Mall Goth is the reason goth in general became commodified though, in fact it's peak consumerist goth because of Hot Topic and the malls.
The ideas are similar, but the aesthetic are very different and so is the basis. Goth is rooted in politics (as goth itself stems from punk, which makes in inherently political). Clean goth appeals to the conservative idealogies of a "clean aesthetic" as well as the attempt to separate goth fashion from goth music and politics. Yes, they were both made to pander to the idea that you can buy your way into the subculture, but whereas mall goth still keeps its roots somewhat in the music and politics clean goth tries to strip it entirely. You see that mall goth encourages the music with all the band tees and popularizing genres like nu-metal, while also keeping up with the edgy looks through hair and makeup and accessories, (which in turn goes against the conservative standards of keeping up a clean look) but when looking at "clean-goth" there is a complete separation. No music, no politics, and a watering-down of the aesthetic. Goth isn't just a fashion statement, or even just a music genre, but an entire subCULTURE. But enough about this, let me get back to drawing.
