The first three albums are really just gems. They get more and more fun the more you listen. Possessed is ok, and after that, not much to look at. Temple of Ice, though not featuring Cronos, is pretty cool. Cast in Stone is also pretty good. But really, it doesn't get better than Black Metal. Go watch some 80's interviews of them, they're pretty goofy blokes. Go check out Midnight's album Farewell to Hell. Good Venom influenced Black n' Roll.
COUNTESSSSSSS.... BATHOORRYYYYYY
hmm...thanks for the advice from the...two people that said something about that
i guess i'll see if i can ask my sister to get the number off the flier the next time shes at where she saw it.
because she was at a music store (for guitars and stuff like that) and it was up on the wall...
i guess i'll keep ya posted as to if i go ahead and join them if they're somewhat decent and whatnot...

Venom - Black Metal
Bathory>Venom any day of the week. Their s.t was classic, and Blood Fire Death is a necksnapper unlike anything Venom has ever done, and also Metal Black was a shameless attempt to cash in on past successes. (Plus, Black Metal wasn't really black metal, it was just sped up heavy metal with crappier production and barked vocals)

Unless you give us any more information, I really don't see how we could recommand you to not join them or at least give it a try and jam with them a few times...

I only know that song because a friend of mine loves it. He has it on his droid and keeps plugging it into my speaker to play it.
DEATH IN THE SHAPE OF A PANZER BATTALION
I used to listen to their stuff, but not for a long time. It gets old really fast. The combined sillyness and cheesyness ends up taking way too much space compared to the song-writting skills and general quality of their music.
Also, I don't know about progressive sludge, but I listen to a lot of sludge. How about Zebulon Pike? You'd like them. good instrumental sludge metal.
Thanks for the recommandation :)

Both albums are certainly worth picking up! I prefer the second album as it has Pure and Think Not Forever. Shame there's been such a halt for them to work on their third album.

I only have Black Metal from Venom but all the albums I have from Bathory beat it by far. Blood Fire Death and Hammerheart are instant metal classics! As for that Metal Black, the fact that they have to name their album as something a tribute band would use is a shame.

I still agree with that.

Why can't I like both.

We talked about this a few weeks back, along with Sodom's Sign of Evil or whatever it was. I agree. Doesn't unmake Black Metal a classic for me.
(Plus, Black Metal wasn't really black metal, it was just sped up heavy metal with crappier production and barked vocals)
Yeah, but the production and aesthetics did proove influential. I still prefer Bathory, but Venom is fun too.
Either way, check out Midnight.
wait...How is in the Sign of Evil a cash grab?

Venom weren't original at all. They may have invented the name, but they weren't black metal -- they were NWOBHM, which couldn't be farther from black metal. They were like motorhead with satanic lyrics, not black metal. Black metal didn't exist until Bathory -- and yes, I know Venom were first, but let's make a checklist:
Extremely raw feel -- Venom were raw, but no raw-er than other heavy metal bands at the time. Bathory, check. Venom, no.
Screeched vocals -- Venom's were barked, making them more like Savatage and Motorhead than anything extreme. Bathory, check, Venom, no.
Fast paced -- Venom were faster than average, but there were plenty of thrash bands around at the time that were faster. Bathory, check. Venom, no.
Dark atmosphere -- Venom, again, may have had satanic lyrics, but their music is about as dark as rainbows and butterflies. Again, Bathory, check. Venom, no.
Venom were the grandfathers of black metal. They carved out an evolutionary line in metal, branching off from NWOBHM, but black metal didn't come to be until the thrash influence kicked in, i.e., with Bathory.
I've been into metal for going on 12 years now and I'm also in college and am used to analytical thinking and just finished Physical Anthropology, which is about evolution. Applying that kind of thinking to metal, and Venom may have spawned black metal, but were they themselves black metal? No. Listen to Black Metal, then listen to The Return... by Bathory.
I rest my case.
Ghoul is right. They called themselves black metal, but what they were really playing was more like heavy metal or speed metal.

Yeah, but if I sound heated, I'm not. I've been taking debate classes at the college so I can get on the debate team this fall. I did shit like this every tuesday and thursday.
Black metal or not, Venom's early trinity were pretty dope. Bathory was just way more inventive, daring, bold, and all these things we admire. He (Quorthon) was the lumberjack of the metal world.
In case of any tensed nerves here in the hell, and to provide comic relief, is a bunch of women cosplaying as Dethklok:

I tend to agree. I don't know them quite as much as you guys, but from what I've heard, they really are just an Heavy Metal band with a rawer sound and somewhat darker, more Hell and Satan oriented lyrical themes. They really aren't Black Metal, even though they may have created the name.
Maybe someday we'll have a genre named Battle Metal, who knows ?!
Not to say I agree with their opinions, but ask any one of the Scandanavian/Hellenic/Whatever veterans, and they will tell you Venom was the first black metal band. I was watching this documentry, and this guy (whom I think was Abbath) said something along the lines of "Many newer bands don't consider Venom a black metal band. I say fuck those bands".
But really, you don't forget the first time you listen to Bathory. Them/he and Tormentor (suprisingly unknown for a band that has Atilla on vocals) had Second wave down WAAAAAYYY before Norway. Mayhem was still a Venom cover band when they were churning out black metal.

Tormentor was cool, and they were among many that comprised the first wave of black metal.
And just for the fuck of it, here's what I think of Metallica:

Have Bathory - The Golden Walls of Heaven playing on repeat. Love that tremelo solo in the beginning.

Dies Irae off of that album was fucking killer neck pain. Love that album.
Right now, blasting Contradictions Collapse by Meshuggah. This was back when they were speed metal.

My take on Venom is that while they might have given a little boost to get black metal up and running, the true start of black metal is with Bathory and such. Now that I see as early black metal as opposed to Venom. Anyway, can't debate too much as I'm having a blast with the new Kreator album.

At least Cry Thunder is a good merit from them. Probably the best song of theirs yet.

I've listened to a couple tracks off YouTube, and it sounds pretty sweet. They have added a lot more melodic parts, but it works really well. And the thrash still kicks ass.
Proud Demon residing in the METAL HELL!
Lay down your soul for the god's rock n' roll!
dont know if anyone else heard but Candlemass have officially parted ways with Robert Lowe
they said the following:
"We are sorry to inform you that Robert Lowe is no longer the singer for Candlemass. It has been a very difficult decision for the band and has mainly to do with the quality of the live performances. For the upcoming shows, Robert will be replaced with Mats Leven [Yngwie Malmsteen, Therion, Treat, Adagio, At Vance, Krux], longtime friend of the band. We are convinced this will work out just great."
"The band is currently rehearsing new and old songs with Mats and we know that nobody attending the gigs at Debaser Slussen, Metaltown, Borås or Southern Discomfort will be disappointed."
"Bring you earplugs... It will be hard, massive and loud! Keyboard player Per Wiberg [Opeth, Spiritual Beggars] is also joining Candlemass onstage for the live shows."
