I actually wouldn't mind discussing Metallica once in a blue moon.
They, very surprisingly, almost never come up in here.

It's because everybody is afraid to admit liking them. Because s/he fears everybody will respond with: "LOL GET OUT YOU FUCKING MANISTREAM SUCKER OLOLOL!"
That being said, I love Metallica.
Yeah, metallica hating is such a trend.
The trends of metallica went:
"METALLICA IS AWESOME" (80's)
"METALLICA IS LESS AWESOME NOW, BUT THEY WERE MORE AWESOME BEFORE" (early/mid 90's)
"METALLICA SUCK NOW, BUT THEY WERE AWESOME ONCE" (late 90's)
"METALLICA ARE SUCH FUCKING DICKS, BUT THEY WERE GREAT IN THE 80'S" (early/mid 00's)
"METALLICA ALWAYS SUCKED" (now)
I love all of their 80's stuff. And the black album and death magnetic are both decent. My opinion.
I strongly dislike Metallica.
It's just no contest between them and Megadeth.
I'm going to have to agree.
The first four metallica albums were awesome.
The first six megadeth albums were awesome.
But if I had to chose between the first four metallica albums or the first six megadeth albums, i'd easily chose the metallica ones.
Both bands suck now though. hahaha

No, we are just going over the same boring and never-ending Megadeth VS Metallica debate.
Let's not compare the two please... I'd like us to look at Metallica's work without the usual references to Megadetht and how better or worst they are.

So basically, you COULD listen to lot more.
Especially considering all power, death and black metal all started off as thrash.
And even bands like type o negative, or groove metal bands like exhorder and pantera, were all heavily thrash influenced at one point or another...
Anyone heard of Dragonland? They were in the suggestion window for a Symphony X song.

But either way, amazing band. I particularly enjoy Starfall, but all their albums are good.

I don't care much for Torche. I don't like their style of sludge. And I definitely consider sludge metal to be genuine, legitimate metal. Actually, I'd say it's "more metal" than a lot of other metal. Lesbian is one of the metallest of the metal, the way I see it.

They're definitely an acquired taste. I dig 'em. And I'm pretty sure Idio likes them. I could not bring myself to understand their appeal when I first listened to them a few years ago, but I appreciate them now. I think they come up with some interesting sounds. If you don't dig the weirdness, you might still like Phormula. It's a little less avan-garde and a little more metal.

They're just obnoxious sounding. All harsh vocals are.
But you just said you liked Rotting Christ and Goatwhore. And didn't you say that you like Lesbian, and a bunch of other sludge bands with harsh vocals? But have you heard Bathory or Blood Fire Death? If you like thrashy, old school black metal, those albums should be right up your alley. They're quite good.

Again, don't fall into the stereotypes... Most bands are not satanic...
Yeah, that's bullshit. That became a common misconception because of the church burnings. People thought they were worshiping Satan, but if you actually bothered to listen to these people, it was because they were fed up with how lost their culture was thanks to Christianity. If you're going around saying that most black metal is satanic, you might as well go around saying most of it is racist National Socialist propaganda. In fact, I'm pretty well convinced that most so called "satanist black metal bands" are just using that as an image and don't believe in it one bit.
Still I do occasionally throw up the horns and yell "SATAN!" just cuz. I mean really, why be a Satanist when all that does is show that not only are you actually naive enough to believe in a Christian god, but are dumb enough to think that Satan would be your best pal when you go to hell? I'm talking about actual Satan-worshipping examples of fine genetic code, of course. real pieces of work.
You know, sometimes I think the world would be so much better if religion was completely abondoned by everybody on the planet and it was looked down on by everybody and seen for the silly archaic coping mechanism that it really is. But then, I think, holy shit can you imagine all those people who ask the asinine question "How can you be good without god? Where do you get your morals?" suddenly not believing in their god all at the same time. Who knows what kind of crazy shit would go down then. There's your fucking rapture.
Believe me dude, if I was in a Black Metal band, I'd do it just for the kicks.
If I were to do that, I think I'd try to come up with a style that stands out and looks at least a little unique and different from the usual face paint. Gorgoroth, for example, have a pretty unique style of corpse paint, in my opinion, and it looks crazy.

Pretty much how I feel as well. Overall, I like how they aren't afraid to dabble and experiment, yet still manage to remain true to their traditional sound. They never seem to cut roots, but always grow out of them,
However, I will say that Playground of the Damned is one of the more stranger albums for sound production so this will easily turn off new listeners. Anyone who wants to try out Manilla Road should not start with this album.
Kinda depends on this one. It seems most metalheads discover Manilla Road long after they develop from their traditional roots. By the time they listen to them, they usually are also listening to the more extreme genres. Some of them will have a firm stance in their favorite genre.
Manilla Road, having a pretty and varied discography, could appease to most metalheads, regardless of stance. Playground, Voyager, and Atlantis Rising, being Manilla's darker albums, (The 2000+ disography as a whole would likely appease them) would be a great entry point for the black/death metal lover. Chances are they won't care about the production, because they are used to far worse. Gates of Fire, The Deluge, and Spiral Castle would probably be good entry points for thrash lovers, being the some of the fastest Manilla albums. Mark of the Beast is great for prog metal fans, and Crystal Logic seems to be best for people who don't really like metal (Mark of the Beast would work equally well). The 1980-1985 material will please most traditional/power/NWOBHM fans. Theres even more albums I forgot to mention, and that would make better examples than what I chose, but that just comes to show you how meaty Manilla's discography is.
I don't think any one album is better or worse for reeling in new fans. It depends on the person's tastes. Just be sure to tell them that no one album defines the band.

Is it that you appreciate the instrumentals enough to tolerate the vocals? I was that way for a bit when I started getting to the heavier side of metal. The first time I can recall actually enjoying hearing the sound of harsh vocals was when I was listening to Agalloch for the first time. Also, I very much disagree. There are very many awesome bands with great agressive vocals.
I tolerate the vocals, yes. I used to LOVE harsh vocals for a short time back in like 2006/2007, but now i'm just so god damn tired of them. And all of them too, not a certain type.
Even though I dislike the vocals persay, I do think harsh vocals FIT in most of the bands that use them that I enjoy. So it helps the toleration process go smoother. :P
I know several people will disagree, but I actually recommend Blackwater Park, even if just for the Drapery Falls. I think it's one of their best songs. I also recommend Stlll Life because I also consider the Moor the be one of their best songs. This isn't coming from a big fan, though. I think they're decent, but kinda boring and mostly forgettable.
The Drapery Falls is the only Opeth song I find "100% boring" hahaha

...wut?
Also, Atheist.
People always view Atheist as "technical death metal" but that honestly only describes their newest album. I like to think of them as "Death, if Death were even better"
Also, Cynic's debut album along with their demos are fucking phenomenal.
Both atheist and cynic are more well recognized among prog fans then oldschoold death metal fans for some reason, so I thought i'd recommend them.
What do you think of Night of the Shape. It's completely non-metal, but awesome. It's one of my favorite songs by them.
It's pretty good, I haven't found any wizard songs I dislike yet. haha
You should definitely consider getting Album of the Year. I think Strip Search is probably their best song ever. Though I guess it appeals more to the stoner crowd. I dunno, but it's very chill shit and I never get tired of it.
Will do.

Also, you should check out this old school Chilean thrash metal band Disaster. Criaturas del Mal is their only album, but it's sick. Real, mean, aggressive thrash metal.
Will do, I actually haven't heard of them.
I mainly only like 80's/90's thrash. But the 00's have SOME good bands too. Vektor. <3
youthanasia is underrated.
AGREED. It's probably my second favorite megadeth album behind rust in peace.
it's such a good album.

Oh. My. God.
There are SO many bands that start with S, I seriously fucking love you for picking savatage. :D
Ride the Lightning > Master of Puppets
...And Justice For All > every other metallica album
Type O Negative - Some Stupid Tomorrow

However, I will want to say this:
Ride the Lightning > Master of Puppets
Does Master of Puppets have Fight Fire with Fire or For Whom the Bell Tolls? Seriously, Ride the Lightning is an easy top 5 contender for my personal favourite metal albums.
No, but Master of Puppets has Orion and Welcome Home (Sanitarium). Orion easily beats Call of Kthulu (even though the latter one is still an awesome instrumental) and Welcome Home (Sanitarium) is one of my favorite songs from Metallica.
But yes, overall Ride the Lightening is a better album. That's why it's my most favorite Metallica album and my most favorite metal album of all time.
If we're talking about thrash ima throw a cool thrash/death band out there, Revocation. I think they're really good, I especially like the guitar work.

I don't see how in the hell you could call them "thrash" in any way.
But yes, Revocation are an awesome death metal band.
They're actually from near where I live and I actually remember when they were considered a local band, not a signed touring band. hahaha

I think we had a similar argument about this before, I'm not going into it again.

If you want me to pick out a specific part the section starting at 1:26 is quite clearly thrash.
I know they're not metal, but does anyone here like Primus? I've been listening to them a bit on youtube and they're fucking awesome. haha
