Ruffle & Flash Preservation Update

Dinnerbone has published a blog post highlighting ongoing progress with Ruffle!

Newgrounds has been using Ruffle to run Flash content in the browser ever since Flash was removed from browsers at the end of 2020.

Ruffle was originally created by @Mike but is now maintained by a dedicated and brilliant team of developers. Please consider sponsoring Ruffle if you’re a fan of Flash preservation and open source projects.

If you’d like to help test games with Ruffle, check out the Ruffle Testing / Flash Preservation Crew.

We also host an annual Flash Forward Jam, encouraging people to make new games and interactive movies with Flash. Flash Forward 2025 will kick off early next year and has the potential to be great, as Ruffle has come a long way this year!

We’ve been switching over more and more classic Flash games to run via Ruffle. Here are a few I’ve enjoyed recently:

Expect Ruffle performance to keep improving in the months ahead and thank you everyone who continues to work on Ruffle and help with Flash preservation efforts!

FNF - Playable Pico

The latest Friday Night Funkin’ update went live last night, with playable Pico! Press TAB on the level select screen to change your character.

If you like the FNF wall art, @KornArt3 posted a standalone version in the Art Portal:

Brazil Day Art Contest

The Brazil Day Art Contest is now in progress, with a deadline of October 13th! The theme of this contest is to illustrate a Brazilian variant of any character you want, in the spirit of the Brazilian Miku trend, which got a recent boost from this piece by @MitsuTan:

Sketch Collab 2024

Sign ups for Sketch Collab 2024 have opened! Check out previous Sketch Collabs to see what they're like:

Dreamcast Collab

The Dreamcast Collab is out and it’s massive, with 313 artists involved! It’s so big, we had to finally start cropping the credits box by default. We’ll be doing more work in that space later.

Monthly Voting

Our new Monthly Voting System launched last weekend and if you received an invite from P-Bot, today is the last day to rank your favorites for the Best of August.

We also introduced monthly trophies and made them retroactive, going back to the first monthly awards in 2005!

If nothing breaks, expect the Best of August to be announced tomorrow.

The tentative surprise movie has been postponed to next week!

I guess I better start thinking about the Shitpost Sketch Collab soon then! Since it's become a bit of a tradition.

Ruffle is genuinely amazing! It is far cooler than the in-house Flash Player.

None of the security issues that Flash had and there's a lot of stuff that's running better in Ruffle than it did in Flash! Just gonna keep getting better as performance and compatibility improve.

Other websites like archive.org use ruffle for flash content emulation in the web archives. That's awesome.

I wish Tomfulp own the rights to Adobe and keep flash alive forever. Also he would be rich too.

Next stop…open-source Flash authorer! I thiiiiink that could be done without making Adobe mad…? Otherwise Adobe needs to keep not caring so they sell Flash off to a better home like with Adobe AIR

Hey Tom, little correction: The Brazilian Miku trend as a whole started with This artwork back in June. The trend was boosted by Mitsu's awesome artwork and others as well!

Oh damn has it been 8 years since Ruffle launched? Insane.

It still feels mindblowing to me that you can run Flash stuff on phones, but I guess that's been normal for almost a decade now.

Either way, looking forward to the ever so closer 100% - things will get wild!

Swivel is open source now but it likely won't be getting updated to support newer versions of Adobe Animate, which are what break it. The real question is, why does a modern Adobe Animate user need Swivel - how has Adobe not solved video export yet?

I haven't used it in at least the last 2 versions of Animate, so I can't speak 100% but I think Swivel is still the better choice for rendering videos. Just the fact it can do code & translate it into the video is incredible, I don't think the built in exporter can do that. At least it couldn't when I last tried it.

Rocking Swivel with the latest Animate currently, and avoiding the camera issues is not a big deal: Instead of letting Animate tween everything when you enable the camera layer, just convert layers into symbol when done, and tween it yourself. Works flawlessly.

Yeah, it's attributed to Mitsu cuz her post got way more traction than the OG one! so more people saw that and started reposting and quote tweeting her art, boosting it a lot and expanded the already existing trend to the point that most people believe she made the design and started the trend as a whole, but no, she was just a big lever to make it popular. Even popular websites like Known Your Meme attributed it to her, but it's normal that people get confused since the OG has way less likes and views than Mitsu's drawing 😅

Genuinely awesome to hear, especially given this is only the beginning of optimisation efforts AFAIK.

What a coincidence, I just finished reading this earlier today. One of things that stood out to me was support on Android. Outside of the Play Store, does this mean that for Flash games being emulated via a browser app (ala Brave, Chrome, or Firefox) they'll be able to have full touchscreen support instead of reading all inputs like a computer mouse?

I don't think it will introduce new functionality that didn't exist in Flash but I do think AS3 had multi-touch support, so that could be supported on mobile. Don't quote me on that though, someone closer to the development should weigh in on that!

Oh, I did not know that about AS3. I assumed it was like AS2 but extra complicated.
