Want to find an album like Sagas but I don't know if I want to just go right into more Equilibrium or try looking elsewhere like Ensiferum.
I am curious as to what Fahrtwind sounds like

Hah, if Nevermore was ridiculously bad to you, I'm curious about your thoughts on Too Extreme!

Their latest album does have some good songs but it definitely pales in comparison to Sagas. Even their long instrumental Kurzes Epos is like Mana's rejected brother.
lol at female fronted metal tag just for having one song with female vocals.

I seriously loled XD
Also, I see you guys discussing Morbid Angel. I really don't know a lot of their music, but I know them by reputation. And quite frankly, I'm dissapointed when I read the stuff you guys write. I don't expect much from a band I don't listen to... most of the time. But legends of Death Metal, just aren't allowed to use electronic and industrial elements in their music... I really don't understand why all the 80's metal bands have to go through a bad period, during which they release poppy and/or shitty and/or nu-metal and/or generic hard rock influenced chug-chug metal...
I don't have a problem with bands trying different styles of music. I actually like the albums that Slayer has released during the 21st century, for example.
Morbid Angel just kind of failed at whatever they were trying to do with their new album.

I don't mind seing bands explore different genres, of course I don't. But I hate it when they follow the trends to try to stay cool forever. Like Metallica did with St.Anger, like Megadeth did with Risk, like Helloween did with Chameleon... it just seems that they have to try to stay cool, so they try copying shitty nu-metal or hard rock bands...

Opeth/katatonia tour

All three of which happening this september/october. Anyone here who doesn't go to at least two of those shows and is here in the states or is duff, is a douche by default. :D

Don't get us wrong, their first few albums are amazing.1

What the fuck? Helloween's Chameleon was in NO way, shape or form an attempt to stay "mainstream" - if you actually listened to it you would realize that it was way too complicated and proggie to be liked by pop kids and OBVIOUSLY isn't metal enough to be liked by metalheads.
And also, that album was a masterpiece. It's nothing like their 80's stuff, sure, but it's still amazing.

I'm for the idea of metal bands experimenting with different styles of music as well but some ideas simply don't work such as Megadeth's Risk and of course, Morbid Angel's new album. I do want to see bands experimenting with other genres in a good way and if anyone has a great example, FIRE AWAY!
While we're on the subject of those two albums, although Megadeth's Risk was a bad album, I can at least give them credit for giving it a shot just the one time and only taking two years to release it. Dave realised it wasn't a great attempt for the band considering the feedback and went back to the former roots, even though it lead to the departure of Marty Friedman. Morbid Angel on the other hand, they take eight years to release an album that incorporate techno and industrial elements with death metal in the wrong way and Trey isn't giving a single fuck about the criticism. Although it's good that he's standing to his own music, musicians have to realise what's good and bad for the fans.

Hah, how could I forget they had a woman in the band? I did see the band live at Heidenfest last year.

Good thing I'm not in the states, haha. Not that I'd avoid these shows since I really want to see Ghost live and their only appearance in the UK right now is at Download. I feel I'm booked enough already with live shows in 2011.

From what I read with Weikath's interview regarding this album, he wanted the band to try and make a "Beatles album". I know it sounds absurd and even Weikath admits that but it does state that in the booklet notes on the Chameleon re-release. The main problem with Chameleon was the timing for writing this album. After the commercial failure with Pink Bubbles, the safe route for the band would have been something that could capture the magic from both Keepers albums. An album like Chameleon is best saving for when the band feeels stable enough and can afford to take a risk with a different style as a one off.
And also, that album was a masterpiece. It's nothing like their 80's stuff, sure, but it's still amazing.
Now that's one thing we can agree with regarding Helloween. Well, maybe I don't think the album is a masterpiece but I still think it has some merit. I did write a review for it four years back but now I'd probably rate it lower (gave it 80% on Metal-Archives).
Really getting into lux Occulta, any reccomendations?
Also, even though they may not be 100% metal, you should check out Nachtreich. Violin metal I tell ye.
You guys should watch this cover of Blood and Thunder. It's totally awesome.

Heathen Foray-Messenger Of God.
Pretty Good stuff. Reminds me of Amon Amarth... which for some reason is not well liked here.
Fuckers...

Dream Theater called their new album A Dramatic Turn of Events.... That's a dumb title, even if it's referring to the recent events with the band.

Yeah, you caught me off guard there. I was wondering why it was a Meshuggah cover and not a Mastodon cover. :P
Tomorrow I'm off to the Rock Hard Festival. YAY! I'm going to see Bullet and Iced fucking Earth! :D

You get to see Iced Earth on one of it's last shows with Barlow. I'm jealous as fuck.

Probably because Amon Amarth has musical talent similar to that of Green Day.

This.
I wouldn't say they are terrible... but they are overrated... They are the band that melodeath kiddies listen to when they want to feel Viking and badass. They don't dare getting wet and try to find real Folk Metal band, or they simply don't have the capacity to appreciate folk metal.

It fits, though. I saw one of the first shows after Matt returned and now one of the last shows before he leaves again.
I know some pretty atrocious band names.
Like We Butter The Bread With Butter.
And Seppuku With A Straw.
Lucky, I never got to see IE with barlow. i saw them with ripper back in '05, but that was it.

Most real folk metal sucks too dude. Primordial is one of the few that REALLY stands out.

Hey guys, haven't posted here in a while.
I'm posting now to ask you guys for bands that are similar to Dark Funeral and Gorgoroth, since those are my top 2 favorite black metal bands. I've been trying to do some research but I haven't come up with anything good. I trust you guys will be able to recommend me better things.
At 6/8/11 07:55 PM, AniMetal wrote: Most real folk metal sucks too dude. Primordial is one of the few that REALLY stands out.
Sorry... I think my buddies Agalloch, Borknagar, Empyrium, Enslaved, Equilibrium, Finsterforst and Mägo de Oz disagree with you, and they have very good arguments to support their point... so I guess I will have to go against you on this one.
My Favorite bands are.Pantera,Hatebreed,Five Finger Death Punch,Metallica,Kataklysm,Lamb Of God,Down,Arch Enemy.

Just Bullet, yes? Anyway, enjoy your time!

From your list, six of them qualify for this place. The only two that don't meet our standards here are Hatebreed and Five Finger Death Punch. Please let us know of four more metal bands you listen to.

And Im sure by " they have very good arguments to support their point " you really mean your own opinion. Anyway, playing a god damn steel string guitar does not make you folk. If people actually listened to real folk you would know this.

No, I mean they are obviously creative, unique, skilled, talented, inspired. Have I mentionned creative? No, these words are not subjective. Agalloch are far more creative then other bands. Why? Because they can mix elements from Black Metal, Post-Rock, Neofolk, Doom Metal, Gothic Rock and Folk Metal. Plus, they take influences from countless artists, and write very unique and inspired lyrics.
So yeah, when some generic band, write generic music, with generic song progressions, generic lyrics and generic time signatures, I can easily say that Agalloch are a better band than Amon Amarth. But hey, you don't have to have good tastes, you know. Some people actually do enjoy generic music without deeper research for a unique and new sound. That's totally fine with me... but I don't think that the qualities I have listed are "subjective".
And I fail to understand the last part of your post. Are you saying that the folk metal bands I have listed are not really folk?
If These Trees Could Talk - Above The Earth
Have you ever listened to folk? REAL folk music? Agalloch is about 1% folk.
