So, we just recently had a thread by the brave @QueenSolomon about what not to do when making self-insert characters, and while that thread has been unlocked, I still want to go forward with the ideas I had for how spin it off into something more constructive. I might make some more threads about the topic of self-inserts/online personas, but for now I’m going to zero in on one aspect I have realized is really important.

You see, I’m working on revamping my “Cass” persona (planning on returning to this thread with an attempt at synthesizing the ideas people gave me), and it’s been really daunting so far.

What I realized very recently was wrong with my persona rework is that there wasn’t really a strong concept of her identity to define her design. Therefore, to make a self-insert, you first need to figure out what exactly they are and make it succinct. Because of who I am, I also pay special attention to characters’ fashion sense, and try to define it in case I want to put them in more than one outfit.

Some of my self-insert examples, characters I made to express myself in different ways:

iu_1355836_6994006.png

iu_1355837_6994006.png

  • Theta is a space zombie bodyguard, wearing a lot of black leather with neon accents like… almost cybergoth or cyberpunk, in a way?
  • Maron is a sleep paralysis demon, with a body made of black goo, who possesses emotion-driven shapeshifting capabilities. Her design is especially simple so that it can be changed in many different ways.
  • Jamie is the personality of an angry young man put in a woman’s body, with some industrial rock aesthetics.
  • The previous Cass (an accurate depiction of me irl) is a bespectacled dork with an unremarkable fashion sense. (I need to experiment with clothes more :’) )

And a couple examples from friends and acquaintances:

  • @M-kirbs’ Marie is a comfortably dressed dimensional traveler. Her outfits make it easy to see her upbeat personality at a glance, and the rounded shapes and pastel colors of her design are a perfect contrast with her spiky evil mirror counterpart, Mace (who I helped design! :3)
  • @TheGarbager619’s Garbo is designed to be this chubby, scruffy loser, with messy clothing to further the point. But he’s an endearing loser. I think Garbager is trying to make him less of a loser, to be less self-deprecating? Good for him.
  • @Skoops’s depiction of himself is a slightly insane-looking guy who lives in a trash can.

You get the idea.

Compare that to the rework of Cass:

iu_1355838_6994006.png

What exactly is she? A demon? Zombie/undead? Mercenary? There’s a bunch of details that hint at different ideas, but none of those are consistent throughout the entire design. I think the problem was that I was so emotionally attached to the idea of her “looking evil” that I didn’t have any idea of what she was beyond that.

While I’m working on creating something concrete to build from, I want you all to describe your own personas or self-inserts in a sentence or phrase. How do you present yourself to the internet, effectively?

Looks like my work has been done for me, so I'll switch it up.

Danu's not really a persona, but as the front-facing character on all my profiles, I like her to give the impression that I'm a little grumpy, so people read my posts voiced with the correct amount of agitation.

... I'm me.

I draw myself wearing a mask online where it's not really needed in hopes of reminding people to take care of one another. The look is kind of punk, which works for the stories I write. But also covering half the face is easier than deciding whether or not to draw facial hair, choosing a lip color, or setting one specific expression.

Self-inserts as I understand them (as a form of fan fiction that inserts the writer as a main character in the world of the story) aren't my style.

My online persona is a simplified version of me, like what you'd get if we were hanging out too long together on a street corner except without the sound of my voice or any scents of real life in the shared space or the need to talk about immediate concerns like weather.

Sometimes I want to draw myself with wings, but then I get bored. I draw a winged character and consider posting that.

Now that I think about it... there's a main character in every one of my long-length writing projects (novellas+) along with several in my short stories who has wings or flies. Huh. I actually hadn't noticed that before....

Seems like you’ve got a recurring theme. Flying is a fun power, and there’s so many beautiful ways that wings can look!

(Honestly, I wonder if I’d still have such prominent self-inserts if I hadn’t been ignored by my peers so much as a kid.)

I like to do all of my characters with some aspect based on myself, but Mouse has so many where he's basically just an exaggerated version of myself, and where I would consider as a self-insert, I guess. The whole reason why I made that thread was just me joking about how self-inserts should be used for something that could be potentially introspective. If I had to describe him in a single sentence would be if all of my neuroses were a person.
