On Friday, May 19th, 2006, a benefit concert was to be held at St. Mary's Parish Center in Manahawkin, NJ. The proceeds of this event, organized by Brianna Taylor, a 13 year-old girl with cerebral palsy, would have gone to the Sunshine Foundation.
With only a week till the event, two parish ministers were informed that one of the bands scheduled to perform was called Divinity Destroyed and displayed a sense of humor on their website they found disagreeable. Without making any attempt to understand the band's name and its members, they immediately cancelled the show.
Despite the pleadings of youth group members who helped schedule, book, and promote the show, their decision stood. A member of Divinity Destroyed then scheduled a meeting with the ministers, during which every misinterpretation was corrected and every misunderstanding clarified. Still, they chose to leave it cancelled to "preserve the integrity of their parish".
The event was expected to draw hundreds. By cancelling it, these men of the cloth turned their backs on the youth that looked up to them and successfully prevented thousands of dollars from reaching an organization that provides help to kids like Brianna.
We agree that their actions make little sense, lack reason and compassion, and that the show must go on!
