Toon Boom removed perpetual licensing option

A few days ago, there was a sudden change with purchasing toon boom. You previously could buy a perpetual license for one single release and then pay to upgrade, but now subscription only (Though I've heard you can email sales team to get a perpetual license). Their reasoning was that it was too difficult to explain to users perpetual licensing, so they removed it. You guys going to stay with TB or move on? I'm against mandatory subscriptions for offline software, so I wouldn't use this even if I had unlimited funds to do whatever.

This may or may not have to do with a US company buying toonb boom and changing business model.

I'm really getting sick of how more software companies are trying to push for subscription services where they aren't necessary in the first place.

They have become adobe now. What is happening right now?

Currently working on a cartoon this summer. Stay tuned I guess. Heh.

Damn that sucks, I swear every good creative program is switching to subscription based payment models now. It's not like most artist are underpaid and are at risk of losing their jobs to AI or anything, clearly we have loads of money to spend!

On a related note, Opentoonz/Tahoma2D is basically a free version of Toon Boom so you can always switch to that. Plus they're both opensource so they can't switch to the sub model even if they wanted to.

Response to Toon Boom removed perpetual licensing option 2025-05-29 23:46:59

I don't really do subscription services. I'm kind of already doing that for insurance.

There is nothing morally wrong with piracy

Eh, I'm not surprise Toon Boom is going subscription mode only. I remember when Clip Studio Paint dropped free updates and now you have to pay a subscription model to receive new updates. CSP situation is not the 'worse' as you can still buy one time payment for CSP (no free updates), but it still suck. You kinda just got to accept or adapt to these situation as there is no winning with these companies. The only viable long term solution is using free open source (popular) art programs, or you can pirate the programs you like using but don't need to use the latest updates. I think Krita and Blender are the two popular free open source art programs that I think everyone should use. I hope one day those two programs I mention be the Lingua franca for art/animation/gamedev both in indie and mainstream studios. I've been seeing Blender slowly becoming that though Krita I can't say for sure yet.

If I can't flat-out buy the software, I don't pay for it.

Problem with pirating software from beyond 2007 is that DRM is very sophisticated nowadays. That's why the vast majority of the time I prefer free (open source) software.

I've never really thought about it but what happens if you do pay the subscribtion for Toon Boom (or any other software) and try to use it without internet? Let's say you are on vacation and don't have internet connection on your laptop. Does it still open?

The same thing that happens to every tech company if they find a modicum of success.

We need to return to treating piracy like fight club though.

That is, stop fucking talking about it.

See, I would be happy to give them a shot if not for the fact that I would take one look at the program's layout and just check out. It's really frustrating when my broke ass can't afford the actual programs used to make animations easily but your only affordable option is free source stuff that heavily rely on my dumb ass to program stuff too.

Response to Toon Boom removed perpetual licensing option 2025-05-30 16:34:41

Yeah, I saw it a couple of days ago.

It sucks.

It is/was one of the recomended ones qhen people askd for animation software.

Someone names CSP before, that switched to suscriptions for upgrades... of course I prefer just buying the entire program once, but seems like a reasonable middleground?

Well... I think I'll try with moho?... That one seems nice.

Yep. It's why I only buy software like Fruity Loops Studio. One and done.

They now hate us and want us to suffer physically and mentally.

I feel like we should just expect bad things to happen to good companies now.

OpenToonz

It's free and open-source.

I can also vouch for it's sister project, tahoma2d, which is a fork with enhancements. I like that one more.

May I recommend Krita?

Krita is primarily an image editing software though. Animation capabilities being secondary.

At least that used to be the case, have they improved upon it?

Painting, not image editing. Though in its early history it started as GIMP on the Qt toolkit.

There's a free, open-source alternative called LMMS. Can't speak much on it though because I haven't used it for more advanced stuff. But people praise it and it looks pretty much the same.

I'll tell you the truth. I paid for a yearly subscription for Harmony Advanced and I personally don't mind it. Though I feel like I'm going to get a lot of attacks for this. Apologies in advance, everyone.
