It's already been over 4 years since Flash Player shut down, huh?

Feels like just yesterday that I was greeted with that big button telling me it's discontinued...

Newgrounds has been using Ruffle to run Flash content in the browser ever since Flash was removed from browsers at the end of 2020.

Ruffle was originally created by @Mike but is now maintained by a dedicated and brilliant team of developers. Please consider sponsoring Ruffle if you’re a fan of Flash preservation and open source projects.

If you’d like to help test games with Ruffle, check out the Ruffle Testing / Flash Preservation Crew.

We also host an annual Flash Forward Jam, encouraging people to make new games and interactive movies with Flash. Flash Forward 2025 will kick off early next year and has the potential to be great, as Ruffle has come a long way this year!

We’ve been switching over more and more classic Flash games to run via Ruffle. Here are a few I’ve enjoyed recently:

FNF - Playable Pico

The latest Friday Night Funkin’ update went live last night, with playable Pico! Press TAB on the level select screen to change your character.

Brazil Day Art Contest

The Brazil Day Art Contest is now in progress, with a deadline of October 13th! The theme of this contest is to illustrate a Brazilian variant of any character you want, in the spirit of the Brazilian Miku trend, which got a recent boost from this piece by @MitsuTan:

Sign ups for Sketch Collab 2024 have opened! Check out previous Sketch Collabs to see what they're like:

Dreamcast Collab

The Dreamcast Collab is out and it’s massive, with 313 artists involved! It’s so big, we had to finally start cropping the credits box by default. We’ll be doing more work in that space later.

Monthly Voting

Our new Monthly Voting System launched last weekend and if you received an invite from P-Bot, today is the last day to rank your favorites for the Best of August.

We also introduced monthly trophies and made them retroactive, going back to the first monthly awards in 2005!

If nothing breaks, expect the Best of August to be announced tomorrow.

The tentative surprise movie has been postponed to next week!

Fulp, the previews for the Flas in the dumping grounds doesn't seem to load or open, even when opened in a new tab, is it possible to do something about it?

Using Ruffle in Dump is on the todo list, there's a few extra steps involved there.

Guys, is there a dedicated thread where you can discuss Ruffle's integration/bugs on NG?

For example, I recently came across a weird behavior on NG's mobile website (iOS/Chrome). Ruffle demos and most games are working well for me in Chrome on iOS, but sometimes I have this weird glitch when instead of showing me the Ruffle player and playing the content, NG randomly shows the notification "This submission is incompatible with your device" (or something like that), and sometimes it just loads Ruffle normally.

This is weird because games are actually working fine when I manage to randomly load the Ruffle on NG from my phone. Looks like it's NG-specific and it's extremely random, because I tested given games on my server with self-hosted Ruffle, and they're completely fine.

This come down to whether Ruffle has been turned on for that individual game. In the case of mobile, sometimes we have Ruffle turned on for desktop but not for mobile because the game requires keyboard support / isn't touchscreen friendly. We might ultimately want to try running things in Ruffle regardless, although that could result in negative reviews by people who run into functionality barriers.

There are however a lot of games that work in Ruffle but haven't had it turned on yet. If you have specific ones you are trying to play on mobile that you believe will work on mobile, you could list them here and we could activate Ruffle on those.

Ideally we should also offer a link that attempts to run the game in Ruffle, even when it hasn't been formally activated.

Thank you for the reply, Tom, I appreciate it!!

Yes, that's exactly what I was thinking: a disclaimer that lets you know the game could potentially be incompatible with your device but with the button to turn Ruffle emulation anyway 🤔

Speaking of which, I'm usually fixing this case by manually adding "?emulate=flash" on the mobile Chrome and it works, I'm just surprised that the site sometimes does that randomly by itself, and sometimes not, which is a bit weird.

Are you clicking on links to games from the hubs and search when they end up having "?emulate=flash" in the URL, or are the links from elsewhere like the forums?

Also to answer one of your original questions, we have a Club thread where we test games for Ruffle compatibility:

Today I visited the links synched via my Google account from my desktop, and at first, it showed me the version with forced flash emulation. Then I went to the creator's page and tried other games from the list, and got notifications that they were incompatible with the device.

Then I went to the game from the saved URL again and that one also showed me the notification. Then I cleared browsing data and reloaded the page, it showed me Ruffle and played the game, and then after another reload it started showing the notification until I edited the URL 🤔
