Well I did some searching gfox and I'll go you one better. She posted a screenie when she reached 5,000 posts on Feb 12th, 2005. Now it's 3 months later and she's sitting at 9,281 posts. That means she made 4,281 posts in only 90 days. I'd say that's a bit excessive wouldn't you?
Her burst of posting started prior to that 5000 postcount, but yes... that's an effective way of pinpointing exact progress. Quite impressive, certainly... perhaps excessive as well.
But to be fair, a lot of her posts are lock messages, and she does a TON of modding compared to most current active mods. Believe it or not, the admins WANT us to always leave a post prior to locking threads so people can't complain no reason was given prior to teh lockage. I'm not saying that explains ALL of her posting spree in the past few months, but it does explain part of it.
What do you mean by "like it's another freakin' stat," Recon? It IS another freakin' stat. O_o
It should be treated as a form of communication first and foremost in my opinion.
Posts themselves should? Well, of course. But postcount is just a number. It reflects the number of posts you've made and nothing else. Not their quality, not the time that you spent making them, nor the size of each post, or anything else.
If those things were factored in, my postcount would be so much more impressive than it already is. #;-}>
In any event, of course the main reason to post is to communicate.
The main reason to review is ALSO to communicate, but more specifically with flash authors and the fans/fellow viewers of their flashes.
Still, reviewcount is a stat that many of us enjoy.
It's simply inescapable... many of the things we do on NG have stats associated with them. There are a few options:
1) Just do what you enjoy doing, and don't care about the stats. This is what people like Stuporman do (just post, don't worry about exp or b/p... and don't really care about their postcount or anything else).
2) Enjoy both what you do on NG AND the numbers that come with it. That would be me. And most of us here on Wi/Ht?, after all. #;-}>
3) Crave nothing but numbers. Posting and reviewing are nothing but means to accomplishing number-boosting ends... b/p and exp don't mean anything about you contributing to how the portal is graded and run, but just serve to boost your ego as well.
I don't LOVE that third category, and I can't personally relate to the first category, but it takes all kinds, yanno? Let's just be happy we're the sane medium (Good ol' #2 in the above list).
And in any event... people were obsessing about postcount long before I made the pentalist in November 2003.
Well her average posts per day before the pentalist was introduced on November 27th, 2003 was around 3. I jumped ahead about one hundred pages and amazingly her post count shot up to 50 per day. That's a very significant change. I wonder what her motivation was after all that time.
Yes, but from November 2003 until December 2004, her postsperday didn't jump hardly at all. It wasn't until 2005 that she began posting like mad. Most of the time since then has been when she's a mod. I think it's quite simple: ramagi's being a BBS mod has encouraged her to post more. Just like her being a review mod previous to that encouraged her to review quite a lot and to review ban quite a lot (she's probably banned more people than me plus almost all of the other review mods put together... excepting Stormwarden and TheJoe).
What I'm saying is that the pentalist can't have been a motivation at first. Maybe eventually (like this year, along with the mod status) it kicked in that way, but it wasn't back in 2003-2004.
So please don't blame my list for the spammage of teh BBS. ;_;
Sorry if that's the impression you got from my post gfox. I think the pentalist is great. I've been hitting the fan net button and put the link back in my sig. What really bothers me is when ramagi continually makes 2 pages of posts that for the most part are short and redundant yet when the Wi/Ht? Lounge manages to accomplish the exact same thing she rolls by and says "It's getting too chatty in here." WTF?? Hyprocrisy at it's finest.
I know you enjoy it, man, but it sounded like you wanted me to remove postcount from the stats it covers.
I think that by requiring not just one but TWO stats over 10,000, most of the problems associated with people perhaps being tempted to spam their way onto the pentalist with nothing but BBS posts alone... are now gone. It's simply impossible to gain list entry that way anymore.
Also, prior to me making that change, there weren't THAT many people routinely making the pentalist due to posts alone, anyway. I think a lot of the super-heavy posters, including those that have real hard-ons for the postcount stat... mostly dwell on General, anyway.
You don't seem them in Wi/Ht? that much anymore. When was the last time ZeroAsALimit posted here? Never, AFAIK.
I think the postcount-obsession reflects itself simply in people posting and looking at their count next to their posts or in their profiles. They clearly don't need a top BBS posters list to encourage it, nor do they need a spot on my pentalist to encourage it.
All that said, if ramagi really has been using the pentalist as an excuse/reason/motivation for posting way too much for some people's tastes, then I apologise. ;_;

I never plan on being a spammer so don't expect much from me.
That was posted the day you introduced the first pentalist. I got a laugh out of it.
Hm. Well, I'm sure she still doesn't consider herself one. But like I said earlier, one thing's for certain: her behaviour with regard to posting didn't change ANYtime soon after that post on 11/27/03 when the pentalist debuted. It happened wayyyyyyyyyyy afterwards.
Anyway, it's time for me to go back and catch up on everything since page 1101 or whatever. I finally have caught up on every single other topic on the forum, so it's time to catch up in here, as best I can.
Then it'll be time for pentalist updatingness.
