As a cartoonist, I love learning about cartoons that very few people know about (a lot of them being from other countries). One example would be Arthur! And the Square Knights of the Round Table, an Australian cartoon that aired in 1966. The art style really gives me Jay Ward and Total Television vibes, and it's opening intro's very bouncy and cartoony! How come this didn't air in the U.S!? So, what's the most obscure cartoon you know about? I would love to know!
Not more than a month ago someone made an 'obscure fanart' thread where I talked about this lil thing:
At 7/17/24 02:32 PM, Narratorway wrote:Digging out the mothballs for this one! These are characters to a movie that never got completed called My Little World. I was in college at the time, first time both really learning how to art (hence, the kicking kid having both his feet be backwards) and first time really having unfettered access to the internet and oddly enough not using it to find porn! Instead, I was scouring for animation projects like this that were small enough that I might have a chance at getting hired for one once I got out. That never happened, but the trailer I saw for this really tickled me something fierce. It covered all the bases of the kinda animated stories I wanted to see more of! Even bought a poster to help support the movie.
So far as I know, it never got completed, which is quite the damned shame.

That looks nice! never heard of it before. Guess that's why I made this thread.
Field of Green by Sky David, very beautiful, dramatic animation
the viewcount on this youtube upload is pretty low, but Davis' work does get played at experimental animation screenings. (There's a pro-tip for finding stuff like this, search for "avant-garde" or "experimental" animation screenings, websites advertising past events will have a curated list of short films) (Here's my experimental animation playlist)
It's a animated Japanese short, based of a poem. It's also one of the few pieces of Japanese animation that does not have a standard "anime look" to it.

I like how surreal it is. I also like the art style of the backgrounds and characters, they look UPA-ish.

I think I have a couple:
- Bulgarian Treasure Planet. Essentially what Disney did but this film was made in the 80s and it's very bizarre. I think most people have at least heard of it since it was covered by some youtubers, but it is still worth mentioning.
- Toonanimals, which was this obsure educational tv series that I think originated from Spain(?). I used to have DVDs of it when I was younger and haven't seen anyone talk about it anywhere.
- Son of White Mare which is a Hungarian film. I planned on watching this one but still haven't. From what i've seen online, its visuals are very stunning

I'm pretty sure I've heard about the Bulgarian Treasure Island before, I think through someone's review of it on DeviantArt. I couldn't find Toonanimals but I did find Toonimals, I'm assuming that's what you're telling me about. And Son of White Mare looks interesting, I'll give it a watch eventually.

Freak! Yeah, it was Toonimals. I miswrote it, sorry about that!
In Poland we have a lot of obscure cartoons: "Hip-hip and Huray", "Noodles", uncanny religious animations from "Clay QB", emberassing "Ślonsko Familijo", 3D version of South Park "Pitu Pitu", cartoon with boomerish humor "Mr. Gorzała", parody of Mickey Mouse: "Pogrom Myszki Miki", where he is tortured and the animation itself is lost media, and the only evidence is one screenshot, Also lost is animation "Czy to był sen?", which was a WW2 and holocaust alegory, political "Salomon Gier", never released "Hardkor 44", creepy "Teddy's Nightmare" and mamy, Many, more...

Speaking of which, there was a Polish 2D fbf animated movie around Y2K, based on a long running comic series.
Tytus, Romek i A'Tomek wśród Złodziei Marzeń
Sadly, even though the animation itself is quite nice and to this day a rare example of hand drawn post-Bloc Polish animation, the plot sucks hard. It can be described as a half-assed PSA built on the worst and most predictable dollar bin clichés the writers could find. What a shame, and what a waste of potential.

"Czy to był sen?" the biggest lost media that is never discovered, and I remember those animations above what you say.

I remember hearing about the Mickey Mouse parody short before. From what I've heard, it was made by Polish animator Jan Jarosz who hated Mickey Mouse. So apparently anti-Mickey humor has existed ever since Mickey was created.

Kick Buttowski: Suburban Daredevil. It was my childhood when it aired on Disney XD. Its obscure now but I loved the weird loud humor.

I think I remember watching that show as a kid. I also remember MAD's parody of it on Cartoon network.

sense you mentioned other countries. i got a few from egypt that i don't think anyone outside here heard of
so:
mishmish afandi is the oldest cartoon from the country that isn't lost media(there is one older, but i don't remember it's name) made in in 1939. there is somewhere around 30 short films for it but the only one i know of online is this one with either french or German subs i am not sure
there is bakkar, a show kids about a child named bakkar and his pet goat teaching kids lessons and stuff. pretty much got plastered on every type of kids toys and merch you can think of it ran from 1998 until the original creator(egyptian animation queen mona abu nasir)'s death in 2003, her son(sherief gamal) continued the show until 2007..... it got an ugly 3D reboot in 2015 and got cancelled a year later but we pretend that didn't happen.
mona is pretty much the queen of egyptian animation, her studio cairocartoons is still the biggest in the country. after finishing bakkar, her son sherif gamal went on to lead the studio to this day. they make a lot of things.... am gonna just highlight super henedi
originally sherif tried to do a simpsons style show after how horrible the simpsons arabic dub was(if you know you know) named elit ostaz amin(mr amin's family) but the show failed because of distribution problems, the idea of a "cartoon targeted to adults" was new to the region.
a few years later he said fuck it and made another adult oriented comedy show named super henedi about a detective solving crimes and dealing with his mom in law. while amin's family kinda tried to do social comentary it still tried to be family friendly.... super henedi had people smuggling crack and an episode named "episode 5: hello. a group of criminals hijacked the plane and it is being driven by an idiot. roger".... the show still failed because of being aired on a dead block

Mish-Mish looks interesting, I like its designs. Didn't know cartoons from Egypt existed that long.

Yes, this is what I talked about.

I totally about Colonel Bleep! I need to watch it eventually. I have a DVD from a GoodTimes Video box set (which contains a lot of public domain cartoons from Superman, Popeye, Betty Boop, and Dodo the Kid from Outer Space) that contains an episode of it, except they butchered it by adding a bunch of new sound effects in it. I guess they wanted it to have surround sound or something.

Yea it sucks :(
Cartoon "restorations" like that have always bugged me. I also hate it when by use DVNR (digital video noise reduction) on them. One example of this is the Classic Media DVDs of Rocky and Bullwinkle. Whenever something's animating on ones or the screen shakes, there's a lot of noticeable DVNR, like on the image below. Not only that, but they use the incorrect theme songs for them, too! (I think is because they weren't able to get the rights to use the Rocky and His Friends theme for some reason).

I searched for Growing up Creepy as it had reruns and completely forgot about it. It was fun at least from what I can remember as the last time I saw it was 9 years ago.
Watched Captain Flamingo a lot of times. Not the best but also not the worst.
