I played Streets of Rogue today. I got a good squad on and then this happening!
The game is very fun in my opinion, and there are so many different playstyles!
You can unlock many mutations, which change the game.

I like the "pick up and play"-ness of them but a lot of roguelikes are so luck-based that I either have a great time or I lose interest after only a few runs because the perks are unnoticeable and the debuffs end your run immediately.
*looks angrily at Rogue Legacy*

Ehhh it depends on what kind of roguelike you're trying to make. Like a roguelike RPG would benefit from having spells or abilities that have effects that you won't immediately notice until you have tons stacked together. But an action roguelike could benefit from runs being a little samey and power ups should take significant effect as soon as you pick it up.

That makes a lot of sense.

I tried playing Fortress with that, but they died from some mysterious purple stuff.

Just look at Rogue Legacy lmfao.
Runs are far too reliant on whatever buffs or debuffs your character is born with. They range from some nothing cosmetic quirk, to "just end your run now and reroll for a new character". The dungeon layouts aren't super varied and it just feels less like a roguelike and more like a standard Metroidvania with the occasional weird randomly occurring event.
I'm gonna be that guy for a moment, what you're playing is a rogue-lite, rogue-likes are strictly turn-based.
A personal favorite I keep coming back to is Dungeons of Dredmor. It's a charming game.
theyre good in concept but usually lean too far into needing luck to win, which i dont like. enter the gungeon is really good though
sometimes, i'll leave for like a month, then i'll come back and be all like "whooaaaa new shit"
YOOOO I love Streets of Rogue, one of my all time favorites, Matt Dabrowski's going WILD for the second game, demo's out already! Peak emergent gameplay that begs the question why even bother with superficial facades and pretty graphics in open worlds if you can't even do anything in them like GTA. I also love the stakes it gives. Can't be casual, play half-drunk or high. You're in it to win it, and the unpredictability makes it tense every time like a sport. You could genuinely fail, fuck up, get back luck, or power through it. High variety, it's beautiful. No save scumming, no easy way out. It's beautiful. Of course, the theme has to be really good or I don't care, but urban sandbox chaos for missions is absolutely the sort of thing I'm interested.
I love traditional rouge likes
Infra Arcana
Tales of Maj’eyal
Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup
Cogmind
I can list more but those are some I recommend
About as over saturated as shooters and 2D platformers, but less fun.
Take it with a grain of salt, I am slower than a snail.
streets of rogue is a good one! excited for the sequel
If the roguelike is not from the playmarket, like the "soul knight", then I like it

Streets of Rogue is a nice roguelike game! Might give the game a try someday.

Their features, their music, their graphics and their stories are the four things that I love about them.

can't blame you for feeling that way about the genre. i hope this issue has died down by now, but last time i tried to find a new rogue-like to play there was an epidemic of mis-tagged games that were nothing like rogue, they were a completely different genre (usually bullet hell subgenres). some of those mis-tagged games were fun and all, but when you put the wrong label in your product, you're also making it harder for people who want your product to find it.
aaaaaaand since i bothered to reply:
i miss playing Zorbus and Shattered Pixel Dungeon. Pixel Dungeon was also nice, but Shattered made the game much less luck-reliant. Zorbus doesn't have item identification nor hunger, which is why i liked it so much (you are already unlikely to live to see the 1st downstairs even without that hassle). i need to pick up Angand again though. that heritage system sounds nice, but it's been centuries since i last played it.
my opinion of the genre in general is that the need for food rarely makes any real sense, it just forces you to rush to the next level asap and pray that you'll get enough items and experience to survive, in other words, it just enforces the need for luck and some of the games where you're sure to get food, the stuff becomes more inventory clutter (unless there's a cooking mechanic to make the specific food you eat more relevant). would be interesting if there was a rogue-like where we eat our defeated foes though, that would make the hunger feel more like a proper survival mechanic and less like something shoved in to pressure the player. could also be skill issue, since i rarely make it far enough to see the interesting food-related mechanics, when they're present.
My favorites are Castle of the Winds and the first two Diablo games.
I guess I had a good time with the two hour trial of Torchlight back in the day.
A truly prophetic sig...
I like roguelikes when they are only half roguelikes and half of another genre. I love deckbuilder roguelikes. Chrono Ark is amazing from beginning to end. I even like some truly ancient roguelikes, like Castle of the Winds.
I like them when there is progression beyond what occurs in a single run. I enjoy games with rounds that can be completed in 30 minutes or so, but I need the rounds to be working towards something long term. I wouldn't play dead by daylight if not for the battle pass, although that's not exactly a roguelike. Extraction shooters are attractive for this reason, but it's hard to find an online shooter that's not super sweaty to the point of being not fun.
