I really think this is magnitudes better than previous attempts at shading. Still have ways to go, but it looks more sphereical than previous attempts.
At least there's more subtly with transition from the light - dark side at the terminator line. Previously mine would have a halo effect where it was too abrupt on the changes.

Why are the basic hard/soft brushes so popular? Doesn't matter if Photoshop, Krita, or GIMP. I keep seeing those kinds of brushes being recommended. Is it really true you can do pretty much anything with just those 5 or so brushes?

Usually when you have to pick a brush it's more of "the effect." Limiting yourself allows you to easily see which one is which instead of finding "the perfect brush for the job." Brushstrokes and techniques tend to develop overtime as one uses that brush more and more.
And then there's pixel-art where their every stroke is a square of the same size and they can leave just as much of an impression to you.

Seen this video before the general knowledge about how certain shapes convey certain emotions is helpful. But it honestly enrages me how they just butcher pretty good art and call it a better design because it follow "shape language".
