Meh, he's ignoring the countless hip hop artists who are geniuses at writing and creating beats. Even sampling can be easily defended; taking someone's drumming (to be in consistency with the article, John Bonham's) and doing nothing to it is pretty lame and amounts to stealing someone else's work for your own gain. However, if one were to creatively and artistic edit the sample in question, then who's to say the DJ isn't talented? It's a different art form, which requires different artistic skills and abilities and creative visions. Artistry and creativity are relative to what genre/medium the artist in question is working with.

I'd rather listen to rap music with interesting samples and lyrics than Motorheads generally boring and repetitive music, though they do have some good material too. And why is he calling Justin Bieber "boring"? Because he's not gratuitously using drugs and alcohol? Lemmy sounds a bit ignorant here, I don't understand why people worship this guy so much.

Hip-hop may not be my cup and I may respect Lemmy a lot but I don't agree with him here. I respect the fact that hip-hop relies more on vocals and lyrics than the instruments but I mostly prefer music that relies more on instruments.

Hammer Smashed Face seems to be their most popular track. Better try listening to a few other songs of theirs before you even think of getting any of their albums. Just to be on the safe side.

You should get the Bleeding, I think it's their catchiest album and easiest to get into.

Seing how I hate both Groove and Industrial Metal, I think I might not be the best guy in here to help you out. I have listenned to one of their tracks and they seem to mix Groove, Industrial and Melodic Death Metal pretty well. This might not be my cup of tea. But it's the first time I listen to a Groove Metal band that doesn't make me want to eat my own ears.

I think there is some potential in Gallowbraid. Let's hope their first full-lenght will be good.

I tried Alestorm

I found them to be a bit cheesy for my taste

I wasn't sure what exactly 'Pirate Metal', as some people had chosen to call it, was defined and to me it sounded like a blending of power and folk without really bringing out the best in either subgenre.

Yeah, it's really an acquired taste. They're big in Scotland I believe. It's definitely got folk and power metal in it and I think it doesn't bring out the best in either side because, it's got it's own personality towards it. I for one just liked the keytar in the beginning, it was humorous.

To be honest most sub-genres of metal are a load of bollocks.

Pirate Metal is like Viking Metal and all those "non-existing" subgenres, that just happens to be Melodic Death/Power/Epic Folk Metal with specific lyrical themes and/or some melodies with a pirate-ish flavor... if that ever means anything :P

It's just stupid and useless. I have to admit that Finntroll made me laugh with their Troll Metal subgenre :P

But yeah, that kind of music is always somewhat cheesy... as it really doesn't feel like what we could call "real folk metal" or whatever... I'm talking about bands like Ulver with their album Bergtatt or Agalloch with Pale Folklore. Bands like Eluvetie, Equilibrium, Ensiferum or Alestorm are amongs these bands that some like to call "Epic Folk". While that doesn't make them automatically bad, these bands usually tend to play a more accessible and poppish genre of Metal. Some of these bands even take influences from the Melodic Death Metal scene.

All hail HeavenDuff? The Keeper Of Metal Knowledge? Haha
I agree, a lot of subgenres that are theme based are kind of retarded, I think I've only stuck with Viking Metal because of Amon Amarth. And I only listen to a few Alestorm songs.

I'm just saying you can't make up genres based on nothing else than the band's image or favorite lyrical themes. Especially when the music is nothing else than Folk Metal.

From now on, Empyrium will be Nature Metal, Blotted Science will be Brain Metal, Abigail Williams will be Satan Metal, Edguy will be Happy Metal and Evile will be Violence Metal. See?

I really like how Equilibrium and Ensiferum tackle the epic folk style. At least from those two I get more a sense of individuality and variance in their style. It feels more like they are building on other styles and blending them in ways that makes it more unique whereas Alestorm was more just a 'fitting together' of multiple genres. I haven't really listened to Eluvetie so I don't really have an opinion on them.

I also really like Equilibrium :) Their music was great, but they felt the need to change vocalist and their latest album just isn't any good...

I'm one that enjoys their music. I knew them before they were called Alestorm. I see them as a band having some laughs and not making music serious business for them.

Fun fact: There's a medieval metal subgenre floating around here.
