Hey! Back again for today's announcement of scores. No new entrants, so it's official, we will be rolling into round 2 with 12 competitors -- perfect!

Round 1 Results:

I was stunned at points listening to everyone's submissions, particularly your compositions and unique individuality. Usually, I'm used to listening to hundreds of submissions at a time. These, I thankfully had the opportunity to cherish. Let's see how everyone did!

Overall: Three-way tie. Congratulations to @anthonyragus, @g2961 and @ki1 for a 9/10!

Best production: Four-way tie, @anthonyragus, @g2961, @ki1, @ireadysucks with a swagging 9/10

Best mixing: @ki1 with a 9/10 in classic trance.

Best mastering: @g2961, 10/10. Those $3 headphones are putting in work!

Best style: @anthonyragus, @ireadysucks, 10/10. Both of your pieces were outstanding and ambitious!

Runners up: @monsanto64, @neonskiesofficial, 9 style and 9 mastering respectively, tied 7.5 overall. @monsanto64 also linked samples. Nice bonus!

Here are everyone's scores.

As you can see, we're probably gonna need a tie breaker next round. @TaintedLogic, would you be willing to do the honors? It will be a simple binary decision, either for tied head to heads or tracks tied for 5-6th place. If not, don't worry. I'll think of something!

One to two more votes, and the competitors' preference will be counted, replacing the first of three coin tosses with your choice of 1v1 victory (Angry react) or high-score victory (Heart eyes) respectively.

Remix assignments will be announced after a short break, on May 20th. The coin-toss will be final June 10th.

Additional discussion:

At 5/16/25 04:58 PM, 3manonMusic wrote:I just realized how f'ed up it would be if 17 people submitted and 16 people would go through to the first round loll

If we had an odd number of competitors, which I was hoping would not happen, my super secret last ditch plan was ... have one competitor compete against me. Only I would have to select something other than my last single for them to remix -- or they would have basically completed round 3 early lmao. XD

That would be super complicated for all involved. It might even change how many people advanced into round 3. We would have to opt for head to head for it to be fair for everyone, and a tie-breaker to judge that bracket.

Anyway, see you guys on the 20th with the remix brackets!

Damn it breaks my heart (over-exaggerating) seeing my mix so low. I hear from overall fans that this is the best mix from all of my tracks so far because of the thought behind when to highlight different instruments. After looking at your whole ass documentary of a review I do understand it a little more tho lol

Aha, don't be so hard on yourself! There is so, so much that goes into mixing. Arguably, it's the hardest thing to do, harder than mastering and composing in general. There's also so much misinformation on it, with amateur producers writing guide after guide on how they prefer doing it, and people outside of X or Y genre proclaiming their method universal.

Because of that, it's one of the hardest things to learn. I'm not even that great at it, myself, after two decades of learning (granted, I had hiatuses). My point, don't sweat it if you're not an absolute god at mixing, or if someone else is "better" at it than you.

This is one of the things I hate about scoring also. It highlights the feeling we get when we compare our work to that of others, when in reality, no one listens to our music that way -- comparing it to other pieces, I mean. We can only compare pieces to the sum of hundreds, maybe thousands of pieces we liked.

Reducing that perceived quality to a number is only necessary in situations like this, where we're forcing a comparison of technical quality, and it says nothing about whether the song is good or bad. Or the producer for that matter.

As for good vs. bad, think about what the individual numbers mean. 0 is ear-bleeding, maximally unpleasant, worse than silence. 5 is okay, still learning, some defects here and there. 10 is wow, the sky has opened and the angels sing, more than radio-ready, slap your grandma type stuff.

No one in this comp did badly, at all by that standard. If you're over a 5 in any category, you're doing well. :)

Hi. I don't know if this is still cool with you, but I would like to change the track that will be remixed (so not my submission, and it's score, because that would be cheating of course)

Reason being is I think this track is just overall has a way more consistent theme and is less progressive. That makes it less interesting from an arrangement standpoint, but it makes it more fun to remix and grants more of the chance to make your own interpretation on it! I had multiple people coming at me (without me asking) with a remix from this specific beat, so I think it'd do well in a contest like this

I'm happy to be a tiebreaker, yes! Have to get those judging juices flowing before the NGUAC/NGADM. ^_^ Please PM me with the timing/details.

Well, it's also past the deadline So even if you wanted to cheat, you can't! :P

That sounds fine, in fact, if anyone else would like to specify a track they'd like remixed instead of their submissions, we can totally do that. Just don't change it after the 20th, because that'd be an unfair time disadvantage to anyone remixing.

Good morning remixers! Today is officially May 20th, which means it's time for the brackets!

If you're reading this, you have until June 10th at 00:00 to submit a remix of your opponent's track. Welcome to Round 2!

@KI1 VS. @StixDevs

@G2961 VS. @Neon-Skies/@neonskiesofficial

@ireadysucks VS. @anthonyragus

@jotrocken VS. @CrimsonKero

@Aalasteir VS. @3manonmusic

@chordproduction VS. @monsanto64

If you should desire to change your track to be remixed for the round, do so TODAY!

After midnight, no changes will be permitted without the express permission of your opponent.

Please confirm your track, and make sure to @ your opponent!

Round 1 Submissions

Special Thanks: @TaintedLogic, who will serve as our tie-breaker!

How brackets were chosen: The quality of everyone's submissions was such, I felt better doing my research before assigning pairs. So, I spent the last 3 days examining your discographies.

Important factors were your compositional tendencies, style of production, and track complexity. Genre preferences, production techniques, and the values of each technical scoring category were also reviewed.

RULES FOR THE ROUND

As before, your track must follow all Newgrounds Audio Guidelines

https://www.newgrounds.com/wiki/help-information/terms-of-use/audio-guidelines

A common question is, is sampling of NG songs permitted? The answer is, yes, if the CC licensing allows transformative uses. However, please limit your sampling for the purposes of the round. The point is to reimagine your opponent's track, not reproduce it in its entirety.

You should strive to reimagine your opponent's track, especially in terms of genre, expression, reharmonization, and so on. For the purposes, treating it as a alt-genre cover/remix will probably serve you best. However, you can absolutely remain in the same genre. Everyone's style is different.

VICTORY CONDITIONS

The vote currently stands at 5 votes for head-to-head, and 4 votes for high-score. If you haven't voted already, do so here!

https://www.newgrounds.com/bbs/topic/1544868/1#bbspost28072643_post_text

Due to the scoring limitations of the 10 point system, @TaintedLogic will break any ties.

For head-to-heads, he will mark the victor of a tourney with an X. Otherwise, an additional numerical score for all tied tracks will be provided. These will be averaged so that the tied tracks are ranked against one-another accordingly, determining their order in the line-up.

Six competitors will survive into the Final Round. Until then, I can't wait to see what you'll come up with!

So that means they can remix a different track of my choice?

Does it have to be a remix, or can it be an original?

I'm glad you asked! Original or remix is fine. Provided everything is AP guidelines kosher, a remix of a remix would be totally in the spirit of the competition too.

Thanks @ADR3-N for analyzing the style of each composer. It made me wonder how many songs you based your assessment on...

In my case, you definitely made a good choice — the original track by @CrimsonKero is exactly my style.

Unfortunately, @CrimsonKero changed their selection, and even though I also like the more techno-influenced track, the more funky one was just cooler. But maybe the extra challenge is actually a good thing.

By the way, sorry for replying so late. Not that I wanted to change my track for round one, but I’m still 24 hours too late to respond.

Well, I guess that means the other rule applies now.

But before you get Highs before high

I also made the whole thing in FL Studio and rendered some tracks. I’ll just send them to you via DM — no pressure to use them.

I didn't have an exact number, but I spent a few hours with each, even going back a few years. The NG audio page playback feature is really useful for that.

No worries. Initially I didn't plan for folks swapping their tracks around, but because someone asked to change their track to be remixed, I had to offer it to everyone! I do think it will be a nice challenge either way, since no one's style is exactly alike, but that's why I checked out everyone's discographies.
