Passion or Hobby?

Another random question I’ve been thinking about lately:

Would you consider art your passion or a hobby you just enjoy doing?

Personally, I feel like I’m somewhere in the middle. Like I’ve always enjoyed drawing and experimenting with different niches ever since I was young but I wouldn’t necessarily call it a passion. Mainly because if I do it for too long, it’ll just feel like a chore lol

For me, it's a hobby and it keeps me stimulated. I rather keep myself busy drawing than doom scrolling Youtube.( I still waste the same amount of time regardless).

I will never make a living out of it but it's one of the few things I can say I really enjoy very much.(maybe it's passion too?)

Wait...where do I sign?

Whoops! Must have selected it by accident lol

I'm also somewhere in between, but I see it more as a passion, since I almost always draw because I like to do it and express my imagination. I rarely do it because I'm bored.

I make art like it's a bodily function

Don't know, really... I have very little time and energy to put into it, so don't really get to be passionate about it, and spend too little time to hone it much. I can go for months without even doodling anything, not even a scribble on a piece of paper.

I take no responsibility for the above. It's your fault for reading it.

Response to Passion or Hobby? 2025-07-06 12:34:08

Both. I have passion for my hobbies and art is one if them. I don't get paid (nor really want to get currently) to make art so it isn't a job and instead is a hobby. If I don't have passion for the art it will look bad. So both.

Anything can start to feel like a chore when done too much no matter if it's monotonious or not.

I don't think passion vs hobby is a real dichotomy lol, if you have it as a hobby then it's clearly your passion to some degree by definition since otherwise you wouldn't be doing it for fun entirely of your own volition.

It's definitely a passion first for me though, there are times where I literally have to draw something or else whatever idea I am having will eat me from the inside. The rest of the time I don't have the energy to properly keep up with my art, but I'd still call it either my first or second hobby.

It's a hobby that I'm passionate about

Neither. And I don't do it for fun or money, either. It's more like... a religious reason, a divine urge to make a magnum opus? It has to have a "purpose" to it or I won't bother. (Even trolling/annoying people with "shitpost art" counts as a purpose, but that be a sideshow to the main course)

For decades I found myself extremely isolated from art communities because of this. I don't understand the other reasons to make art at all, and nobody understands my reasoning. I've had people figuratively spit on my work and say that "I don't care about it" or call me an asshole/that I think I'm "special", or that I wasn't worth even a dollar (when I never offered commissions) just because I said I didn't do it for fun and/or as a hobby.

It is unreal how much shit you'll get when you don't do something for a popular reason. Or maybe there are more people who do it for the same reason as I do than I think. But I don't even know what the "genre" is called, if any, so I can't go looking for such artists even if I wanted to.

After a year of being on here, I realized it’s a hobby for me. I draw a lot of characters, but not really any stories for them. And the fact that I don’t drawn too often (due to health issues) is also why I haven’t fully committed to it. I like to draw, but not every day, if you know that I mean.

I haven't felt like this since 2008

It both is and isn't a hobby since I do art as part of my job, but all the art you see from me here is done for free on my own time. I'm not overcome with passion for it, but it's where I dumped all my skill points. Might as well keep going with it.

I know this is in the art forum, but it’s a pretty general question so I’ll answer anyway about music (an art form, no?)

It started as a hobby, but now it absolutely is my passion. Probably the only thing I’ve ever felt passionate about, but what a wonderful feeling. I love music more than life and I want nothing more than to create beautiful music, from my soul for the world.

I think I've lost my mind and I love it

I actually don't think I would even be alive if it wasn't for art, so let's call it a passion

Hobby feels too reductive of a term to describe such a vital part of my life

For me it's just a hobby. I really like art, but not to the extend where I want to draw something every day.

The art portal and forum are stupidly named.

We should just call it the image or picture portal/forum.

Music making has definitely graduated to become a passion for me, but drawing is still just a hobby, I'd say.

In my opinion more of a passion than a hobby

I would probably say both. I draw because I like to draw but I also do it because it keeps me calm and in a good mood. And I just draw for fun. Not for money or anything else. I also do Holiday drawings and make people cards. A hand made card is better than a store bought one.

Response to Passion or Hobby? 2025-07-07 21:47:13

My passion is to draw. I wanna be able to get serious with my works and try putting as much effort as I can. I also developed a hobby of 3d modeling when I was introduced to modding in Bomb Rush Cyberfunk (it's a good game go play it).

In all honesty I find art as a passion of mine, not only it is a way that I can express ideas and thoughts more clearly then I can ever put to words but also alot of the things I draw are also connected to this, whether that be funny doodle of my guy or other guys it lets me show my love for things I find so AMAZING. I also find the craft of art very fascinating like both the different ways of making it and the reason why people make art (like a evolutionary sense).

Kind of both as of right now, I’m transferring to an art college this fall so I can’t take my art classes to become an animator, director or writer, maybe even voice actor. But for now it’s a hobby for me

For me, it's certainly a passion. Manga was and is a massive part of my life beyond just a simple interest and though I struggle to keep more than one hobby in my life due to the rush of adulting I still try to keep up with my absolute favourite influences. My interest has transcended just an admittedly nerdy wish to be draw like my idols and I feel like I'm coming into my own as a creator as my writing skills develop and I learn new skills on how to make amazing character designs - which designing characters is probably my most fulfilling hobby. I'd say I've designed maybe 100 characters, if not more - Though I only post my favourites or ones relevant to work I plan on sharing within a year.

Though I definitely have my weaknesses such as a lack of perspective / backgrounds for my character art and I can definitely use some more training for stuff like hands I definitely am a big advocate for my strengths and designing characters is always a cure for whenever I feel down. I don't care for being a famous comic artists but my long term goal is to make characters and comics for a living and amass a small cult following.
