Sorry to double post, just a clarification: The ONLY thing I want to do with Ableton is DJ. I'm not looking for a DAW here, already happy with Logic Express 8

I have also bundled with my soundcard an Ableton something (dunno what version), never used it, somehow the interface is ugly and uneasy to me.
I'll try to install it and I'll tell you later how goes.
Found a new audio editor.
Expstudio - FREE
Expstudio Audio Editor is shipped in two different editions. The Free version contains all the functionality of the professional version but only can save audio files as Uncompressed WAV PCM (*.wav) and mp2 (*.mp2).
Have quite a big and comprehensive manual
My last find was quite a Cool Edit clone, right ?
Come on, look at the colors there...
Now another find (today I found that)
TEMPER - FREE
Temper, a MIDI+Audio sequencer with an emphasis on MIDI. Temper provides a straight-forward user interface that quickly guides you into advanced group operations and unique functionality such as decor and perform time, all tied together with an underlying shape concept for describing data transformation.
Well, actually is not really free, the licensing says:
"Temper is currently available as unrestricted trialware. There is no expiration, you can evaluate it for as long as you need, but if you decide to make it a part of your workflow you must buy a license, available here. Once you purchase a license, you can register when you next use the application."
Temper requires Windows XP SP2. An audio interface with an ASIO driver is required for VST and audio support. A three button mouse and MIDI keyboard or other controller is highly recommended.
XO Wave
A comprehensive Audio and Videosoftware platform which is great for location recording.
XO Wave is available as a free download for both Mac OS X and Linux.
Coming in 2 versions:
-XO Wave Free
A total of 3 built-in effects may be used in any one session. The Meter, Volume, and Aux Send effects are "free" -- they do not count against the 3-effect limit in XO Wave Free. For example, if you have a compressor one one track and an EQ on another, and both tracks have volumes and meters, that counts as two effects.
Free for personal use.
-XO Wave Pro
$95 US or equivalent
No limitations.

Nice finds, the TEMPER one looks pretty nice I'll have to try that.
Is FruityLoops still the best all-around music maker?

There is no such thing as "the best", is more like the personal taste and if a program fits to your needs.
For more fruity questions ask HERE.
I'm still rolling with the ableton live 8.0.4. I use that for making all my Midi, and running the various vst's that I get. Also i find the audio effects are quite interesting (Check the 16bit sound i get from the synth in my song deadhead lurker, its a built in sound on ableton! Just a lil tweekin involved).
But once ive made samples I actually build the structure of my songs, and master EQ everything in Sony Acid Pro, which is a great simple tool to use.
Recently just got cubase, struggling to get used to it though :(
I'd appreciate if the first post(s) could get updated with OS compatibility. Saves me time from going to every site just to see that it's Windows exclusive.
I just downloaded the fruity loops demo, I love it but I find it annoying that you can't save tracks you've made, does anyone have a solution, OR atleast know a program that records sound coming out of your speakers (like hyper cam but with sound), then I could keep the music I make.
The FL demo allows you to export your track as wav, mp3 or even MIDI file.
You just have to click on export button instead of save.
Very nice post, helpful for those that are ready to start in the audio world :D

All.
answer like the question
Depends of:
- what music you want to do
- what instruments you want to use (real or virtual)
- what kind of workflow you prefer
- what OS you use
- what you need (sequencer, multi tracker, sound editor)
On top of all of those there is personal preferences also...
Aviary Suite: Myna
Aviary is a suite of cheap flash based editors. Myna is their audio editor.
www.Aviary.com
They had several kinds of plans:
Basic: Free
Access to Beta apps and (I think) Myna
(I know that Myna will be available to everyone for sure, if it isn't already)
No control over watermarks
limited storage
Pro: $24.99 / year (right now. I'm not sure about the usual price)
Access to Alpha apps
Definitely has access to Myna.
unlimited storage
They also have a student program. Pricing for that varies.
Great !!! another Duplo Music maker, something that will get you banned for sure.

I have no clue what you mean by that...

Oh, ok. I did a search on it. I see what you mean.
Yeah, well, Aviary is working on something called "Roc" which, if I remember correctly, is going to be an audio synthesizer or music creator of some sort that would work in conjunction with Myna... Mind you, this is in the future.
(P.S. Sorry about the double post... Again. There seriously isn't an edit button?)
I'm suprised the list doesn't include Linux MultiMedia Studio (LMMS). I've started using it recently as an alternative. It works on both Linux and Windows and has a lot of flexibility. I'm still getting the hang of using it and documentation is a little patchy, but it has a good feature set.
Plus, it's free.
so im looking for a GOOD and FREE techno program for mac, any suggestions?
i used LMMS while i had a PC, but now, thats out of the question...
I took a course in school last year in which we used Cakewalk virtual instruments to make music. I loved that class I want to start making music at home. I don't have any MIDI equipment so I will just be using note placement in the programs and such with instruments included like in the Cakewalk Home Basic edition we used in class. What studio etc would you guys recommend me getting for making classic rock/techno as well as doing projects of randomness once in a while. Right now I am considering Cakewalk or Acid Pro or a different program up to $400-550, any tips/help will be appreciated.
Logic Pro/Express 9 now out! (Actually a little while ago) Same price though, but I don't really see any useful new features except for maybe the Flex time thing.
http://www.apple.com/logicstudio/
I still use 8 though. No need for another $200 upgrade...
BTW: My newest song is produced in Logic (as are any of my other ones)
My favorite setup is currently Ableton Live and/or Propellerheads Reason. Reason can't do VST but can be wired into Ableton Live which can use VST plugins.
i've been considering buying Sony Acid Music Studio, but i wanted to get a professional opinion first. is it a good program, or do i need to upgrade to the Pro version for it to really be worth anything? i mean, i know it wouldn't be as good if it wasn't the Pro version, but is the standard a decent alternative? i don't have a lot of cash, as i only work a part-time job, so i can't sink a lot into it. so any advice would be appreciated.
Stumbled over a new DAW on internuts:

- low latency using your own proprietary audio buffering system.
- can support up to 1000 tracks.
- arrangements within sequencer can be edited and changed during playback.
- support 4 sequencing modes.
- arpeggiator and chord toolbox provided
- time stretching and pitch shifting tools.
Anyone ever heard of this? The Tony-b Macine is actually a good music maker too. The problems are that you can't make anything more that three minutes, and you can't understand what the other people are saying sometimes.
Note: I do not own it, so don't ask me for anything about this website.
Tony-B Machine is a flash game that plays premade loops.
How can anyone still take those as music making programs ?
When you zapp on your TV you think that you were making those movies/ news bulletins/ nature reports...etc ?
stupidity of people AAARRRRGH !!!
Anyway, here are some news.
KOBLO is up again.
Koblo Studio is free, both to download and use.
Koblo has some unique online collaboration features, because it's connected to the Koblo cloud. You'll be able to work together with other musicians or band members across the planet, reviews changes, and grow your music in creative ways.
The website was down and the project looked like abandoned but today is up again.
