Dream Theater's drummer is better.
than Hellhammer? Ex-Arcturus, Winds, Carnivora, etc...? BLASPHEMY!
Mike Portnoy beats Hellhammer hands down.
Don't make me get Nev get in here.
Hellhammer usually has a constant flurry of cymbals and bass drum for usually the whole song. Mike Portnoy is good, but he's honestly OVERFUCKINGRATED.
Most NY street drummers will have Portnoy in a twist. Portnoy (hell, all of dream theater) is just overrated wankery and repetition. Sure, Mayhem can get repetitive, but it's only an illusion; it's through repetition that they build up strength and steam before releasing it in an epic display of songwriting and talent. Dream Theater is just repetitive, overrated, wankery.
There, I said it. Portnoy may put down a mean solo, but in the actual SONGS, he's not that impressive. Not that I can do better, but Jan Axel Von Blomberg, nowadays, is such a fucking BEAST. He transcends genres, he transcends all the fancy drumsets Portnoy may have, he just fucking ROCKS. He incorporates incredible, seamless, and jaw dropping beats into Mayhem, Arcturus, Winds, etc... songs and does it for a REALLY FUCKING LONG TIME.
I don't give a shit about what Nev says, he's a DT fanboy.
In short, Larry Wright>Jan Axel Von Blomberg>Mike Portnoy>Matte Modin>Dave Lombardo (LOL SAME BEAT FOR THE LAST 20 YEARS)
