Greetings Musicians,

Battles of the bands is back by popular demand (for some reason), but this time we’ll be mixing things up by allowing one man bands to enter due to the large amount of drop outs last year. Collaborating with other musicians is encouraged but not compulsory so all you musicians who prefer to rock solo can now enter as a solo act provided that you create a song within the time frame and that fits within any of the allowed genres. Like last year one band will claim victory.

The genres allowed are: Rock/Metal, Punk, Blues, Jazz, and Folk.

You’ll have one month to create a song which you will publish to the submissions thread. Please use the tags Botb, battle-of-the-bands-2024, and Botb2024. Another requirement will be to make some cover art for your track which will serve as your CD icon, please keep all art SFW and try to include your band/project name in the art, think of it as album art. When you have finished making your song you'll post a link to it in the Battle of the Bands Submission thread. Participants will have One month to create a song for this contest, good luck to everyone participating this year.

Rules:

- Your song must comply with the Audio Portal rules (that’s a no brainer)

- Your song must fit into any of the genres listed.

- No samples allowed (The goal is to create a song that can be replicated live to emulate a real battle of the band contest.)

- Limit the number of electronic synths used. Real instruments are encouraged, Virtual instruments are allowed.

- Songs should be a minimum of 2 minutes and 30 seconds long and a maximum length of 10 minutes.

- Keep lyrics SFW and not too explicit. M rating is allowed.

- Credit all your band members when publishing the song and note their roles in the description, as well as any artwork such as the band logo/CD icon.

- Your cover art must be SFW and include your band/project name in it.

- Upload your song in 320kbps so that every track is of the same audio quality

Prizes: $100 for first place

Start date: November 3rd

Submission deadline: December 3rd

Judging period: December 4th - TBD

Just like last year I will need another panel of judges. @TaintedLogic @Bosa @ADR3-N & @ChronoNomad if you four are able to judge again this year then it would be appreciated, if not then please let me know.

I think I'm guna have a stab at this as a one man band. I love the idea of a full unedited take of each instrument to make it feel live. I might even film it for the crack.

I would be honored to bear witness to such a musical spectacle once again, and I shall indeed extol the virtue of my critical ear. May all who enter be blessed by the muse!

I'm unsure what you mean by comp songs, could you elaborate?

Songs with instruments recorded in multiple takes (compiling)

Not sure what that is, not sure I described it right. Like two songs in one song, like a compilation. I'm pretty sure it's not called a comp song now that I think about it

I see, I'll allow comp songs for this contest provided that they are original and fit into any of the allowed genres.

I've never been in a contest like this, but it sounds fun! Are solo instrument pieces allowed, like a song that's just one instrument provided it's in one of the styles listed? If not that's okay, could be an opportunity to challenge myself by composing a song with multiple instruments.

and when my song is finished do I just upload it like any other song just with the proper tags and link it in the submissions thread?

I'll allow for solo instrument songs, I make a lot of those types of tracks myself. However full band mixes are encouraged though since you'll be up against other musicians who will be making full band mixes for their songs.

Yes, when your song is finished you'll upload it like you normally do with the correct tags which are; Botb2024, botb, and battle-of-the-bands-2024. And you'll post a link to that song in the Battle of the Bands 2024 - Entries Thread.

How strict are we on genre? I have a song I'd like to submit, but it mixes a fusion between heavy metal and half dubstep/cybertrance/dark electronic something. It does feature electric guitar through most of the song

I'd say fairly strict, however can your song be performed live? Since this contest focuses on music that is often performed lived as it is a digital presentation of Battle of the Bands.

Oh no! Well unlike last year's contest this year's one allows for one man bands/solo acts to enter with the collaboration element being optional now.

Damn, I only just saw this on the front page.

I won't have time to finish comping stems for my main band to submit (my lead vocalist has her 6 month job probation coming up and we still need to record a couple pick ups, plus i need to finish tracking lead guitar and I have essays I'm overdue on) but I have a side project with friends that has tracks that are mixed for a new album.

Is it okay to submit material that wasn't created explicitly for the BotB? If so, I have around three tracks in mind to choose from, but I'm not sure if they'd best fit into rock or punk (we tend to go by folk punk after the first record which was more like chamber pop, but there's a couple that are maybe more post-punk/post-hardcore). Listening to this, this or this, would you place us into either genre?

It'd be really fun to join in and see what everyone puts out, but if we don't qualify hopefully we can join in on the next one!

After listening to your music I would say yes it does fit into the genres of both folk and punk. It reminded me a bit of Anti-folk actually. Since the deadline is coming up soon I'll allow it this time for you to submit material that wasn't explicitly made for Botb, just make sure to use the correct tags which are; Battle-of-the-bands-2024, botb, and botb2024. Also post a link to your track in the Battle of the Bands 2024 - Entries thread as well.

Excellent! Even if I submit a piece and upon further review it's found that my song doesn't fit the spirit of this contest, I can still withdraw. But for now I'll add my hat into the ring

Yo, really sorry but I don't think I'll make the deadline on this. My Mrs wrote off the car last week, and I'm having to spend all my free time trying to find a used one and taking on extra work to cover it all. If I get one sorted today there's a chance but it's not looking likely.

That's sad to hear, I hope that both you and your Mrs are doing alright. Having a car written off is quite a scary and serious matter entirely. Take care SkankyMojo and don't worry about my silly little music contest, IRL events are more important anyway.
