespeare courses in both high school (half of one year we did a lot of Shakespeare) and college (only took one dedicated Shakespeare course, but there was at least 1 or 2 others that featured SOME Shakespeare as well), since I got to avoid (for the most part) the "big ones" and read the lesser-reads instead.

I think my Freshman year in HS I did more of the well know Shakespeare works and then in my Senior year I did more of the minor ones. I didn't really learn much Shakespeare in college since I earned a Native American Studies Minor and he didn't really write about Natives. :P

Maybe not, but I was lucky to have good English teachers throughout my education in Texas, Japan, Pennsylvania, and then Texas again.... The stories you guys are telling in here make me sadpanda, though, even if I can't personally relate. ;_;

Japan? Did you go to a DoDDS school too? I lived in Japan through my 5th-8th grades. Military Family, you know.

Absolutely insane. I can't believe you're only ranked #64 with such stats.

The ranks are rough as hell now. I remember when ramagi had that much B/P when I was new to this site and now we have 63 more users with that amount. Heh, funny that I once wanted to aim for the top spot. If I didn't retire from B/P'ing, I'd probably be #6 right now but I'm much happier with my 7's. :)

That's why it is not the same. You don't have anything physical. I can be sure that I can play the games I bought in 20 years from now (well, provided the hardware doesn't break, of course), but with Steam you can't be sure. What if they shut down their servers?

Yeah, it was Schumacher's this time :P

Still, a good race for the first two thirds of it, but the tyres are so easy to manage now that they only need 1 stop to do the whole race. Smaller fuel tanks mean more pit stops and therefore closer racing, due to tactics. The FIA should specify the size of the tanks for each race. Slower circuits, like Monaco should have smaller tanks, to get less fuel in and therefore 2 stops minimum

Also, full course cautions for race incidents like accidents, that don't take off the race distance. Red flag if necessary. That's why NASCAR works, because they run so many laps!

Ooh, that's a tough call. But here's a few suggestions:

I really can't separate these, as I've watched so many flash over the years. Yes, Bitey of Brackenwood was legendary in how advanced it was, but it hasn't got much better since then. Dashkin wasn't bad, but it's nothing that makes me think "you've upped the bar massively again, Adam." Bunnykill makes me feel that at present, since it's taken the Madness concept and advanced it with smooth, awesome animation.

Well you aren't really judging the entire series when you pick the overall number one. I agree that Adam's decision to make Bitye have some sort of backstory in Dashkin was really a poor one, but his works are still outstanding and beyond almost everyone on this site.

Bunnykill makes me feel that at present, since it's taken the Madness concept and advanced it with smooth, awesome animation.

Now there is a great series. I guess if I had to make some pick it would be these:
