Also from the United States there is Bongripper. A band that I love with a passion. They play this amazing instrumental, progressive and massive doom metal. If you don't know them yet, I recommend starting with their release Satan Worshipping Doom, or maybe with Hippie Killer

A band who I've seen live twice (second time was with SLEEP) and they're also from my state. My friend nearly hit their bassist when we were going to the show. He was getting out of a van and about to walk onto the are wet when she turned a corner and was like a foot away from him.

I have yet to see them live, but I hope to do so one day. They have the reputation of being an awesome live band :)

They are pretty damn good live.
Also really fucking loud. Like I could barely hear after seeing them the first time. Not to mention the whole area remotely close to the stage was going kinda crazy. Second time wasn't as bad crowd wise because a lot of the crowd was pretty chill. First time they mostly played Miserable, Hail, and Hate Ashbury. Second time it was like 2 from SWD, 2 from Miserable, and Hate Ashbury I think. Would be nice to see just them live and playing something like Great Barrier Reefer or Heroin or something like that.
All the dudes in Bongripper hang out at the merch table before and after their sets (or at least they did when we saw em (was with a friend both times)) and I got the LAST copy they had of the beer with red splatter vinyl of that split they did with Conan. Second time I saw them I got this poster which was only limited to 3 different shows.

I'd love to see them play a lot of SWD and Hippie Killer. They are my favorite of their entire discography. But both The Great Barrier Reefer and Hate Ashbury are great two.
That poster looks cool, but it's a Sleep poster, not a Bongripper one. Did you confuse your links?

I'd say my favorites are either SWD or GBR. Followed closely by either Miserable or Heroine.

Nah. Probably should have been clear that it was a link for a Sleep poster not Bongripper. They didn't have any either time I saw em. I'd definitely buy one if possible.

No offense but... is funny the fact the OP make a "Metal hell" topic with a pony for avatar.
i'm taking recommendations. i've been listening to the same 20 or so bands for 15 years and i could use some new tunes. i like melodic stuff mostly, a la In Flames, Children of Bodom and the like. i've never delved too far out of the more popular stuff 'cause for the most part it's all pretty good.
if it has orchestral, choiral and/or electronic elements, that's a big plus, such as Cradle of Filth or Therion. i'd like some obscure recommendations 'cause i've heard most of the popular stuff.
i also like power metal.

A user managed to abuse a glitch on the website some time ago which allowed them to change peoples icons. That account has also had no activity on it since 2009/2010 time.
Anyone got any US (or Canadian) Death Metal recommendations? I've been listening to Obituary, Suffocation, Cryptopsy and Gorguts quite a bit.

I'm sorry that you don't believe the truth, but that's what happened. Go ahead. Look through the avatars of the people who started topics in this section of the forum and tell me how many of them have MLP avatars outside of maybe the one who started the MLP club.
I'll be waiting.

Yeah, there were also a lot of people getting Pokemon icons and some people with Conal's face. I changed my password then.
Anyone got any US (or Canadian) Death Metal recommendations? I've been listening to Obituary, Suffocation, Cryptopsy and Gorguts quite a bit.
For American death metal, Death and Atheist are awesome. For Canadian dm, there's Beyond Creation and First Fragment. Haven't heard First Fragment's debut full length, but the Afterthought Ecstasy is pretty sick. I believe @Heavenduff would recommend Quo Vadis, right? I trust his taste. Haven't checked them out, though.

Or were good I'm not even sure if they are still around...
Nah they're not. They broke up in like 2011.
There IS another band by that name from Poland though and THEY are still around.

If you like the melodic death metal kind of stuff, there are a few bands that I consider to be essentials, like Kalmah, for instance.
Kalmah - Heroes To Us
Kalmah - Hades
Kalmah - They Will Return
I also think that Nightrage is one of these bands you simply can't avoid. But with Nightrage, I recommend the earlier stuff, mostly from Descent Into Chaos and Sweet Vengeance
Nightrage - Hero
Nightrage - Poems
Nightrage - Being Nothing
If you like the stuff with clean vocals and harsh vocals harmonies, they've made some of this two
if it has orchestral, choiral and/or electronic elements, that's a big plus, such as Cradle of Filth or Therion. i'd like some obscure recommendations 'cause i've heard most of the popular stuff.
I know that people who like CoF also tend to like Carach Angren (I don't know them too well, so I won't recommend specific tracks) and they also like stuff like Abigail Williams, which I've listened to a lot back in the days. Good stuff!
Abigail Williams - I/The World Beyond
Abigail Williams - Empyrean: Into The Cold Wastes
i also like power metal.
If you like power metal as a whole, you probably already know of Sonata Arctica, Edguy and DragonForce. But you probably don't know about Labyrinth (or maybe you do :O). Italian power metal. Good stuff :)
Labyrinth - Heaven Denied
Labyrinth - Falling Rain
Labyrinth - Thunder

I'm going to follow-up on these recommendations and second Beyond Creation. Good stuff! And you're right Sense, I'd highly recommand Quo Vadis. They have indeed been broken up for quite a while now, but their albums Defiant Imagination and especially Day into Night are fucking amazing and worth listening to!
I'm also going to recommend Chthe'ilist, whom have been compared to Demilich with their first demo and first album. But the band itself seems to reject this but not because they don't like Demilich. They actually reject this because they find Demilich's work to be more inventive, ingenious and good, haha :P
Nader Sadek is also pretty good if you like darker stuff.

I do like Great Barrier Reefer, but since it's a one track album, I get far less opportunities to listen to it, because you obviously want to listen to the whole thing in one sitting.
So yeah, great album, but I don't listen to quite quite as often as Satan Worshipping Doom

I personally have too much time on my hands so I'm able to sit down and listen to stuff like that no problem all in one go. A lot of albums I like are one song and are between 30 minutes all the way to far eclipsing an hour in length.
I also have so much time that when I'm not busy for one reason or another I'm recording crap left and right and have legit amassed nearly 300 different recordings on my phone haha.
What's your opinion on Heroin? It both is and isn't a one track album. By that I mean if you want to get it anywhere it's cut up into pieces that all go together but it's one song.

I honestly do not know it very well, but I'll give it a few good listens whenever I feel like listening to some doom metal.
Because right now, like I probably stated a while ago, I've been on a huge Bolt Thrower trip lately, and I've bought a few of their records, including Warmaster, The IVth Crusade and these three:

Eh fair enough. Though it's not 100% the same vibe as the rest of their stuff. You'll get what I mean if/when you listen to it.

Oh yeah that reminds me. The new drummer of With the Dead is a former drummer of Bolt Thrower. If you weren't aware, they're a Doom Supergroup with Lee Dorian and Leo Smee from Cathedral, Timbagshaw from Electric Wizard, and Alex Thomas from Bolt Thrower. They were originally Lee, Tim, and Mark Greening but Mark suddenly was no longer in the band for...reasons?
been getting into symphony x a lot lately, love the classical influenced guitar playing from michael romeo.
