Can someone post an updated list? Some of the ones on the beginning list are outdated and gone.

Man, if anyone could link me to some software or programs that could help me loop audio for up to 5-6 minutes, that would be great.

That is quite an impressive list. But I'm a cheepskape (and broke) so I was wondering...in all your expert song writers/mixer oppinions which one of the FREE programs is the best for the songs you find in the audio portal. Personally I like classical, trance, rock, and video game music and any combination of the three so like a program that can make classical/trance first the other two second. The main reason I want it, beside trying, failing, and giving up on making a masterpiece, is I would like something that can remember simple tunes that I some time play while improvising on guitar (I'ld program the melody in while I still remember it = no live recording). Then I like to work off that adding and whatnot.

I know a free program like this is probably only in my "happy place" but if anyone could make a recommendation it would be highly appreciated. Thanks in advance to any responses.

I also want a FREE program. I have Anvil Studio, but want a program that has good sound quality. I have tried MadTracker, but I don't entirely like the feel of it.

If you are still interested in converting the .sib, you can send it to me at redhatcore@gmail.com and I'll convert it to MIDI format for you, which can then obviously be opened in any major sound editor.

I use Sonar 7 PE, Ableton Live 6/7 (depending on which computer I'm at), Adobe Audition 1.5 (not sure if that's been mentioned; it doesn't have great MIDI integration, but for manipulating audio files, its the best there is IMO) and Wavelab 5.

I don't think there's that much seperating the sequencers out there in terms of features; for me, its all about the plugins, but you buy those seperatly, anyway. I like the Tweakbench and Darkware plugins, and get good milage out of the Waves bundle my college kindly supplied for me (because no, they're not worth the price; get the PSP ones instead).

For beginners, I'd suggest either diving head-first into Ableton (version 6 should be pretty cheap by now and you aren't missing much from 7-8... well, actually, that's not true but if you don't know, yoiu won't miss it) or trying EMagix studio 6358 or whatever number they're on on (its 30 or something, I was exaggerating for comic effect, you see). If you're getting Reason, you HAVE to get version 4 or above, its that simple. The audio engine and sequencer had a HUGE re-working and it sounds infinitly better than ever before; in old versions, anything you made with it always had a particular 'Reason' sound to it.

IXI make some great stand-alone sound generation programs, things like Bidule are pretty good. I could go on forever about little indy programs I've used and liked, but its more fun to get out there and find them for yourself. One final thing; I would always recommend using software that supports VST because the number of free plugins out there is just incredible, and loads of them sound great.

Would anyone reccomend using Finale?

Anybody else vouch for this program? I currently own FL Studio, and have been looking to change things up, and I have some (little) cash saved up for a cheap alternative DAW. Renoise seems ideal for what I'm looking for. But... what's the workflow like? I've been to there website, and haven't found out much about it. Downloading demo when I get home.

Well, if you're just looking for something to record, remove white noise, and edit clips, I would go with Audacity. Not only is it free, but it comes with a lot of different built in tools and scripts.

Although, personally, my audio editor of choice is Edison! Although, it will set you back $100. I find it has way more advanced features that you would never get out of free software. Now... are all these features necessary...? Probably not lol, but tend to always get the better of things.

So if $100 seems like a bit much to get an advanced piece of recording software, I'd just stick with Audacity, which will do the job just fine.

Well, it will definitely be a change then. The tracker format is wayyy different from most DAWs. It's also slightly skewed toward sampling as opposed to synth-age, but if you've got the right plugins that won't be a problem.

I'd definitely recommend trying the demo. Don't be scared off by it, take the time to read some of the tutorials. It's a lot less confusing than it seems at first.
