Our new Monthly Voting System launched on Saturday and voting for the Best of August is in progress.
For the first time, we’re including Art and Audio in the selection process!
Also for the first time, winners will be receiving trophy badges on their pages. This update is retroactive, meaning all the top five movies and games from the past now have trophies, on both the content pages and the author trophies page.
One thing that might cause confusion: When we first introduced monthly awards in February 2005, movies and games were combined into a single Top Five. We still retained all the voting data, however, so these entries now have trophies based on their respective categories.
For example, Interactive Buddy was #1 for February 2005 and now has a first place trophy for the games category, while Bunnykill 2 was #2 for February 2005 but now has a first place trophy for the movie category.
This inconsistency only exists for the first five months of awards, as we split winners into Movies and Games in June 2005. Side note, it’s a shame Xombie was removed at the request of a film development deal that never panned out.
Dreamcast Collab
The Dreamcast Collab has launched!
This is a downright massive collab, celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Sega Dreamcast in North America. An even more impressive interactive version is coming later this month, complete with an art gallery and music listening station.
This collab got so big, in fact, that it is forcing our hand with a change some of you have requested over the years but I’ve always been a bit stubborn about.
First, some history: Besides being the first website that allowed people to instantly publish games and movies on the web, Newgrounds was also the first website to introduce a multi-author crediting system, in April of 2003. This system has gotten a lot of use in the 21 years since, although sometimes the credits get a bit too long for some people’s taste, on mobile in particular. In those cases, we’ve been asked to collapse the credits by default, with the option to expand.
I’ve never been a big fan of that idea because I love seeing long credits lists. It’s a point of pride that NG brings so many talented people together and they end up making these mega projects, where the author list is like a flex of how great this place is.
With the Dreamcast Collab, however, the page response lag is noticeable. We’ve decided it’s probably time to crop longer author lists, with an option to expand. Expect that soonish, then we’ll see how it feels. Probably something like this:
