We’re experimenting with bringing back ads at the moment. Based on how Tuesday goes, they might go away or there might be a lot more of them.
Calling it now, we return to 2007 internet without adblock.

Damn, it felt like NG has gone through such long streak without ads. I hope you find a way to make them as unobtrusive as possible if things don't go as planned tomorrow.

I know, we're approaching five full years without them! I think most people never really appreciated it because most the people here have ad blockers.

I feel like you read my mind there - I contemplated floating that idea (sorta) by you for a while (though I did say I wasn't expecting you to go through with it back in June).
By my guess, its gonna be allowing Supporters to serve ads on Newgrounds. Giving my personal opinion on this before it goes live (and risking public embarrassment if my prediction's off the mark): Good call, Fulp. Here's three major reasons why:

Tom, are you going to use something called ethicalads if you were to do more advertising? I hope you don't sign a pact with the devil and go with google ads.

We're considering doing our own in-house system and having a fixed amount of slots available but it feels unlikely it would generate meaningful revenue each month.

I need to ask, if this won't make much, why are you doing this? Or will we find out tuesday innit?

This is a consideration, bypassing a dedicated ad buying system and making it a Supporter perk with a higher threshold, like if you pay at least $20 per month you can insert your ad into the rotation.

What's to stop people from buying ads for stormfront though? You'll have to screen every single ad that comes through or whitelist/blacklist external stuff you can advertise for?

Yup there would definitely be an approval process if we did this, so it would become part of the daily chores. Too many approvals at $20 a pop wouldn't be the worst problem to have, though!
There would be the problem of people who simply can't get approved, they would need a refund and we'd lose some processing fees on that. The alternative is to let them get approved before becoming Supporters but that would be a lot more busywork with people just testing it out without paying. We'd at least try to make it clear what sort of ads they wouldn't be allowed to promote.

NSFW's almost certainly off the table, though I suspect you won't have to deal with too many people trying to get porn ads through the system.

We actually could allow people to give their ad a rating, so if they are promoting something like adult commissions that could be an option.

An idea was roaming around in my head that would fit very well with Newgrounds I think.
Imagine there would be a way for users to buy a certain amount of a new NG "currency", say 100 NG$ per 1$US.
Then a user could distribute NG$ to creators of their choice, and when a user cashes out, it pays out 0.90$US per 100 NG$
People encouraging artists would give 10% to NG by doing so, and it would be seen as a good argument by many artists probably to bring their fans on NG. It would also mean that 10% of any amount of NG$ bought could be used right away, then the 90% remaining waiting for distribution to artists and cash out, could be used to generate interests while it sits there.
Then interests could trickle into prize pools, attracting more artists.

This was actually the plan with Grounds Gold, which NG accounts had been secretly accumulating since 2000 based on their performance in The Portal, although that probably broke at one point. The eventual idea was that people could barter their gold for services from each other, like if you need someone to help with cleanup or coloring on a project.
Amusingly, this is what Crypto essentially could have brought to NG as well. We could have turned Grounds Gold into an NG crypto coin and could have stockpiled the initial batch to pay out as a sort of site rev share. The coin could then be traded for services, or sold for whatever the market is willing to pay for it on crypto exchanges, potentially becoming worth millions, or nothing, depending on how all that goes.

It's an interesting concept to trade services among artists and encourage collaboration! Having a in house currency tied to a crypto in the real world could gain lots of value by itself, or lose it all, I'm not that well versed into this though!
I was thinking of it similar to twitch bits. All users could buy any amount of NG$ for real money or vice versa, all users would have a in site "bank account" of NG$. I think tying it to US$ would make it more trustworthy, but I might be wrong. I don't know the legal implications or how hard it would be to implement, or if it would be better with cryptos associated to it. But I think the launch of a "digital product" by NG in the form of virtual currency, would be well received and would generate decent inflow of funds. It could be traded between users at will, for services as you mention, or as donations.
It's pretty cool that you already thought of such concept! I think it would be an awesome feature.
I'm excited to see what this new feature brings! Is it a time sensitive thing, or will it be available all day Tuesday starting from 12am (with the exception of tomorrow being mid day)?
+1 for a supporter based advertisement system, but also -1 because I worry about how it would be implemented, how invasive it would be, and how it could be abused. I do think there could be more methods similar to the hidden message and weekly front page posts (speaking of which, I miss when it was a 2 week cooldown), just little things for people to get their stuff in front of people without getting front paged by moderators. But on the other hand, making newgrounds "pay to win" like that would have a lot of ugly consequences.

I could see this working in an alternate timeline where web3 is an actual thing. Too bad blockchain technology did not manage to break away from mere financial speculation so far (maybe one day!).

The entire idea of web3's pretty much dead, and has been for a while. You want someone specific to blame, blame Dan Olson - that man publicly executed web3 with Line Goes Up back in 2022:
(Seriously, this is a damn good teardown of the whole space - I'd highly recommend watching it)
