2. Early Anathema
3. Mourning Beloveth
4. Septic Flesh
5. October Tide

Do you guys think that Katatonia and Agalloch would count as Doom Metal?

Early Katatonia? yes. other than that, nope.

are my favorites. Any other recommandations?

For doom metal? listen to what I listed. ;)

Excellent release. Really like the slow song shifting. The Great Barrier Reefer is still their best release imo.

What are your favorite Doom Metal bands?

In no order: (Hopefuly sludge counts too)
Ufomamut
Electric Wizard
Ahab
Orange Goblin
Reverend Bizarre
Acid Bath
Boris
Ocean Cheif
The Puritan
High on Fire
Bongripper
Weedeater

And I'm starting to get into:
Reverend Bizarre

Awesome.

High On Fire

I suggest looking into Surrounded by Theives and Blessed Black Wings first.

Do you guys think that Katatonia and Agalloch would count as Doom Metal?

Katatonia yes, Agalloch, no.

Earth

Only 2 releases are really doom at all. I actuall prefer the newer stuff.

Let me know which My Dying Bride albums you come across. The one I got for Christmas A Line of Deathless Kings wasn't an easy one to get into. I wasn't sure which album of theirs I should have got first so I went with the one that had a song I was familiar with.

I will get The Angel And The Dark River, first. When I want to start listenning to a band with such a big discography, I usually start with the highly rated albums on Metal Archives or I go on last.fm and see what is the most popular track and from which album they are. This is a good method actually. As long as you do it for bands or artists who are not too popular. Otherwise you just end up listenning to the most commercial album or the one with most radio hits.

So yeah, following the path of the band's fans is a good place to start.

Last.fm is hit and miss for me but for Metal-Archives, it's not really a site we should rely on but to listen to first albums of a particular band, I've gone with what has the most reviews, unless the score is really bad.

I'm very happy today. I had a look at Shadow Kingdom Records just before out of boredom and found out they got Manilla Road's The Deluge reissue in stock earlier than expected. Had to take it while I had the chance and along with that, I saw Warning's Watching from a Distance. To those who kept bugging me to get this album (especially Nev who isn't around anymore), I hope you're happy now.

I miss Nev. Nev fucking loved this album, my experience with it was troubled. The first two tracks, I dig. Thats the title track and Footprints. Then I hit a wall with the album when Echoes (I think it's called that) comes on, and I can't even recall anymore tracks.

The problem with this album is it's simple. And it's spaced out. And it's a tad boring. And re-listening isn't the most fun because it's slow, and boring. And not the happiest album either. It almost brought me to tears last year when I dumped a girl and listened to it.

Yeah, well, I don't pick the album with the highest average score for the reviews if there is only one or two reviews. I usually pick the one with most reviews and highest average score. So if there are three albums with 10+ reviews each, I pick the one with the highest average, or I go read some of the reviews to see what people think about it.

Then again, that's just to get into the artist. If I like what I hear or if I think there might be more to another album, I pave my own way.

Today I really feel like listenning to my old Soilwork albums. No matter what you guys think about Gothenburg Metal... I think these albums had a great feel and ambience, along with some good riffs. Stabbing The Drama and Natural Born Chaos are my favorites.

Slow and not happy? Isn't that the point of doom metal?

I don't know if we consider them metal or not, do we decide that based on Metal Archives policy or do we have our own?

For the most part we will base whether a band is metal or not by what Metal-Archives has on their site. However, I won't rely on them 100% since you'll get bands like Trivium that shouldn't even be associated with metal to begin with.

Greatest news of the month, Slough Feg will be playing a few shows in the UK. They'll be in London on 4th August which was when I planned to attend the first day of the NG London meet but Slough Feg take priority. The NG guys still have me for the rest of the weekend so it's all good!
