Because of what I said after that. I liked them when I saw them live. But I don't like their studio material. This is strange, isn't it?

I'm like that with some bands.

Epica's 2009 and 2007 albums were both amazing.

Their first two albums, The Phantom Agony and Consign To Oblivion are both REALLY mih on recording - but the songs translate really well live.

I recommend downloading "We Will Take You With Us" - it's most of The Phantom Agony and some other songs recorded live in a studio with a legitimate orchestra and no added effects - so much better than The Phantom Agony album itself.

Epica - The Last Crusade

I just bought almost the entire Isis discography today. Feels good man.

Is it me, or does thrash get no love in this place? And most metal forums in general? It seems after that new wave of Thrash Metal stuff was dispersed/dismantled, it seems nobody's really talked about it.

So, are there any new good thrash or death/thrash bands out that I should know of (that aren't Vektor)?

Also, Sodom is fucking awesome.

Also, I know Bahamut said we weren't to further discuss Bill's departure, but it's kinda bugging me. Do you guys think he''s gone for good? Will he come back, will he stay away, will he become a lurker? I've always been fond of reading his posts, hearing what the old wise man had to say. Despite the way he treated Duff and the rest of you disagreeing to his proposition, I still feel as though he's a kind person, and thinking of a Hell without him kinda sucks. I haven't been here for more than a year (at least as a regular poster), so do you guys know him well enough to determine if he will come back or not?

why do they have to be new?

I guess old will do. When I ask for old, I've usually heard it. But if you think you got some old obscure stuff, be my guest.

Thanks fellow Lovecraftian, Havok is a band I've accidentally overlooked for a long time now. Lisstening to em' now, pretty good shit.

Also, black/thrash is pretty cool too.

Toxik, if you don't mind clean vocals.

Toxik are in no way new, and very well known, but knowing somebody listens to and enjoys such an amazing band is enough for me. Also, I don't see how one can dislike clean vocals. I can understand hating them if they are bad or don't fit, but I've never heard of somebody who hates clean vocals as a whole.

I only read the 'new' part after I posted, and I warned about the clean vocals because you also asked for death thrash, I thought maybe you'd prefer harsher vocals or something, vocals as clean as Toxik seem pretty rare in thrash metal. Also, Toxik don't seem to be mentioned a lot, i've always assumed they're pretty underground.

Have you listened to their album 'World Circus'? I've only listened to Think This because it's so good that I don't think anything else of theirs could top it.

It's not as good as Think This, but it's worth a listen. Also, check this Toxik song that never made it past the demo stage.

China has become a lot more musically tolerant within the past decade. I can name off probably ten metal or shoegaze bands who have toured in china within the past three years.

Naturally this also means more bands coming from China, albeit hard to find the music due to a lack of record labels or internet promotion.

This was something I found, a super amazing Chinese gem - anyone here who is a fan AT ALL of either black metal or shoegaze should definitely listen to this piece of art.

To further emphasize this: GET THIS.

1.) They use an actual professional orchestra, instead of the dull-sounding amateurs on their debut album.
2.) Vocally it's far superior. Both Simone Simons and Mark Jansen sound SO MUCH better than on the original recording of the album.
3.) The mix is overall much better - so the guitars/drums don't overpower the orchestra, vocals, bass and keyboards.

At 1/2/12 08:01 PM, Tobi wrote: I just bought almost the entire Isis discography today. Feels good man.

Isis are pretty awesome. They should be way more popular. Also, they shouldn't have disbanded - they're from my fucking state and I still never got to see them.

Is it me, or does thrash get no love in this place? And most metal forums in general? It seems after that new wave of Thrash Metal stuff was dispersed/dismantled, it seems nobody's really talked about it.

Thrash metal, oldschool death metal and 80's/90's hardcore tends to have the same fanbase: Thrashers.

Thrashers typically have archetypes about how the internet sucks and forum's are a waste of time.

I know tons of thrashers in person and I think I only know one who posts on forums.

So, are there any new good thrash or death/thrash bands out that I should know of (that aren't Vektor)?

Some newer bands i've noticed:

Cavalera Conspiracy <3
Mantic Ritual <3
Evile
Lich King <3
Lazarus A.D.
Bonded By Blood
Municipal Waste <3
Toxic Holocaust
Gama Bomb
Warbringer
Warpath
Immaculate
Havok <3
Holy Grail
Thrash Or Die <3
Witchburner
Razormaze <3
Witchaven <3
Skeletonwitch

These aren't all straight up thrash. I'd argue that Municipal Waste, Toxic Holocaust and Gama Bomb are all closer to punk than metal. Holy Grail are called "traditional metal" even if I beg to differ. Skeletonwitch, Witchburner, Witchaven, etc. being blackened thrash or something like that. Lazarus A.D. being groovish, but not quite groove metal.

I put a <3 by all the bands i'm particularly fond of. So far, Vektor is easily my favorite modern thrash metal band though.

Also, Sodom is fucking awesome.

Of course.

Okay, I will have a look into that, thanks!

On an unrelated side note: I just discovered "MotorJesus". They are billed for the next Rock Hard Festival. While they play more Hard Rock than Metal, they still are pretty good.

Motorjesus - Legion of Rock
Motorjesus - Fist of the Dragon
Motorjesus - Wheels of Purgatory
Motorjesus - King Of The Dead End Road (live) - That guy with the cow bell rocks!

I know most of these bands already, but I'll check the ones I don't know. Either way, it's good to see I'm getting plenty of recs.

I don't think straight up thrash even exists. Some people think of it as hardcore with some metal traits, others think of it as metal with hardcore traits, some think it varies, blah blah.

So far, Vektor is easily my favorite modern thrash metal band though.

That's because Vektor IS the best Modern thrash band.

Also, everybody should check out Believer and Tourniquet. Pretty good Prog thrash, that just so happens to be Christian as well. Proves that lyrical tendencies don't determine the quality of music.

Looks like he's created a second Metal Hell on Facebook. I don't have a Facebook account, so I can't see it, sadly. I may have to make one.

I know core isn't something that shouldn't be talked about excessively, but what do you guys think of that so called "blackcore" band, Abigail Williams? I just listened to them today, and they aren't that bad, though I don't exactly like them much.
Their album "In the Shadow of a Thousand Suns" is actually pretty good. Do you guys think they are -core music, or falsey labled such as early Cave In and BTBAM? They almost never chug, and vocals are some sort of hybrid of black metal and -core.

Also, do you guys think blackcore will become a new trend?

I know Duff will want to talk about them, since he's the guy who got me into them, but I'm going to beat him to the punch. I frickin love em. I don't really feel they have that many core elements, I feel like they are bascially just Symphonic Black Metal, like Dimmu Borgir (except better). I wish there were more bands like Abigail Williams, cuz they kick a lot of ass.

Just wanna say that when I saw Stephen Brodsky supporting Scott Kelly at a solo acoustic show he referred to early Cave In as emocore. If he labels his own band that way I'm not inclined to argue with him. He also added that was before 'they' [bands around that time period] took off the core and changed their sound.

He could be joking, making fun of the people who insulted Antenna. But hell I don't know. I don't hear much emo in it, but if he wants to associate it with his music, okay. Besides, this was back in the time of Midwestern emo, when most of it was actually pretty good.

Design Your Universe and The Divine Conspiracy are both amazing albums, yo. I definitely recommend them.

Consign To Oblivion is decent. (The Last Crusade is one of the best metal songs ever made)

The Phantom Agony is just awful because of the horribly amateur orchestra they recorded it with and the fact the guitars/drums overpower EVERYTHING in the mix. But these are both fixed in the We Will Take You With Us DVD, which is basically just that album re-recorded in entirety as I said earlier.

Epica is perhaps the only band I know that's gotten better and better each album AS WELL AS more popular at the same time. The upcoming album will be a masterpiece, i'm predicting. And hopefully, it will be the album that breaks them into the super-mainstream.

Yeah, it's entirely a joke because every single member of Lich King, besides their vocalist, either is or has been in a black metal band at one point or another.

It's entirely a self-parody.
