NOT THE FINAL FANTASY SONIC X GUY!
I remember playing through that series... there was very little gameplay (specially in the earliest titles) but it was still fun.
rest in peace.
and to his family: get well soon.
OH GOD NOT HIM... HE WAS MY FAVORITE SONIC GAME FLASH FROM CHILDHOOD....!!!
Im feeling kinda numb by all of this news.
I lost my dad last year. cant even talk about my dad anymore
He was barely older than me. I should start taking care of myself...
We lost a legendary GOAT. May he rest in peace. Rest easy, ol' friend. o7
How's it going mate? 🤠
I've been absent from Newgrounds for a long time. I don't think I've used the forum in over a decade. But I felt if I'm going to speak on this anywhere, it should be here. This prompted me to return, and I'd like it to last. I've long thought about trying to reconnect with my roots, find old friends and rekindle the spark I had in this community again, but I never get around to it. I keep waiting for the right time, and I waited too long.
BlackDevilX is one of the first people I connected with here, and one of the first close friends I ever made online, back in 2004. We bonded instantly over our shared passions and sprite animation as our medium of expression. We liked to push each other to better our craft, sometimes as a friendly rivalry. Together we blazed a trail through the sprite animation scene, while being a part of the very medium's invention. He was essential in turning my passive participation in this creative space into an active one. And here I am, 20 years later, a seasoned multidisciplinary creative professional, whose drive and inspiration continues to emanate from this advent. BDX has affected me in ways I may never fully appreciate.
That Newgrounds continues to not only survive, but thrive all these years later, in spite of the shifting internet and cultural landscape, is truly a silver lining. The ripple effect our community had on wider culture is monumental and scarcely known or understood by the latest generation. It is something I think about quite a lot. And I think, seeing the outpouring of passionate responses to BDX's sprite animations from over 15 years ago, still that significant to people even now, demonstrates a curious profoundness to our community and its creativity that I always intuitively knew was there. It reminds me that we really were on to something. And despite how niche it may appear, BDX was no small part of it. I'm unsure if even he knew the extent his work touched the world, and in ways that may be broader and stranger than just the colorful video game fandoms who knew and loved it directly.
I've been active on the internet since the 90s. I've dealt with a lot of people. I've dealt with a lot of terrible people. I've had friends up and stab me in the back, even after knowing them for years. I have a bloody trail behind me of wasted friendships and emotions. And in all this time, BDX remained a real friend to me. He was more genuine than most people I've dealt with, and I regret giving my time to the wrong people. After our heyday, we slowly drifted away. Understandably, we built our own lives and put our time into that. He started a family. We started to leave our toys behind. We talked less. Aspirations turned to reminiscence. In the last few years, we only chatted occasionally. Most of the time, he would be the one to initiate it. I tend to be reclusive, introverted. Now I'm wishing I did more to reach out. To just decide at any point to be the one to connect, be more of the friend he was to me. It always feels like there's plenty of time, we can hit it up whenever. But, this was a serious reminder that we can't depend on that. We have to actively make what we have count.
BDX always called me Shorty, based on the first name I had on Newgrounds. That's what he knew me as when we met and that's what he knew me as 20 years later. I never mention that name, but you can find it in the credits of his animations if you go looking. I used to jokingly get after him for continuing to use that name for me, but now I'm glad it'll stay that way forever.
I'm gonna miss you BDX.
he is in a better place now,, rest in peace, his work was awsome <3

Rob Lewis, aka BlackDevilX was best known around here for the Final Fantasy Sonic X and Super Smash Allstars series.

He was also a father, radio show host and loved connecting with fans.
His history on NG spans 15 years and his last Tweet was a playful throwback to the FF Sonic X series:
Rob passed of a heart attack while on vacation with his family in Aruba, as reported by his sister and relayed to me by @JRetrioX, a huge BDX fan.
Rob will be missed and has been added to the In Memoriam page.
Vividly remembered playing Final Fantasy Sonic as kid with my older Brother and watching with him alongside SMBZ

Even played final fantasy sonic on youtube

I watched his FFSX content way back in my years as playing games of it...I would've seen the continuation of his FFSX series. But now he's no longer with us and I have one thing to say...God rest his soul and may he find a new adventure for him up above mother Earth.
He was a big part of my childhood and how i got familiar with other titles outside of Sonic, Rest in Peace BlackDevilX.
Didn't know about him, but I have heard that he did a lot for this site, for that I'll say, thank you BDX, may you rest in peace, wishing the best for your friends and family.

R.I.P BlackDevilX as I remember the FF Sonic X series before I had an account by a whole decade. During the golden era of flash. I remember playing one of the titles due to the only free games at the time were only on PC through flash games.
r.i.p fella
You will be missed.
