I don't have a problem with bands trying different styles of music.
I'm for the idea of metal bands experimenting with different styles of music as well but some ideas simply don't work such as Megadeth's Risk and of course, Morbid Angel's new album. I do want to see bands experimenting with other genres in a good way and if anyone has a great example, FIRE AWAY!
While we're on the subject of those two albums, although Megadeth's Risk was a bad album, I can at least give them credit for giving it a shot just the one time and only taking two years to release it. Dave realised it wasn't a great attempt for the band considering the feedback and went back to the former roots, even though it lead to the departure of Marty Friedman. Morbid Angel on the other hand, they take eight years to release an album that incorporate techno and industrial elements with death metal in the wrong way and Trey isn't giving a single fuck about the criticism. Although it's good that he's standing to his own music, musicians have to realise what's good and bad for the fans.

lol at female fronted metal tag just for having one song with female vocals.
Their bassist is female. And I thought the bassist is at the back of the band, not the front.
Hah, how could I forget they had a woman in the band? I did see the band live at Heidenfest last year.

All three of which happening this september/october. Anyone here who doesn't go to at least two of those shows and is here in the states or is duff, is a douche by default. :D
Good thing I'm not in the states, haha. Not that I'd avoid these shows since I really want to see Ghost live and their only appearance in the UK right now is at Download. I feel I'm booked enough already with live shows in 2011.

I don't mind seing bands explore different genres, of course I don't. But I hate it when they follow the trends to try to stay cool forever. Like Metallica did with St.Anger, like Megadeth did with Risk, like Helloween did with Chameleon... it just seems that they have to try to stay cool, so they try copying shitty nu-metal or hard rock bands...
What the fuck? Helloween's Chameleon was in NO way, shape or form an attempt to stay "mainstream" - if you actually listened to it you would realize that it was way too complicated and proggie to be liked by pop kids and OBVIOUSLY isn't metal enough to be liked by metalheads.
From what I read with Weikath's interview regarding this album, he wanted the band to try and make a "Beatles album". I know it sounds absurd and even Weikath admits that but it does state that in the booklet notes on the Chameleon re-release. The main problem with Chameleon was the timing for writing this album. After the commercial failure with Pink Bubbles, the safe route for the band would have been something that could capture the magic from both Keepers albums. An album like Chameleon is best saving for when the band feeels stable enough and can afford to take a risk with a different style as a one off.
And also, that album was a masterpiece. It's nothing like their 80's stuff, sure, but it's still amazing.
Now that's one thing we can agree with regarding Helloween. Well, maybe I don't think the album is a masterpiece but I still think it has some merit. I did write a review for it four years back but now I'd probably rate it lower (gave it 80% on Metal-Archives).
