I looked at the numbers of votes and it's strange how Devin Townsend vs Sepultura has over 600 votes total and the others don't have nearly that much. Devin Townsend has 536 votes and the second highest band Iron Maiden has 178. Just kind of weird how there's such a large discrepancy.

Also:
1.) Because it's fun. Come on, don't lie. You enjoy doing these things as much as me.

Point of that changed when I found out that all the power metal bands were at the very start. So yeah, it's very power metal unfriendly which blows.

2.) Because the band that wins gets their ENTIRE discography reviewed in this site's magazine. Which is an awesome boost to the winner.

That actually sounds cool but if someone like Maiden ends up winning, then it's not going to feel that special since many have done Maiden discography reviews already.

At 20 hours ago, DeIirium wrote: Pretty pointless since the winner will end up being some big name like Iron Maiden or Metallica who have no use for that kind of promotion.

It's not a whole lot different to GameFAQs' Character Battles. All the big ones will always win while the small ones will never get their chance. At least with some contests like these there are those that have the decency to take out certain bands due to winning the whole thing previously. For this one, I'm going to guess Megadeth will win here.

A very cool thing to do would be to exclude the very popular an succesful bands from the contest right from the start. I'm not suggesting that bands like Blind Guardian, Symphony X and the likes shouldn't be in the competition, though. These bands are popular, but we can't just assume that they will win the contest easily. I'm suggesting bands like Iron Maiden, Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Black Sabbath and the likes would be excluded from the contest. These bands have a much wider fanbase then most of the other bands, they also have or had a huge commercial success and were all somewhat succesful in the mainstream.

Heidenfest line-up and dates confirmed. Wintersun are the main act and they miss out on the UK yet have 50% of the shows in Germany.

Excuse me while I tear my room apart.

So... i'm trooping out to New York City to see the "Death To All" tribute show to Chuck Schuldiner.

Some of the people performing include Paul Masvidal, Sean Reinert, Gene Hoglan, Steve DiGiorio, Bobby Koelble, Scott Clendenin and Shannon Hamm as well as "other special guests yet to be announced."

Pretty much one of the coolest concert opportunities ever.

DATES of the Death tribute tour:

June 22 - The Regency Ballroom - San Francisco, CA
June 23 - House of Blues âEU" West Hollywood, CA
June 26 - House of Blues - Chicago, IL
June 28 - Irving Plaza âEU" New York City, NY
June 30 - The Beacham - Orlando, FL

With seven European dates in the works.

So only twelve shows! Who am I seeing in New York City for this?

At this point I have to laugh whenever Jari says "Equipment still can't handle the massive project" or anything along those lines. The bigger joke was him struggling with his Mac to work on the album. In one way I believe 2012 will be the year we finally get Time but like hell I'm going to build my hopes up after being let down so many times.

Are you specifically looking for bands that are a mixture of black and death, or do you mean you're looking for either death or black metal?

For now, I'll give you recommendations for the former. If you want black metal or death metal, let me know.

Speaking of grunge-metal, the Melvins are comin' by soon, and I'll likely see em' soon. But the venue is known for hecklers, and when the Melvins get heckled, they play their noise material at extreme decibels until the hecklers leave. I don't mind noise, but I don't wanna wate concert time/risk hearing damage listening to it. Also, new Melvins album coming soon (no link, sorry).

For some reason, I can't see the poll. I've tried two computers and all I get is a blank screen. Did Napalm Death win? I realize they had the job of competing with Cynic, but I like Utilitarian way more than Carbon Based Anatomy.

Better tell us what you already know of both genres, so we know where to start. Both of these genres are huge and have many subgenres. I don't want to make many recommandations for various subgenres if you end up hating it all.

Also, if you find it hard to appreciate the rawer or more brutal aspects of both genres, that could also be a good thing to mention.

The metal gods have answered my prayers! Manilla Road will finally play a show in the UK. HOWEVER, they are playing during the same weekend as the Jubilee and my sister intended to come up here to see family so this will be a tricky situation. However, it's fucking Manilla Road, I must see them!

Response to Metal Hell 2012-03-19 01:40:39

Round Three of Thrash Mag's March Metal Madness as been setted

Megadeth against The Devin Townsend Project
Cannibal Corpse versus Decrepit Birth
Children Of Bodom versus Nile
Napalm Death against Swashbuckle (yup... they actually won against Testament...)
Obscura (they won against Suffocation... the fuck?) versus Lamb Of God
Opeth versus Behemoth
Kreator against Iron Maiden
Decapitated versus Slayer.

To be honest... I'm dissapointed.

My final four at the beginning of Round One were :

Megadeth
Cynic
Mastodon
Dark Tranquillity

as you guys know... some of my favorites were eliminated right from the start...
I actually can't belive Cynic were eliminated and very soon two. Did people really just forget about Focus? I'm seriously stunned. Napalm Death cannot win to Cynic... seriously...

So, at the beginning of Round Two I had chosen a different final four for obvious reasons.

They were :

Megadeth
Children Of Bodom
Mastodon
Suffocation

And now what?

At DT and Cynic were eliminated during the first round, and now Mastodon and Suffocation got pulled out two.

Now what? Well, my final four will have to be...

Megadeth (of course)
Children Of Bodom
Iron Maiden (And I really didn't feel like having them in my final four)
Opeth (sadly... not because they suck, but I don't really like them that much, but against Behemoth, Lame Of God and Obscura, they really can't lose. I hope, at least).

I really hoped it wouldn't end like this. Now we only have commercial bands, old bands, and "succesful out of the metal scene" bands. Round Three really doesn't please me...

Everyone: Yeah, you're right, I better see all your asses in New York City on June 28th for Death To All!

Duffy:

My votes, even though voting hasn't been enabled yet.

The Devin Townsend Project > Megadeth
(Seriously, fuck post-Youthanasia Megadeth)

Decrepit Birth > Cannibal Corpse
(Since people had to be fags and vote these two bands over Bolt Thrower and Bloodbath)

Nile > Children of Boredom
(Fuck those posers in CoB, they're pretty much the main reason metalcore exists in the first place)

Napalm Death > Swashbuckle
(Obviously)

Obscura > Lamb of God
(Because Obscura is fucking awesome)

Opeth > Behemoth
(Obviously)

Kreator >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Iron Maiden
(If Kreator doesn't win this round, i'll cry.)

Decapitated > Slayer
(Might as well support Decapitated, even if they're not going to win)

Did people really just forget about Focus?

Yeah, they were too busy remembering how awesome and influential Napalm Death was at their start as well. ;)

To be fair, Napalm Death no longer create interesting music - but at least they're still metal. Ever since Cynic reformed, they haven't really been metal. Sure there's some harsh vocals and some tech. death esque riffing on TiA, but that's more BTBAM worship than actual metal. I know a lot of people who have turned their back on Cynic purely because they're NOT a metal band anymore, but just another prog. rock band now.

As for Dark Tranquility, in 2012, no one gives a shit about them now. At all. Seriously. Not saying that's right, just that it's a miracle they made the final 64 in the first place.

At DT and Cynic were eliminated during the first round, and now Mastodon and Suffocation got pulled out two.

Mastodon: They went up against Iron Maiden. Of course they wouldn't win. (Which is why you SHOULDN'T vote Iron Maiden over Kreator, seriously. Don't do it)

Suffocation: To be fair, it ended with Obscura having 52% and Suffocation having 48% - so that one WAS quite close. I think Obscura ultimately won because of underdog votes, cause that's what Obscura are. The modern death metal underdog that everyone loves to love, understandably so. (Along with Revocation and Fleshgod Apocalypse)

Megadeth
Children Of Bodom
Iron Maiden
Opeth
I really hoped it wouldn't end like this. Now we only have commercial bands, old bands, and "succesful out of the metal scene" bands. Round Three really doesn't please me...

To be fair - Napalm Death, The Devin Townsend Project, Nile, Decapitated and Obscura are all very in this. If you'd rather vote for Iron Maiden, Children of Boredom, Opeth and Megadouche over underdogs then you're just nitpicking.

My hopeful final four:
The Devin Townsend Project
Napalm Death
Obscura
Kreator

Also, i'm very tempted to add you on facebook cause I see your comment. hehe

Opeth - Haxprocess

I like both, but I'm okay with it. Cynic has like two albums, a few demos and an EP. Napalm Death has a massive discography that is often overlooked for the first two albums.

Manilla Road have quite a month in June. Now that they will be playing in London, I feel a lot less desperate to go over to America for a live show, even though I'm still missing out on many other great bands. Still, having Manilla Road here makes up for the drybone year for metal shows this year in the UK.

The Devin Townsend Project > Megadeth
(Seriously, fuck post-Youthanasia Megadeth)

I too will vote DTP over Megadeth. Of course, Megadeth will probably win this but Devin deserves a chance for sure.

Megadeth against The Devin Townsend Project

As much as I love early Megadeth and some of their later stuff, The Devin Townsend Project's four albums are all godly. I'll have to vote DTP.

Cannibal Corpse versus Decrepit Birth

Don't really like Cannibal Corpse and I know nothing about Decrepit Birth....so, abstain.

Children Of Bodom versus Nile

Nile all the way. I enjoy CoB first 3 albums, but Nile has so much better stuff.

Napalm Death against Swashbuckle (yup... they actually won against Testament...)

I'd probably have to go with Swashbuckle because the only Napalm Death album I enjoy is their debut.

Obscura (they won against Suffocation... the fuck?) versus Lamb Of God

Obscura easy. They are very solid tech death.

Opeth versus Behemoth

I do enjoy myself some Behemoth...but Opeth has Still Life. I'm voting Opeth.

Kreator against Iron Maiden

I got to go with Iron Maiden because they are my all time fav metal band. But Kreator is sooo good. Just crappy luck to run into Maiden.

Decapitated versus Slayer.

Hmm. Decapitated had Winds of Creation which was awesome. And Nihility which was awesome....but the rest? Not so much. Slayer's first five all kick ass, so I got to go with Slayer on this one.

What's the big deal with following this poll? It's a waste of time. Of course the biggest bands are going to be voted for. Of course jizz in a sock metal like Obscura will be voted for over Suffocation. Man, looking at these choices, honestly I wouldn't vote for either band in most of the choices since they're both equally bad.

DTP (It's not that Mustaine decided to be Christian, it's that he's decided to become a Nazi)
Cannibal Corpse (I don't like that either that much, but CC has a larger discography)
Abstain (COB vs. Nile)
Napalm Death (as I said, huge discography. Giing people insight beyond Scum would be amazing)
Abstain (I really want to kick Obscura out for getting Suffo kicked, but that would mean voting for LOG)
Can't decide if I'll abstain or Opeth
Kreator (Iron Maiden shouldn't win)
Decapitated (I would abstain, but for the sake of hope, wake up Covan!)
