If you're a guitar player/understand guitar tablature, there's a midi program called PowerTab that I use. I use it for all instruments except guitar and drums ('cause I can record with my real guitar and use a better quality drum machine for the drums). It's basic but you can make simple soundtracks pretty easily =)

As a result, GarageBand is one of the most powerful recording studio programs ever. As another result, it is a power hog. It comes free on every mac computer that you buy today. I took great care in listening on the radio and realized that all of the songs that I heard could theoretically have been made with GarageBand. Try it out. Apple may have it for download on their website but I don't think so.

Garageband isn't a power hog, it's ineffecient, logic pro 7 fixes that problem. Logic Pro is so fricking good it's amazing.

I made a thread about these articles, but it didnt last long, theyre both from the computer music website. this one is for cheap, freeware/sharware/donationware software for mac and pc. and this one is more about utilites for keeping your computer in tip top performance. which has a few decent mac programmes. I would advise to download asio4all, a nifty little programme which inserts an asio driver for any soundcard even which doesn't support it. its a cracking tool and free.

You'll need a vocoder for that - best bet would be to search google for freeware vocoders

I've used garage band, logic, and had the pleasure to spend 12 hours over the course of 4 weeks with a pro tools audio studio.

Garage Band is really weak. I will not lie about that. Logic is definately for the professional musician. It allows for more controlled sound effects, neater editing, and automations for effects on each track. (I love messing with pitch bend automation, it sounds so awesome!!! : D)

Pro Tools Audio is WTF!?!?!?!?!?! It's messed up, but once you get used to it, it is one of the most fantastic music programs ever. For the extreme professional.

My personal favorite is Logic, then Pro Tools, then Garage Band. From this thread, I found Psycle, and now I can use my VST's!!!

BTW, is there another program that I can get for free that can use VST's? (I recently bought a 600 VST collection from an anonymous website.)

Here's a good music program (for beginners, like me):

FlexiMusic Composer $20
This is a VERY good program for first-timers, like me. It comes with a lot of instruments and sounds and all you really have to do is arrange them. You can set the tempo and all that, of course. I've made some pretty good music with it. But, one thing I don't like, is this program can only export music to a .WAV file, so you'll have to convert it to .MP3.

And, I have a problem... whenever I convert my songs to .MP3, and try to submit them to NG, it says "Only files of .mp3 type are allowed." or something like that. Anyone know why?? Thanks.

I've been composing music for the past 4 years (school) and i'm looking for a computer program that will allow me to create the songs on the computer (For example, Not having to plug in my own equipment or use a mic).

I read through all the programs and most of the termonology made it hard for me to understand what each one does. Any idea which one I should use?

Find a good midi program. I use midi studio generation 5, but that's not free.

Does Midi mean that it hooks up to the computer? = \

For reason, I dont think you can record a mic or use midi.

Sounds to me like it is a huge synth with other synths inside.

I looked at it but never got into it, it was a bit scary with all the knobs and little things you can do.

Can I wire Reason to Cubase? or vise versa?

Response to Audio Software: Studios & Editors 2006-08-31 13:04:03

Logic owns everyone.

GB is very inefficient and it will eat up your CPU like crazy. But the sound quality is excellent. A lot of GB components form the basic foundation of the Logic instruments and effects, so GB is very nice.

I'd say if you've got a Mac, don't bother with Reason, because for the same price you can get something uberly more powerful and flexible (*ahem*Logic). If you're on PC, Reason is your best bet (maybe even ReWire it to something else, because it isn't the easiest program to use)

So if I had to put the software in order by my preference, I would say

MAC
Logic Pro 7
Logic Express 7
Reason 3
Pro Tools
Garage Band

PC
Reason 3
Cubase
Fruity Loops
Pro Tools

all u gotta do is get the LAME mp3 eencoder, or one of the others, and render it. If u want to put the song in another program just import the mp3's or whatever.

======================

I've actually used this software. It really is pretty decent. You just click a sample, open up the grid, and tab out what you want it to play. Take the track below the sample and select "Effect" and you have the option to load an effect to the above sample. Clicking the grid here tuns the effect on or off so you can add effects on the fly.

It's not the most complex software in the world but it's a good one to get you started if you're on a budget.

Which is more powerful and feature-full... Apple's Logic Pro 7 or Steinberg's all-new Cubase 4? I only want answers from people who have used/use both heavily.

some other studios.

E-jay(www.Ejay.com )$9.99-$19.99
you can combine existing loops with eachother and make a song out of it, or you can put your own loops in it, and then you can make a good song.(pretty easy to use)

Virtual D-jay (www.VirtualDJ.com )$299.00
it's a virtual mixing table(or whatever you call it) that lets you scratch and make loops out of songs, just like a real life mixing table(has hardware too, the hardware costs $250.00)

That's next to impossible, but if you have an electron microscope, and the power of most professional recording studios, and the speakers/headphones with the quality several hundred times better than normal human hearing, you can do it.
