Suggestions for a 'Stickied' topic

OK, so I want to gather some ideas together for a 'Stickied' post, like the one in the Flash forum. Rules and guidelines, maybe a resource list, and anything else that you think would be useful as a reference for audio newbs when they come in here asking the same annoying questions over and over again.

So... ideas?

I still plan on making a comprehensive FL tutorial, but I wont have enough time to make it until school's out this semester.

What about a fruityloops questions topic(or questions in general). People will post there in stead of making a new topic for every single question. A lot of other forums have this too and it really helps!

we should just get a whole list of every known audio program, and what each one does. synths, converters, etc.

all of it!

Some pointers about looping would be nice. I can just see that coming up often. :( And yes, links to where you can buy and/or download free trials of some audio producing software for people who are wanting to get started as well as any links to tutorials that they have. :)

That's exactly what I mean by Resource List. A full list of audio programs/creators/manipulators, preferably with links.
I only use a couple of programs personally (SoundForge and Samplitude), so if other people want to link software that they like/use/know of, then that would be extremely helpful. Otherwise I'll just have to spend a bit of time on Google.
I'm thinking of something like this:

Sound Editors - Best programs for editing single wav files
Audacity - free sound editor
Sound Forge - one of the best wav editors

Virtual Studios - Lay down and mix tracks
ACID Pro
Cubase

Loop/Track creation - build music from scratch, no instruments required.
Fruity Loops
But obviously with more headings, and more programs

This is going to show my bias, but maybe a stickied post specifically for voice acting? *coughs* Specifically to point the Newgrounds Voice Acting Club and roster *coughs* Yeeeeeeeeah.... >.> Or maybe included as a general "all you need for flash audio...." type sticky?

What about an audio approval thread? I think it's better to do it here than in general. Ofcourse I'm not going to make it, maybe one of the audio mods can?

there's no real need for an approval thread, since there are currently two or three Audio mods, and the pending list generally gets cleared every day or every other day.

Here's what I have for the top of the page... input/feedback is welcome

WHY AN AUDIO FORUM?

Newgrounds first opened the Audio Portal in 2003, and since then it has become an extremely popular part of the site, with around 10 new artists signing up to submit loops every day, and several hundred submissions from musicians each week. Since there was no formal place for audiophiles to discuss their art, liljim created the Audio Forum in April 2005.

The forum is a place where musicians from numerous different backgrounds can share their wisdom with other audio artists and users new to music. The emphasis is firmly on the creation of music, rather than listening and appreciation (particularly of popular music - threads relating to 'Your favourite song/band/guitar solo" will probably be deleted). Other than that, we ask you to abide by the standard BBS Rules, and remind you that discussion of software piracy in particular is forbidden on the NG forums.

Please also remember that the Audio Portal exists primarily as a resource for NG's Flash artists. It's OK to showcase your talent to an audience through Newgrounds, but if you can create killer 30-second loops, then you'll probably stand a better chance of your music being used in a Flash movie than if you submit full songs - purely for filesize reasons.

OK, so I'm going to leave this thread to knock around for a few days before I send a finalised version to James. It'll probably be a static page, and will require me to contact liljim each time it needs updating, so if anybody had suggestions, ideas, links, or whatever, that they feel should be added, then post away; it would be nice to get this as 'right' and useful as possible on the first attempt.

Also, I encourage those of you that specialise in certain software (eg. Reason, SoundForge, FruityLoops (I think Rage is going to cover that one)), Cubase) to create 'Basic Tutorial for: PROGRAM' topics. Hopefully we'll eventually have a decent collection of tutorial threads, which can be added to the Sticky. So, if you have teh skillz, get typing....

I'm sure a couple extra "NO DISCUSSION OF PIRACY" messages right around the software part of the sticky wouldn't hurt, nor would making the free software stick out slightly more than the non-free software.

Then if you could go into a little bit of detail as to what each category means, that would be nice too. Without actually downloading the programs, I don't know what exactly you mean by editors; is that just cropping MP3s? Maybe there are full-featured equalizers in there as well? Then I don't have the slightest clue what a refill is, or what plug-ins interact with.

Those of us who aren't so knowledgeable about audio software (yet) would certainly appreciate even small details like that.

and .wavs, yeah

Maybe there are full-featured equalizers in there as well?

Well I don't know about the others, but Sound Forge definitely allows EQing, as well as application of various effects (such as Noise Reduction/Reverb, etc) to a mono or stereo sound file.

Then I don't have the slightest clue what a refill is, or what plug-ins interact with.

me neither. That's why I need more people to post in here. I use analogue mostly, so I'm not hot on the MIDI side of things. Maybe I should leave it up to Rage to sort out the sticky...

Dammit... pipped at the post. Oh well.
I started to make a list of all the possible audio resources one could ever want. For the same idea as you guys. But it looks like the majority of the ones I thought of are done already... no wait... :)

You missed a few...

http://www.flashkit.com (Both SFX and Music)

Sound FX

http://www.a1freesoundeffects.com/

Next come the specific game music sites:

Nintendo

Sonic
http://www.sonicunited.com/music.php
http://www.planetdreamcast.com/sonic/listen/index.html
Doom
http://www.doomworld.com/music/

I actually think this is copied from one of your other threads ;)
I keep all these links in a notepad file on the desktop - adding to it all the time
Its a great idea, but I don't think the thread should be locked - it should be like the actionscript thread - after an initial announcement by Wade and the first few posts that would contain all the resources. This way we wont have to make another thread with all the ammendments and additions. Because lets face it - it takes time for the admin to do things they have enough on their plate already.

Hmm, also possibly an addition of music theory such as information on transpoing, time signatures, tempos etc.

I feel we should be allowed to have threads on listening and appreciation but only were it applies to the Audio Portal and it's artists. A thread on ParagonX9 (it's going to happen) should be allowed while one on Muse shouldn't.

Agree or disagree?

Yeah I do agree with you on that

Well I'm having second thoughts on how the sticky should be constructed. The list I currently have is pretty large, and it's just for Audio Software - by the time we start adding tutorials and SFX links, it's going to be huge. Since once it's up, it won't be possible to edit it easily, maybe we should create separate topics for subjects, something like this:

- Audio Software List
- Newbs Guide to Home Recording
- Theory Of Music
- SFX and Music links on the web (ie different's list)
- Tutorials (on- and off-site)
- Miscellaneous Audio Resources
- Audio Portal news & issues

And link them from the sticky. That way, if someone creates a tutorial thread for a certain program, they can add a link to it from the main 'Tutorials' thread; and if someone finds a great site for SFX, they can post it in the 'SFX and Music links on the web' topic

I dunno, I'm a sucker for referring people to resources that exist, rather than typing the same stuff out time and time again (comes from hearing the same n00b questions over and over and over again in the Flash forum).

Give me your opinions on this idea. If you agree that it makes sense, then I'll start a new thread with my Audio Software list, and maybe people could start searching the web for links to relevant tutorials, or even write tutorials themselves.
