Why do people think just because they make a flash animation, they will get a frontpage

Recently I been working on the first animation for my account. It will indeed be my magnum opus, I just hope it will get slightly recognized when I release it.

To get a frontpage or an award, you need to actually but noticeable effort into it and I’ve seen animations made in flash after 2020 get frontpaged and awarded but it’s very rarely that you see a flash animation get frontpaged. But no matter what software you use, you have to put noticeable effort into your work to get recognition.

Nostalgia!

I've seen so many younger users on here acting like shitty low-effort Flash animation was the standard rewarded content back in the day, but it just wasn't. The few shitty Flashes that did get attention and rise to prominance stand out among the crowd because they were exceptionally shit and got attention against all odds because they had some small detail that made them funny, or they just slipped through the tight net of quality control which was a funny novelty in and of itself due to how rarely it happened. There was a lot of garbage, but the majority of stuff that got frontpaged years ago was insanely high quality for its time.

I don't know how or why this happens, but zoomers and generation alpha people seem to have this sort of faux-nostalgia for millenial and gen x aesthetics in general but they completely fail to grasp the context that came along with it so it just falls flat almost every single time. I'm not trying to shit on them or anything, but I'm really getting tired of the whole "Y2K/90's aesthetic" shit I see plastered everywhere online lately. I literally grew up in this era myself, but I have kids trying to tell me what it was like back then when they were barely conscious or not even born yet. It's tiring.

That said, maybe I'm just a miserable old prick and looking at shit through rose tinted glasses. Maybe everything was shit and I'm misremembering it due to being senile or something.

While I agree with you in principle, if I recall... people absolutely loved sprite mario doing drugs and swearing a lot back then. But yeah, this nostalgia trend of those who merely emulate but can't duplicate is getting tiring. I absolutely love flash 8 myself, but I want to strive to make something unique for myself.

I didn't really notice a trend with flash in particular. There always was and always will be a broader Monkey See Monkey Do mentality that assumes that as long as the subject and medium is the same as something popular, whatever they make deserves to be popular too (quality being conspicuously absent from the equation). To a certain point, and in the right mindset, imitation is how you learn and set standards for yourself. But if you only see it as a hack for getting attention, you're setting yourself up for disappointment.

I mean, mainly because it could happen. If it's a slow day and you made something mediocre there's a decent chance you could get a daily. Hell when SoupSquad was around we worked out a formula for the slowest day of the week to increase our chances lol.

Who's to say some kid making something shitty shouldn't get a daily? Maybe they need that little boost in order to feel this is worth it. Maybe that recognition helps them find a collaborator or mentor. But they shouldn't just *expect* it to happen, increase your skills every time and it's sure to happen eventually.

EDIT: If you're asking why they play the nostalgia factor by trying to make mid 2000s style stuff, because it works. It's the same reason people make content relating to new video game releases etc, it's a hype factor. Nostalgia works as well as newness sometimes.

Me too XD.

I guess most of people think that cause Newgrounds was a literal Flash website (before Unity WebGL & Java Apps (I GUESS)), and most of its current style reminds a bit of its Flash-era.

But yeah, theres nostalgia too.

I hope I don't come across as guilty of this... I make my stuff in Blender, which is pretty high end, but I like to keep things as simple as possible because I like to go for a campy art style reminiscent of things like Neko Sugar Girls and that old unauthorized Bugs Bunny parody ''Rabbit Habit'' cartoon or 3 AM Adult Swim experimental cartoons. It's not nostalgia baiting, it's just funny to make things really crappy as possible sometimes! There's a secret art to making it look like you didn't try at all.
